Chapter 85 - Chapter 85: The Maestro of Oil and Iron

The air in the Archive didn't just get colder; it became heavy, pressing against Cinder's skin like the weight of an ocean. The "Lost Notes"—the escaping spirits of a thousand stolen voices—swirled around the mechanical Eye, drawn into its rotating lenses like moths to a funeral pyre.

Basalt let out a terrifying, guttural roar. The ram's hooves sparked against the brass floor as he dug in, his obsidian horns vibrating so violently they began to shed flakes of soot.

The Tuning Fork

The giant Eye didn't blink. Instead, the copper needles surrounding the dais began to rotate. They hummed at a frequency that bypassed Cinder's ears and resonated directly in his teeth.

"Rev, get off the dais!" Cinder shouted, lunging forward.

But Reverberal was paralyzed. The silver liquid in his eyes was being pulled upward, thin filaments of metallic light stretching toward the Eye. He wasn't just an "Echo" anymore; he was a lightning rod for the God-King's data-stream.

"DATA CORRECTION INITIATED," the Eye droned. "ELIMINATING STATIC."

A beam of pure, concentrated sound—a white-hot pillar of vibration—slammed down from the Eye toward the dais.

The Kinetic Counter

Cinder didn't have time for a plan. He threw himself into a slide, his violet-veined hands hitting the brass floor. He tapped into his Core Emergency Reserves, pushing his integrity down to a dangerous 28%.

He didn't fire a blast. He created a Resonance Bridge.

The Action: Cinder grabbed Reverberal's ankle just as the beam hit.

The Physics: By linking their systems, Cinder used his brother's frequency-shifting ability to disperse the energy through his own body and out into the "Magic Dirt" still clinging to his boots.

The floor beneath them buckled. The brass groaned as it absorbed the God-King's wrath, turning the metal white-hot. Cinder felt his vision pixelate, his internal HUD flickering with jagged red warnings.

Basalt's Gambit

The Sentinel Eye prepared for a second pulse, its lenses clicking as it recalibrated for Cinder's interference. But it had ignored the ram.

Basalt launched.

He didn't jump with muscles alone; he used the Kinetic Kick—releasing all the stored atmospheric pressure he'd gathered during the run through the foothills. He became a gray-and-obsidian blur, a living projectile cutting through the spectral mist of the Lost Notes.

CRASH.

The ram's horns slammed into the outer rim of the Eye. The glass didn't shatter—it was too thick—but the impact knocked the massive construct off its gimbal. The white beam intended for the brothers went wild, slicing through the rows of glass cylinders like a scythe through wheat.

Thousands more voices were unleashed. The room became a whirlwind of sound—sobs, cheers, death rattles, and lullabies—all clashing in a beautiful, horrific dissonance.

The Discordant Escape

"We have to go!" Cinder choked out, hauling a dazed Reverberal to his feet. "The whole mountain is going to shake itself apart!"

Reverberal looked at the shattered cylinders, the silver light in his eyes dimmed to a dull gray. "He... he was going to erase me. I was just a placeholder."

"Welcome to the rebellion," Cinder snapped, whistling for Basalt.

The ram skidded to their side, oil dripping from his horns where he'd struck the Eye. Behind them, the Sentinel was uprighting itself, its mechanical iris glowing with a vengeful, pulsing crimson. The brass staircase they had descended was now a twisted wreck, but the floor—shattered by the rogue beam—revealed a dark, plunging vent leading even deeper.

"Into the throat!" Cinder commanded, shoving Reverberal toward the dark opening. "If we can't go back, we go down!"

As they leaped into the abyss, the last thing Cinder saw was the Eye staring down at them, recording their descent into the heart of the God-King's machine.

Status Check:

Current Location: The Exhaust Flue (Descending to 'The Sump')

Core Integrity: 22% (CRITICAL - System Failure Imminent)

Party Status: * Cinder: Physical Trauma, Energy Depletion.

Reverberal: Shock, Frequency Mismatch.

Basalt: Horn damage (Structural), Morale: Unshakeable.

Item Lost: The Pine Whistle (Crushed in the scuffle).

Note: The voices of the 'Lost Notes' are still following them in the wind.
