Chapter 2 - A Childhood in the Amazigh Atlas Mountains

Chapter 1: A Childhood in the Amazigh Atlas Mountains

Deep in the towering Atlas Mountains, where clouds embrace the high peaks and nature unfolds in its enchanting beauty, lies a small village called "Tizlit." This village is not merely a settlement, but a place alive with ancient traditions and a simple life inhabited by strong Amazigh spirits. In one corner of this village, Hamid was born—the fifth of nine siblings—into a hardworking family living on the edge of poverty, yet rich in its traditional Amazigh values and principles.

Hamid was a young child, gentle-faced, with eyes shining with innocence and curiosity. Every day, he followed his father to the pastures, where sheep and livestock grazed safely among the green grass. He used to carry his small bow with him, along with a set of wooden arrows he had crafted himself. He dreamed of becoming brave, like the heroes in the stories his grandparents told him in the evenings, as they sat around a small fire burning during the long winter nights, listening to the sound of raindrops falling on the worn roof of their home.

Each morning slipped quietly into the village, filled with the scattered sounds of chickens and sheep. Small farms were surrounded by ancient olive trees that seemed to tell stories of the past. Hamid and his siblings would wake the animals before sunrise and help their parents with farm work. The dawn cast its golden colors over the mountains, making everything look like a living painting drawn by nature itself.

The village was marked by strong bonds among family and neighbors. Houses, built of clay and stone, were connected by narrow alleys. Life was simple, yet everything was shared. During holidays and special occasions, everyone gathered together. When the season came, women would meet in the village square to make traditional bread—"baghrir"—whose delicious aroma filled the air with a sense of nostalgia and unity.

From a young age, Hamid learned the values of generosity and sharing. One day, while wandering in the mountains with his siblings, he found a small bird that had fallen from its nest. Instead of leaving it alone, he gently carried it home, and his siblings taught him how to care for such small creatures. Hamid felt immense joy when he saw it learn to fly a few days later. From that moment, he realized that every living being holds importance and value, no matter how small.

But life was not always easy. His family faced many hardships and challenges. At times, they suffered from a lack of food, especially during the cold winter months. Hamid had to learn how to contribute to meeting his family's needs. He began collecting firewood from the mountains to light fires and made sure to help with agricultural work. Walking through nature in the mountains filled his heart with peace and gave his mind clarity, helping him appreciate the value of every moment.

Education was not available to everyone in those days, but Hamid longed to learn. His mother would tell him stories of heroes and great figures from their ancestors, and every night he would ask for more. "How did they manage to face challenges?" he would ask curiously. His mother would reply with a warm smile, "Willpower and determination, Hamid, are what make a person strong." These words planted something deep in his heart.

Harvest season was a time of celebration in the village. Everyone gathered to collect crops and sing traditional songs. Colors brought life to everything, and laughter filled the air. Hamid tried to help as much as he could, always under the watchful eye of his mother, who supported and encouraged him.

Seven years passed, shaping Hamid's soul—surrounded by love and hardship, friendship and more. The stories he heard from his family became turning points in his life. His childhood friends would gather in the afternoons to enjoy the mountain landscape, racing each other carefully across the terrain. Those days were carefree, as he moved between the hills, playing and laughing.

As he grew up in this rich environment, his dreams began to take shape. He wanted to become something great, to pave a path for the people of his village. Perhaps one day, he would help educate other children, or plant a tree in the heart of the village to provide shade for all. His dreams carried the simplicity of rural life, yet held a deep passion within his heart.

This was the beginning of his life's journey, where each day swayed between playing as a young child and thinking as a mature, thoughtful being. During those seven years, in that corner of the Amazigh village, Hamid formed his personality and identity—as a child rich in his history, his family, and his dreams. Childhood in the Atlas Mountains embodied those authentic values that continue to live on in future generations.

Then came the moment to leave the village…

the phase of being a stranger in his own homeland.
