Chapter 8 - Chains of the Past

The silver chains shot upward like lightning.

Zayden moved on instinct.

Too late.

One chain wrapped around his wrist.

Another snapped around his ankle.

A third coiled across his chest, pinning him back with brutal force.

Pain exploded through the mark on his hand.

Not ordinary pain.

This felt personal.

Like something was reaching inside him, tugging at the contract itself.

His breath hitched.

The cathedral floor trembled beneath him.

Lucien watched from the altar, calm and infuriatingly composed.

His gloved fingers rested lightly against the ancient book.

"You feel it, don't you?" he asked softly.

Zayden's jaw tightened.

The chain pulled harder.

A cold smile touched Lucien's lips.

"The first contract always recognizes its descendants."

Aria stepped forward, eyes blazing silver in the dim light.

"Let him go."

Lucien's gaze slid to her.

Slow.

Appreciative.

Dangerous.

"There you are."

A pause.

"That look suits you far better than silence ever did."

Aria's voice turned to ice.

"Lucien."

One word.

A warning.

He smiled.

"Still beautiful when you're angry."

Zayden's eyes darkened instantly.

Even pinned by the chains, the air around him shifted.

The mark flared.

Lucien glanced toward him and chuckled.

"Possessive."

A beat.

"How predictable."

The chains tightened again.

Zayden hissed through clenched teeth.

The pain sharpened into something vicious.

He could feel the darkness inside him stirring.

Hungry.

Violent.

Ready.

Aria took another step forward.

The symbols beneath her feet lit up.

Moon-pale light spread across the floor.

Lucien's smile faded.

"Don't."

Her gaze didn't waver.

"Then stop this."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"You know I can't."

Silence.

Then, softly:

"The Order already knows he's here."

That landed.

Aria's expression shifted.

Just slightly.

Enough for Zayden to notice.

Lucien saw it too.

Of course he did.

"They'll be here soon," he continued.

"And when they arrive…"

His eyes locked onto hers.

"They'll take him apart contract by contract."

The words cut through the hall.

Zayden's voice came out low.

"I'm still standing right here."

Lucien tilted his head.

"Barely."

The darkness inside Zayden snapped.

Enough.

The chains around his wrist began to smoke.

Black mist curled around the silver links.

Lucien's expression sharpened.

Interesting.

Zayden's breathing slowed.

His eyes darkened.

Cold.

Focused.

Dangerous.

The chain cracked.

Then shattered.

Lucien's gaze narrowed.

"Well."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"You adapt quickly."

Zayden ripped the second chain free with sheer force, silver links scattering across the floor.

The third snapped apart under a surge of crimson-black energy.

The cathedral lights flickered.

The mark on his hand burned like fire.

But this time—

he was in control.

Barely.

Lucien's smile widened.

"There he is."

Zayden took one slow step forward.

Then another.

Each step echoed through the cathedral like a promise.

"You talk too much."

Lucien laughed softly.

"And you rush too quickly."

He moved.

Fast.

Faster than the hunters.

One moment at the altar.

The next, directly in front of Zayden.

A silver blade flashed.

Zayden caught Lucien's wrist.

The impact rang through the hall.

For a second, neither moved.

Lucien's eyes met his.

Sharp.

Amused.

"You're stronger than I expected."

Zayden's grip tightened.

"And you're more annoying than I expected."

Lucien's smile sharpened.

Then he twisted.

The blade turned in his hand and slashed across Zayden's shoulder.

Pain flared.

Zayden didn't flinch.

Instead, he drove his fist into Lucien's ribs hard enough to send him skidding across the marble floor.

The altar candles toppled.

Flames licked across ancient stone.

Aria stepped between them.

"Enough!"

Her voice rang through the cathedral.

Not loud.

But absolute.

The very air seemed to freeze.

Lucien stilled.

Zayden's power flickered.

Even the fire bent lower.

Aria's eyes glowed brighter now.

Silver and moonlit.

The cathedral symbols began to react to her presence.

Ancient runes pulsed beneath her feet.

Lucien stared.

For the first time, real emotion flickered across his face.

Not amusement.

Not charm.

Something closer to ache.

"You're still tied to this place," he said quietly.

Aria's jaw tightened.

"I never was."

Lucien looked at her like she'd said something impossible.

A soft, bitter laugh escaped him.

"You were born here."

Silence.

Zayden turned sharply toward her.

Aria didn't look at him.

The tension in the room shifted.

This wasn't just about the contract anymore.

This was history.

Blood-deep.

Lucien's voice softened.

"They raised you here."

A beat.

"They made you what you are."

Aria's eyes turned colder.

"No."

She lifted her chin.

"They tried."

The cathedral trembled.

The original contract book glowed brighter.

Lucien's gaze moved from Aria to Zayden.

Then back.

"He doesn't know, does he?"

Aria's silence answered for her.

Lucien smiled.

Cruel.

Satisfied.

"Tell him."

The words dropped like stones.

"Tell him what you really are."

Zayden's gaze fixed on Aria.

Questions.

Suspicion.

Something more dangerous than either.

Aria's fingers curled at her side.

Lucien's smile widened.

"Go on."

A pause.

"Tell him why the contracts listen to you."

The book on the altar flared with silver light.

The cathedral doors slammed shut behind them.

A deep sound rolled through the hall.

Footsteps.

Many.

Coming from the corridors beyond.

The Order.

Aria's eyes snapped toward the sound.

Then back to Zayden.

Her voice came out quiet.

Urgent.

"We need to leave."

Zayden didn't move.

Not this time.

His eyes stayed on her.

"Not until you answer him."

Silence.

Footsteps growing louder.

Lucien watched like a man enjoying a slow disaster.

Aria took a breath.

Then finally met Zayden's gaze.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"…Because I was the first."

The footsteps stopped just beyond the cathedral doors.

Then came the sound of locks turning.

One by one.
