Chapter 60 - CHAPTER 60THE VOID TIGER ARRIVES— ✦ —

The outer wall fell at the ninety-minute mark.

Not catastrophically — the formation array collapsed under sustained Spirit Opening pressure, the blue shimmer disintegrating from the east section inward. The twelve Pale Remnant cultivators pushed through the breach with the speed of people who had been waiting.

The Iron Mountain defenders met them at the inner courtyard.

The difference in levels was real and immediate.

Wen Dao fought the first Pale Remnant Level Three who broke left — a hard exchange, two minutes, draining. He won it. Stepped over the downed cultivator and moved right toward the next threat.

Around him the courtyard was organized chaos. Fang Lie was handling two opponents simultaneously with precise efficiency. Shen Yu was faster than anyone on the field and hit with a precision that made up for her level gap. Cai Rong had abandoned his pleasant-non-threatening reputation entirely and was fighting with a ferocity that confirmed everything Wen Dao had suspected about his actual capability.

Elder Tang and Elder Huang were engaging the Level Four cultivators. Holding. Barely.

In the breach — the Spirit Opening cultivator.

He walked through the destroyed east wall section like the rubble wasn't there. Older man. Calm expression. The kind of calm that existed on the other side of mastery, where power had become so substantial that effort was no longer visible.

He stopped in the middle of the courtyard and looked around once.

His eyes found Wen Dao.

He walked toward him.

Tang intercepted. A full Core Formation qi blast — the kind that leveled buildings.

The Spirit Opening cultivator deflected it with one hand. The deflection wasn't even a technique. Just placement.

Tang's blast went sideways and hit the storage building wall. The stone cracked.

Tang moved again — faster, more complex. Huang came from the other side.

The Spirit Opening cultivator handled both of them simultaneously. Not destroying them — redirecting. Efficient. He was not here to fight the elders. He was here for the target.

He reached Wen Dao.

Wen Dao stood his ground.

He had been reading the man's qi structure for forty seconds as he approached. Spirit Opening qi was different from what he had encountered before — the Pale Flame sense was overwhelmed by the density and could only read the outermost layer.

The outermost layer was enough.

The man's qi carried the Pale Flame technique. Ancient version. Deeper than Iron Moth's. Deeper than Shao Wei's. The original.

He was the Pale Remnant's founder because he had been Shao Wei's master.

Not dead. Waiting.

"The combination is complete in you," the man said. His voice was as calm as his expression.

"Yes," Wen Dao said.

"Then you understand what that means for your safety."

"Yes."

"Give me the book." He extended his hand. "The letter. I know you found the chamber. I need the letter destroyed — there is specific information in it that must not be allowed to reach the entity's awareness."

Wen Dao looked at him.

"Is that the real reason?" he asked.

The man's eyes sharpened slightly.

"Yes."

"Then why send Iron Moth to kill me before you had the letter?"

A pause.

"Iron Moth acted without my instruction," the man said. His first genuine statement.

"And the twelve people who just destroyed our outer wall?"

"That was instruction." He met Wen Dao's eyes. "I am not asking you to surrender. I am asking you to give me a specific document. In exchange, we leave."

"And my cultivation?"

A very slight hesitation.

"Remains yours," the man said.

"That hesitation," Wen Dao said quietly, "suggests the answer is no."

He moved.

Not at the man — sideways, buying seconds.

And from the north wall, the compound's outer stones exploded inward as something hit them from outside at speed.

The Void Tiger came through the wall.

Four meters of pale fur and absolute qi density. Its yellow eyes swept the courtyard once.

Then it placed itself between Wen Dao and the Spirit Opening cultivator.

And sat down.

The courtyard went completely still.

The Spirit Opening cultivator looked at the Tiger.

For the first time, his calm cracked.

His eyes showed something Wen Dao had not expected to see on the face of a Spirit Opening cultivator.

Fear.
