Chapter 21 - Chapter 20: The Silent Shadow of the Duke

The Great Hall of the Luxmore Manor was a masterpiece of architectural arrogance. Gold leaf clung to the vaulted ceilings, and statues of "Holy Knights" stood like silent, judgmental sentinels along the walls. Usually, this room smelled of expensive wine and aged parchment. Tonight, it smelled of ozone, burnt mana, and the metallic tang of fear.

Arain stood on the grand balcony, looking down at the chaos below. His small, pale hands gripped the cold marble railing. Beside him, Kael was struggling to breathe. The pressure in the air was thickening—a sign that a monstrous presence had entered the estate.

[Warning: High-Tier Mana Signature Detected.]

[Target: Duke Alaric Luxmore.]

[Rank: S-Rank (Grandmaster Swordsman).]

Arain didn't flinch. He watched as the massive oak doors at the far end of the hall were thrown open. A man walked in, his every step echoing like a death knell. He wore a cloak of midnight blue, and a longsword hung at his hip—a weapon that had tasted the blood of kings. This was Alaric Luxmore, the "Shield of the Empire" and Arain's biological father.

The Baroness, Elara, scrambled toward him, her silk dress torn and her hair a mess of tangled blonde strands. "Alaric! Finally! Look at what that... that monster did!" she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger up at Arain. "He killed the guards! He broke into the Forbidden Library! He's cursed, Alaric! We should have drowned him the day he was born!"

The Duke didn't look at his wife. He didn't even look at the unconscious knights being carried out. His gaze went straight up, locking onto Arain's violet eyes.

For a moment, the world seemed to freeze. Arain felt the Duke's mana—a crushing, suffocating weight that felt like a mountain falling on his chest. In his past life, Arain would have collapsed under this gaze. He would have begged for mercy.

But now? Arain leaned forward, a cold, mocking smile playing on his lips.

"Welcome home, Father," Arain's voice wasn't that of a six-year-old. It was the voice of a man who had seen the end of time and returned to tell the tale. "You're late for the festivities."

[System Pulse: Analysis Initiated.]

[Duke Alaric's current emotion: Confusion (40%), Intrigue (50%), Hidden Guilt (10%).]

Alaric Luxmore spoke, his voice deep and vibrating with authority. "Arain. You were supposed to be in the South Wing. You were supposed to be... powerless."

"Supposed to be," Arain repeated, his laugh a dry, raspy sound. "A lot of things were 'supposed' to be. You were supposed to be a father, yet you treated me like a stain on your polished boots. This house was supposed to be a sanctuary, yet it felt like a coffin."

The Duke's hand moved toward the hilt of his sword. The guards in the hall gasped. Was he really going to draw his blade against a child?

"The Forbidden Library," the Duke said, his eyes narrowing. "How did you survive the Ink-Wraith? Even a Master-Rank mage would struggle against its soul-drain."

Arain reached into his pocket and pulled out the Record of Souls. The moment the book appeared, the air in the hall turned freezing. Frost began to creep along the gold-leafed walls.

"The Ink-Wraith didn't want to fight me, Father," Arain lied with a straight face, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "It recognized its true master. It seems the Luxmore ancestors left behind more than just 'Holy Light'. They left behind the truth of their crimes."

The Duke's face turned pale. It was a subtle shift, but Arain saw it. The secret of the Luxmores—the pact with the Void—was something only the heads of the family knew. To see it in the hands of a 'cursed' child was his greatest nightmare.

[Hidden Quest: The Duke's Dilemma.]

[Objective: Force the Duke to acknowledge your power without entering a direct physical conflict.]

[Reward: 500 XP, 'Bloodline Suppression' Passive Skill.]

Arain knew he couldn't win a physical fight. Not yet. His body was too small, his mana pool too shallow. He had to play the game of psychological warfare—the game he had perfected in his previous life.

"Don't move, Alaric," Arain warned, his voice turning icy. "If you take one step closer, I'll open this book. And I don't think the 'Holy Shield' of the Empire wants the Emperor to know exactly where your family's 'divine' power comes from."

The Duke stopped. His hand stayed on his sword, but he didn't draw it. The Baroness looked between them, her confusion turning into sheer terror. "What are you talking about?! Kill him! He's bluffing!"

"Silence, Elara!" the Duke roared. The force of his voice sent a shockwave through the hall, shattering several wine glasses. He looked back at Arain. "What do you want, boy?"

Arain stepped onto the very edge of the balcony. He looked like he was about to fall, but his feet were held by invisible threads of shadow.

"I want what's mine," Arain said. "I want the North Estate. I want total autonomy. No guards, no 'tutors', no Baroness. From this moment on, the Luxmore name belongs to me. You will tell the world I am ill and need isolation. In exchange, I keep your secrets buried."

The Duke let out a cold, hollow laugh. "You think you can blackmail me? In my own home?"

"It's not blackmail, Father," Arain said, his violet eyes glowing with a terrifying intensity. "It's a mercy. Because if I have to take what I want by force... there won't be a Luxmore Manor left for you to return to."

[System Warning: Mana Overload! Body cannot sustain Void output much longer!]

Arain felt a sharp pain in his chest. His nose began to bleed, the dark red liquid staining his white shirt. He was pushing his six-year-old body to its absolute limit. But he couldn't show weakness. Not now.

"Choose," Arain whispered.

The Duke stared at him. He saw the blood. He saw the trembling hands. But more than that, he saw the soul of a conqueror. For the first time in his life, Duke Alaric Luxmore felt a shiver of genuine fear. Not fear of death, but fear of the future this child represented.

"Fine," the Duke finally said, his voice sounding older. "The North Estate is yours. But know this, Arain... once you step into that darkness, there is no coming back to the light."

Arain wiped the blood from his nose and turned away, his shadows swallowing him and Kael.

"I never liked the light anyway," Arain's voice echoed through the hall as he vanished. "It's too easy to see the lies."

[New Title Obtained: The Shadow Prince.]

As they reappeared in the quiet, derelict halls of the North Estate, Kael collapsed against a wall, his face white as a sheet. "We... we survived. You stood against the Duke and won."

Arain didn't answer. He slumped into a dusty chair, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Every muscle in his body felt like it was being poked by hot needles.

'That was too close,' Arain thought, his vision blurring. 'I need more power. The Duke is only the beginning. The 'Hero' is still out there, growing stronger every day.'

He looked at the Record of Souls. The eye on the cover opened and stared back at him.

[System Message: You have successfully secured a base of operations.]

[Next Phase: The Harvest of Souls.]

Arain closed his eyes. He had won the first battle, but the war for his soul had only just begun. Somewhere in the distance, the sun was beginning to rise, but for the Shadow Prince, the night was eternal.

Author's Note :

"The Confrontation of the Century! 🌑⚔️

Arain just went head-to-head with the strongest man in the Empire and walked away with his own territory. But at what cost? His body is breaking under the strain of the Void Mana, and the 'Record of Souls' is starting to demand a higher price.

This is just the beginning of the 'North Estate Arc'. No more guards, no more rules—only Arain and the shadows.
