Chapter 56 - CHAPTER 56 THE SEAL BREAKS

— ✦ —

Four days before his planned departure for the Academy, the ground shook.

Not an earthquake. A formation event — the distinct tremor of a sealed spatial construct destabilizing. Every cultivator in the compound felt it simultaneously.

Wen Dao was in the middle of cultivation when the tremor hit. He opened his eyes immediately.

His Pale Flame sense spiked. A qi pressure wave from directly below the east training hall. Dense. Ancient. Not Iron Mountain Sect's qi signature — older than the sect. Older than the mountain the sect was built on.

He was moving before the sect alarm activated.

He reached the east training hall as the floor cracked.

Not violently — a single clean line, three feet long, perfectly straight, running from the center of the floor to the east wall. The stone had split along a plane rather than fracturing irregularly. This was not structural damage. This was an opening mechanism.

From the crack: light. Blue-white. The same color as the Pale Flame's secondary glow.

Cai Rong arrived behind him. Then Zhou Jin. Then six other inner disciples.

Elder Tang came last, moving fast for a man with a walking stick.

He looked at the crack. His expression changed in a way Wen Dao had never seen before.

"I knew this was here," Tang said quietly. Not to the room — to himself.

"What is it?" Wen Dao asked.

Tang looked at him. "A sealed access point. It was placed here approximately six hundred years ago." He paused. "By the same practitioner who built the Shattered Heaven Realm."

Six hundred years. The same source as both his techniques.

The crack widened slightly. The blue-white light intensified.

Elder Huang pushed through the inner disciples crowding the doorway. He looked at the crack. He looked at Tang.

"Is this what I think it is?" Huang said.

"Yes," Tang said.

"Can we close it?"

A pause.

"It is responding to a specific qi signature in the room." Tang looked at Wen Dao. "It has been waiting for that signature."

Every head in the room turned.

Wen Dao looked at the crack in the floor.

The blue-white light pulsed once — and the pulse matched the Pale Flame's internal rhythm perfectly.

He took one step toward it.

The crack widened to three feet.

"It will fully open for you," Tang said. "Or close permanently if you step back."

Wen Dao looked at the light below.

"What is down there?"

"Unknown," Tang said. "The records indicate this access point exists. The records do not indicate what it contains."

He thought about it for exactly three seconds.

Then stepped onto the first of the rough stone steps that had appeared as the crack widened.

Behind him, Cai Rong said: "I hate this. I am absolutely coming with you." And followed.

Zhou Jin followed without comment.

The light pulled at his Pale Flame sense like a familiar voice.

Down they went.
