Chapter 3 - Between the Waves and the shore

Vee spent the rest of the day in a haze, her mind still tangled with the words she had shared with Rui. "I'm not going anywhere." The quiet confidence in his voice haunted her, the promise that he was willing to stay, no matter what. But was she ready for that? Could she handle being pulled into something so intense and unpredictable?

The sun was setting by the time Vee and Brie sat down on the patio of the beach house, overlooking the sparkling waves as they collided with the shore. Vee took a deep breath, letting the salty air fill her lungs, trying to clear her head.

Brie, however, wasn't letting up. She had been watching Vee carefully all day, sensing something was off. "I can tell you're thinking about something," she said softly, her gaze steady on her best friend. "Is it about Rui?"

Vee flinched, not expecting the question so directly. She shifted in her seat, staring at the waves for a moment before responding. "It's... complicated."

Brie raised an eyebrow. "Complicated? Or are you just scared?"

Vee didn't answer right away. She wanted to say she wasn't scared, but that wasn't true. She was terrified. Terrified of falling for someone who seemed impossible to understand. Rui was a puzzle, one that Vee didn't know if she was ready to solve.

"I don't know what I'm feeling," Vee finally admitted, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "Last night, when we talked... it felt real. But then, everything in my head tells me it's a bad idea."

Brie leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms as she regarded Vee. "Vee, you've always had this wall up. You never let anyone in, not like this. But maybe, just maybe, Rui's the one who's different. Maybe he's worth the risk."

Vee laughed softly, shaking her head. "You make it sound so easy. Like there's no cost to all of this."

"Is there?" Brie's voice was gentle, but firm. "Think about it. You're telling yourself there's a cost, but you don't even know what it is yet. Maybe you're just scared of letting someone in."

Vee couldn't help but feel a sting at that. Maybe Brie was right. But that didn't make it any easier to open her heart to Rui or anyone for that matter.

She was still processing everything she felt for him. The way he looked at her, as if she was the only thing that mattered in that moment. The way he'd stepped into her life like a force of nature, and yet, he seemed so different from the kind of guy she was used to. What if I wasn't enough? What if it all falls apart?

"I don't know what I want anymore," Vee confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I keep pushing him away, but he keeps coming back. And I,,,,,," She stopped herself, not wanting to say it out loud. She didn't want to admit how much she longed for him, how much she felt drawn to him.

Brie placed a hand gently on Vee's arm. "You don't have to have all the answers right now, Vee. You're here, you're safe, and you're allowed to feel whatever you're feeling."

Vee smiled, appreciating her friend's wisdom. "I'm just... scared of falling for someone who isn't what I imagined. And I can't shake the feeling that he has a lot of baggage."

Brie didn't say anything at first. She just let the silence hang in the air between them, the sound of the waves crashing in the distance. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer. "Maybe we all have baggage. Maybe what matters isn't the weight of it, but who's willing to help you carry it."

Vee felt her heart tighten at Brie's words. She hadn't expected this conversation to go so deep, but there was something about the way Brie spoke that made her question her own fears. Maybe she had been running from her feelings for far too long.

"I don't know if I can be that person for him," Vee said, almost to herself. "But I don't know if I can keep running either."

Before Brie could respond, the sound of a car pulling up outside broke the moment. Vee turned her head to see Rui stepping out of a sleek black car. He looked effortlessly put-together, his dark hair tousled in that way that made him look impossibly charming. He didn't notice Vee watching him, too lost in his own thoughts.

Brie stood up with a teasing grin. "Looks like he's here to make sure you're still alive after all that heavy thinking."

Vee rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress the flutter of nervous excitement in her stomach. "I'll be fine," she said, though her voice trembled slightly.

Rui's eyes met hers as he walked over, his presence commanding and steady. "Hey," he greeted, offering her a small, almost apologetic smile. "I thought we could go for a walk on the beach. Clear the air a bit."

Vee hesitated, glancing at Brie for a moment, as if seeking reassurance. Brie just smiled knowingly and gave her a gentle push toward the door.

"Go on. Talk it out," Brie said softly, her voice filled with warmth and encouragement. "I'll be here when you get back."

Vee nodded and stood up, her heart racing as she walked toward Rui. For a brief moment, her nerves threatened to overtake her, but then Rui reached out and gently took her hand.

As they walked toward the beach, Vee tried to steady her breath, wondering what this conversation would bring. Would it be the turning point she had been waiting for? Or would it just be another moment of hesitation?

Whatever it was, she knew one thing for certain, this was a moment she couldn't run from.
