Listening to the woman's echoing laughter filtering through the courtyard, Evelyn felt as though a physical blade were tearing through her heart. The pain was blinding. The women around him could be absolutely anyone now, anyone but her.
Evelyn had no memory of how she managed to get back to her five-star hotel. The moment she closed the door to the presidential suite, she threw herself face-down onto the massive bed, her tears falling uncontrollably into the fabric. The image of Michael holding Mary Donald played on a torturous, endless loop in her mind.
She cried until her pillow was entirely soaked through. Finally, wiping the tears from her swollen face, she dragged herself into the bathroom to take a shower before trying to force herself to sleep.
