Chapter 19 - INTERFERENCE

The moment stretched.

Not time.

Something deeper.

Kai stood facing the entity.

His body burned where it had touched him.

Not with pain.

With presence.

Something had marked him.

"…Integration."

The word lingered in his mind.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

The entity's form flickered again.

Closer now.

More stable.

"COMPLIANCE INCREASE DETECTED."

Kai narrowed his eyes.

"…You're still trying?"

The air shifted.

"CORRECTION ADAPTING."

And then—

It happened.

The pressure changed.

Not from outside.

From within.

Kai's breath caught.

"…What—"

His vision split.

Again.

But this time—

Not two.

Three.

He staggered.

"…Ngh—!"

The ground beneath him blurred.

His own body—

Shifted.

"…Something's… wrong…"

The fragment's voice came in sharply.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Something's different."

Kai clenched his fists.

"…Different how?"

Silence.

Then—

"…They've introduced interference."

Kai's eyes snapped up.

The soldiers had stepped back.

But not in fear.

In synchronization.

They raised their hands again.

But this time—

Their energy didn't target him directly.

It spread.

Through the space.

Through the air.

Through him.

"…They're not attacking," Kai muttered.

"…They're disrupting."

The fragment confirmed it.

"…They're severing your alignment."

Kai's jaw tightened.

"…Alignment with what?"

A pause.

"…Yourself."

Kai froze.

"…What?"

His heartbeat echoed louder.

The entity moved again.

And this time—

It didn't press into him.

It spoke.

"YOU ARE NO LONGER CONSISTENT."

Kai's breath hitched.

"…Consistent…?"

"SUBJECT BEHAVIOR HAS SPLIT."

Kai's eyes widened slightly.

"…Split…?"

The fragment whispered.

"…They're talking about us."

Kai went still.

The entity continued.

"SEPARATION INCREASED."

Kai's hand twitched.

"…That's not good."

The fragment replied.

"…No."

A pause.

"…That's very bad."

Kai tried to move.

But—

His body lagged.

Like his actions were being filtered.

"…Tch—!"

He stepped forward—

And staggered.

His own movement felt… wrong.

Disjointed.

"…Why does it feel like—"

The fragment cut in.

"…Like you're being split into parts."

Kai exhaled sharply.

"…Yeah. That."

The soldiers advanced.

Not attacking.

Encircling.

Containing.

Again.

But differently now.

"…They're isolating the variables," Kai said.

The fragment responded.

"…They're trying to separate you from me."

Kai's eyes sharpened.

"…Then we don't let that happen."

He clenched his fist.

Focused.

Aligned.

For a moment—

His body steadied.

The flicker stopped.

"…There."

But then—

The System reacted.

"INTERFERENCE LIMIT REACHED."

Kai froze.

"…What does that mean?"

The fragment went quiet.

Then—

"…It means they've reached the threshold."

Kai's breath slowed.

"…And?"

A pause.

"…And now they escalate again."

The entity raised its hand.

Energy condensed.

Not around Kai.

But within the field itself.

Kai felt it.

A shift.

A deeper level activating.

"…This isn't good," he muttered.

The fragment answered.

"…No."

A beat.

"…This is where they decide what you are."

Kai looked up.

"…And if they decide wrong?"

The fragment's voice dropped.

"…Then they correct you."

The energy surged.

And for the first time—

Kai felt something he hadn't felt before.

Not resistance.

Not pressure.

Separation.

His vision split.

His body didn't feel like one anymore.

"…Ah…"

His knees trembled.

"…So that's what you're doing…"

The entity spoke.

"INTEGRATION WILL RESOLVE THIS."

Kai looked up.

Slow.

And smiled.

"…Yeah…"

His voice steadied.

"…Let's not do that."

And for a split second—

Everything stopped again.

But this time—

Kai wasn't standing alone.

Something inside him moved.

Independently.

And the battlefield—

shifted again.
