Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: “The Line You Can’t Cross”

And somewhere between them—

A bond was forming.

One that could either save them…

Or destroy them both.

The rain didn't stop that night.

It poured endlessly, as if the sky itself was trying to wash away something that refused to disappear.

Han Soo-min didn't sleep.

Not even for a minute.

She sat on the edge of her bed, still in her damp uniform, staring blankly at the floor.

Her mind replayed everything again and again.

The attack.

The men.

The way they grabbed her.

And then—

Him.

Kang Jae-hyun…

"…Mafia."

The word slipped from her lips like a whisper she didn't want to hear.

But it was real.

Too real.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she hugged her knees.

"…Why me?"

She wasn't special.

She wasn't strong.

She wasn't anything.

So why…

Why was she standing in the middle of something so dangerous?

She closed her eyes tightly.

But all she could see was his face in the rain.

"Because you're already mine to protect."

Her heart pounded.

"…That's crazy."

And yet—

It didn't feel like a lie.

Morning came too quickly.

Seorin High looked the same as always.

Clean.

Elegant.

Perfect.

But today—

It felt suffocating.

The moment Soo-min stepped inside—

The whispers exploded.

"Did you hear what happened yesterday?"

"She got attacked!"

"Because of Jae-hyun!"

"Serves her right…"

Her steps slowed.

Her chest tightened.

They know…

But before she could process it—

"Soo-min!"

A voice called out.

She turned.

A girl ran toward her.

Short hair.

Nervous expression.

"…Y-are you okay?" the girl asked.

Soo-min blinked.

"…You are?"

"I'm Yuna… we're in the same class."

Soo-min froze.

Same class?

"…Oh."

Yuna smiled awkwardly.

"I know we've never talked but… I heard what happened."

Soo-min looked down.

"…I'm fine."

"You're not," Yuna said softly.

That simple sentence…

Made Soo-min's throat tighten.

"…I'll survive."

Yuna hesitated.

Then whispered—

"…Be careful."

Soo-min frowned.

"…Of what?"

Yuna glanced around nervously.

"…Of him."

Silence.

"…Kang Jae-hyun."

Before Soo-min could respond—

The hallway suddenly went quiet.

Like someone had pressed pause on the world.

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Confident.

She didn't need to turn around.

She already knew.

Kang Jae-hyun.

Students moved aside instantly.

Like he owned the air they breathed.

Soo-min's heart started beating faster.

He stopped in front of her.

"…You didn't come."

She blinked.

"…What?"

"You left."

His eyes were sharp.

Watching her carefully.

"…I went home."

"You walked away."

"…What was I supposed to do?" she snapped softly.

Silence.

Their eyes met.

Something heavy passed between them.

"I told you to stay," he said.

"I didn't agree."

A pause.

For the first time—

Someone spoke back to him like that.

The air turned tense.

Min-jun, who was watching from a distance, muttered—

"…This is new."

Jae-hyun stepped closer.

"You don't get it."

"Then make me understand," she replied.

Her voice trembled—

But she didn't back down.

That alone…

Was dangerous.

"…You're in danger," he said.

"I know."

"You almost got taken."

"I know."

"Then why are you acting like this?"

Her eyes shook.

"Because I didn't choose this!"

Silence.

That hit.

Hard.

"I didn't choose your world," she continued,

"I didn't choose your enemies…"

Her voice cracked.

"And I didn't choose you."

The hallway felt colder.

Jae-hyun didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But his eyes…

Darkened.

"…But you're here."

A pause.

"…With me."

Her breath caught.

"That's not my fault!"

"It doesn't matter."

His voice dropped.

"They won't care."

A long silence followed.

Soo-min's strength slowly faded.

"…Then what do you want from me?" she whispered.

Finally—

The question.

Jae-hyun looked at her.

Deeply.

"…Trust me."

Her eyes widened.

"…What?"

"Stay near me."

"…That's not trust. That's control."

Something flickered in his eyes.

"…Call it whatever you want."

Silence.

"…I call it survival."

Those words—

Hit differently this time.

Because now…

She understood what he meant.

Lunch break.

The cafeteria buzzed with tension.

Everyone was watching.

Waiting.

Soo-min sat alone this time.

Not with him.

For the first time since everything started—

She chose distance.

Her food remained untouched.

Her mind was too loud.

Trust him…?

How could she?

He was dangerous.

His world was dangerous.

And yet—

He saved her.

Protected her.

Stayed.

"…Why is this so complicated?" she whispered.

"Because you're thinking too much."

She froze.

That voice.

Jae-hyun sat across from her again.

Like yesterday never happened.

"…You didn't ask."

"I didn't need to."

Silence.

"…Why are you here?" she asked.

A small pause.

"…Because you are."

Her heart skipped.

"That's not an answer."

"It is for me."

She looked away.

"…You're impossible."

A faint smirk appeared.

"…I've heard that."

For a moment—

The tension softened.

Just a little.

Then—

Crash.

A tray fell to the floor.

Everyone turned.

Choi Ara.

Her eyes burned with anger.

"…This is disgusting."

She walked toward them slowly.

"You think this ends here?" she said, staring at Soo-min.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

"You're still trash," Ara continued.

Her voice was louder now.

"Doesn't matter who stands next to you."

Soo-min clenched her fists.

But before she could speak—

"Leave."

Jae-hyun's voice cut through the air.

Cold.

Final.

Ara laughed.

"You think I'm scared of you?"

Silence.

That was a mistake.

Jae-hyun slowly stood up.

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

"You should be."

His voice was quiet.

But terrifying.

Ara's smile faded slightly.

"…You wouldn't do anything here."

A pause.

"…Right?"

Jae-hyun stepped closer.

"Try me."

Silence exploded.

For a moment—

It felt like something terrible would happen.

Then—

Ara clicked her tongue.

"…This isn't over."

And walked away.

But this time—

She wasn't confident.

She was shaken.

After school—

Soo-min stood near the gate.

Waiting.

Thinking.

Her world had changed too fast.

Too much.

"…You're still here."

She turned.

Jae-hyun.

"…I was thinking."

"…Dangerous habit."

She frowned slightly.

"…About what you said."

Silence.

"…About trusting you."

His eyes softened—just a little.

"And?"

A long pause.

Then—

"…I don't trust you."

His expression didn't change.

"But…"

Her voice was quiet.

"…I don't want to run either."

That was new.

That was important.

"…So?"

She took a small breath.

"…I'll stay."

Silence.

"…But on my terms."

Jae-hyun raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…Explain."

"I won't blindly follow you."

"…Fine."

"You don't hide things from me."

A pause.

"…I'll try."

She narrowed her eyes.

"…Try?"

"…Some things are dangerous to know."

"…I'm already in danger."

Silence.

"…Fair point."

For the first time—

They stood on equal ground.

Not control.

Not fear.

Something else.

A fragile balance.

But somewhere far away—

A man smiled again.

"She didn't run."

Another voice replied—

"…Then break her."

The photo of Soo-min burned slowly in an ashtray.

"…Let's see how long she survives."

Back at the gate—

The sun began to set.

Golden light covered everything.

For a moment—

Things felt normal.

Peaceful.

But both of them knew—

That peace…

Wouldn't last.
