The rain had finally stopped when Lina returned to her small apartment.
The building was old, and the hallway lights flickered weakly as she climbed the stairs.
Normally, the place felt depressing, but tonight something inside her felt different.
Her mind kept replaying the moment from earlier.
Adrian Knight.
The billionaire CEO.
Offering her a job.
It still felt unbelievable.
Lina sat on the edge of her small bed and pulled the envelope out of her bag again.
She carefully unfolded the contract and read the words slowly.
Knight Enterprises
Position: Personal Assistant to the CEO
Her heart started beating faster again.
The salary listed was more money than she had earned in an entire year from part-time jobs.
"This has to be real," she whispered to herself.
But another question kept bothering her.
Why her?
Adrian Knight was one of the most powerful businessmen in the country. He could hire anyone he wanted.
Why would he choose someone like her?
Lina leaned back on her bed and stared at the ceiling.
Maybe it was just luck.
Or maybe…
There was something she didn't understand yet.
The next morning, Lina woke up earlier than usual.
She barely slept because of excitement and nervousness.
Today would be her first day working at Knight Enterprises.
She stood in front of the mirror and carefully fixed her hair. Her best clothes were simple but neat—a white blouse and a black skirt.
She took a deep breath.
"You can do this."
After grabbing her bag, Lina left the apartment and headed toward the bus stop.
But when she arrived outside the building, she froze.
A sleek black car was parked on the street.
The same car from yesterday.
The driver stepped out immediately when he saw her.
"Miss Lina Evans?"
"Yes…"
"Mr. Knight asked me to pick you up."
Lina blinked in surprise.
"He sent a car?"
"Yes, miss."
The driver opened the door politely.
Still slightly confused, Lina stepped inside.
The car interior looked luxurious and comfortable. The seats were soft leather, and the air smelled faintly of expensive perfume.
As the car moved through the city, Lina stared out the window.
Soon, the car stopped in front of a massive glass building.
She looked up in awe.
The building was enormous, towering high into the sky.
The words KNIGHT ENTERPRISES were displayed in shining silver letters above the entrance.
"This is really happening," Lina murmured.
Inside the building, everything looked elegant and modern. Employees walked quickly through the lobby, all dressed in professional suits.
Lina suddenly felt nervous again.
Everyone here looked confident and successful.
She felt like she didn't belong.
A receptionist approached her politely.
"Are you Miss Lina Evans?"
"Yes."
"Mr. Knight is expecting you."
Lina followed the receptionist toward the elevator.
Her heart pounded louder with each step.
When the elevator doors opened, they stepped into the top floor of the building.
"This way," the receptionist said.
Moments later, Lina stood in front of a large office door.
The receptionist knocked.
"Mr. Knight, Miss Evans is here."
A calm voice answered from inside.
"Send her in."
Lina took a deep breath and entered the office.
The room was huge, with glass walls overlooking the entire city skyline.
And standing near the window was Adrian Knight.
He turned slowly as she walked in.
Today he looked even more impressive than yesterday.
His dark suit fit him perfectly, and his expression was calm but powerful.
"You're early," he said.
Lina smiled nervously.
"I didn't want to be late."
Adrian walked toward his desk.
"That's a good habit."
He handed her a folder.
"These are your responsibilities."
Lina opened the folder and scanned the pages.
Her eyes widened.
There were meetings to organize, schedules to manage, documents to prepare…
"Don't worry," Adrian said calmly.
"You'll learn quickly."
Lina nodded.
"I'll do my best."
Adrian studied her for a moment.
"I expect nothing less."
Just then, the office door opened again.
A beautiful woman walked inside.
She was tall, elegant, and dressed in an expensive red dress.
Her sharp eyes immediately landed on Lina.
"Adrian," the woman said smoothly. "You didn't tell me you hired someone new."
Adrian's voice remained calm.
"This is Lina Evans. My new assistant."
The woman crossed her arms.
"I'm Vanessa Clarke."
Her smile looked polite, but something in her eyes felt cold.
Lina sensed the tension instantly.
Vanessa looked her up and down.
"Interesting choice," she said.
Adrian didn't respond.
Instead, he turned back to Lina.
"Your desk is outside my office."
Lina nodded quickly and left the room.
But as she walked away, she couldn't shake the strange feeling that Vanessa's eyes were still watching her.
And they were not friendly.
Cliffhanger:
Vanessa secretly sends someone a message: "Watch the new girl."
