Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: The Pale Flame Inheritance

The wrist mark ignited.

Not fire — not visible fire. An internal fire that traveled up the mark into his arm, through his shoulder, into his chest and dantian in one second.

The Core Formation man felt it. He let go.

His grip opened on its own, like something had told his body to release. He stepped back. His expression showed something that Wen Dao had not seen on the faces of powerful people before: uncertainty.

Wen Dao landed on his feet.

His body felt different. Not more powerful — his Qi Condensation Level One was unchanged. But his qi was moving differently. The thin thread of cultivation energy in his dantian had organized itself into a pattern. A flame pattern. Pale-colored. Steady.

He understood it without instruction. Like a memory he hadn't made yet.

The Pale Flame technique was not a combat power. Not at this level. What it had activated was a reading ability — the same reading ability his Iron Question Fist built physically, now extended into the qi sensing layer.

He could feel the man's qi structure. Not just his presence — his actual internal architecture. The meridians. The cultivation pathways. The flow pattern.

And he could see the weakness.

All cultivators had a natural flow direction in their qi. The Zhao man's flow was clockwise — aggressive, forward-pushing. Against a reverse-direction impact, the qi would momentarily stall.',

He formed qi in his right hand. Counter-clockwise. The technique shaped it correctly without him thinking about it.

He hit the man in the center of his chest with a flat-palm strike.

The qi connected.

The man's own qi stalled. For one full second, his internal energy seized.

In that second, he was just a physical body with no cultivation advantage.

Wen Dao hit him again. Twice. Three times. Pure Body Tempering Level Nine strength behind Iron Question Fist forms.

The man went to one knee.

He was not beaten. He would recover in seconds. But he had been made to kneel, and cultivators at Core Formation did not kneel easily.

Footsteps behind them. Elder Tang and Zhou Jin arrived simultaneously from different directions.

Elder Tang took one look at the kneeling Core Formation cultivator and raised his walking stick.

What came out of the end of the stick was not sound and was not light — it was a suppression wave that hit the kneeling man and pressed him flat.

The other two Zhao family intruders arrived from behind — they had broken through the sect defense and converged here.

They saw their colleague on the ground and Elder Tang standing over him.

A standoff.

The senior of the two intruders — an older woman with cold eyes — assessed the situation in two seconds.

'We have delivered our message,' she said, voice completely flat. 'The Zhao family will be in contact through formal channels.'

She helped the kneeling man up. The three of them left through the gate — not fleeing, withdrawing with dignity.

The sect's alarm continued for another few minutes and then fell silent.

Elder Huang appeared in the gate courtyard. He looked at the departed intruders' path. Then at Elder Tang. Then at Wen Dao.

He looked at the wrist mark.

The pale flame brand was glowing visibly now — a thin blue-white light under the skin, fading but real.

'That is Shao Wei's inheritance,' Huang said.

'Part of it,' Wen Dao said.',

Huang studied him for a long moment. His expression was absolutely unreadable.

'The Zhao family will file a formal complaint to the regional sect alliance,' Huang said finally. 'They will claim we are harboring stolen Pale Flame Sect property.' He looked at Tang. 'Can we counter that legally?'

'Shao Wei's gift to a third party is uncontestable under sect law if it was given willingly,' Tang said. 'He was not Iron Mountain property. His possessions were his to give.'

'They won't accept legal arguments,' Huang said.',

'No,' Tang said.

Another silence.

Elder Huang looked at Wen Dao again.

'You are now officially a full inner disciple,' Huang said. 'No conditions.' He walked away.

Wen Dao stood at the gate for a while after everyone else had moved.

He looked at his wrist. The mark was almost dark now. Used once. Elder Shao had said one use.

But the Pale Flame internal technique was real and active in his dantian. That wasn't a one-use thing.

That was permanent.

He had something new now. Something that would need to be understood fully before it could be weaponized.

He went back inside.
