The success of the Oakhaven printing presses and the new trade deals with the Northern Lords brought a surge of wealth to the valley. But wealth came with a heavy price. To build the steel for the trains, the paper for the books, and the glass for the hospitals, the factories had to run day and night.
Huge chimneys now stood at the edge of the city, belching thick, yellow smoke into the air. The clear blue sky of Oakhaven was turning a dull grey. The river, which used to be so clean you could see the fish at the bottom, was starting to smell of chemicals and oil.
"Arthur, look at the children," Elena said, pointing toward the schoolyard. "They are coughing. The air is heavy, and the soot is covering the white walls of the hospital. We are fixing the world's mind, but we are choking its lungs."
Alaric Vance stood on the balcony, looking at the "Industrial Monster" he had created. In the 21st century, this was called Pollution. In 1042, the people thought it was the "Smell of Progress," but Alaric knew better. If he didn't act now, Oakhaven would become a wasteland before the next generation could grow up.
"I've spent so much time building the 'Fire,' Elena," Alaric said. "Now I have to learn how to catch the Wind."
---
The factories ran on coal and wood. It was cheap, it was easy to find, and it produced a lot of heat. But it was dirty. Alaric knew that the "High Lords" who had joined the Trade Union were already building their own coal mines. They didn't care about the smoke, they only cared about the gold.
"The Duke of Iron-Hold has built ten new furnaces," Kaelen reported. "He says the smoke is a sign of his power. He laughs at our 'Clean Water' rules. He says the earth is big enough to swallow all the dirt we can make."
Alaric knew he couldn't just tell them to stop. He had to give them a Better Way. He had to prove that "Clean Energy" was more powerful and more efficient than "Dirty Fire."
---
Alaric moved his focus to the "High Ridge," where the wind from the Jade Sea blew steadily all year round. He didn't build the small wooden windmills the farmers used to grind grain. He built Wind Turbines.
Instead of heavy wood, he used Laminated Light-Wood coated in resin. They were shaped like airplane wings, the same "Aerodynamic" shape he used for his gliders, to catch even the lightest breeze.
Inside the tower, he installed a massive version of his copper-wire coils and magnets. As the wind spun the blades, it created Electricity without a single puff of smoke.
"It's silent, Harl," Alaric said, watching the first giant blade begin to turn. "No coal. No soot. Just the breath of the world turning into power."
---
But wind wasn't enough for the heavy steel factories. They needed intense heat. For this, Alaric looked at the sun. He remembered the stories of Archimedes using mirrors to burn ships. He decided to build a Solar Concentrator.
He polished hundreds of large, curved metal plates until they shone like silver. He arranged them in a giant circle on a hillside, all pointing toward a single iron tower in the center.
"When the sun hits these mirrors," Alaric explained to the skeptical engineers, "they reflect the light onto that one spot. The heat will be so intense it can melt salt. We can use that melted salt to boil water and run our steam engines even at night."
---
The Northern Lords didn't like the "Wind Towers." They owned the coal mines, and they wanted everyone to buy their coal. If Alaric made energy "Free" from the wind and sun, their coal would be worthless.
"They are sending 'Saboteurs', Arthur," Kaelen warned. "The Earl of North-Point has hired men to sneak into the High Ridge at night. They want to burn the wooden blades and smash the mirrors. They say Oakhaven is stealing the 'Sun's Honor'."
Alaric didn't wait for them to attack. He used his knowledge of Remote Sensing. He connected the telegraph wires to the wind towers. If someone touched the base of a turbine, a signal would travel back to the Oakhaven Guard.
"We won't just catch them," Alaric said. "We will show them that the 'Old World' cannot touch the 'New'."
---
A group of fifty mercenaries, hired by the Earl, crept up the High Ridge under the cover of a storm. They carried torches and axes, ready to destroy the "Magic Wheels."
Suddenly, the ridge was bathed in light. It wasn't the "Flash-Bombs" this time. It was the Electric Searchlights. Alaric had used his new wind power to fuel massive lamps with parabolic reflectors.
"Drop your axes!" Kaelen's voice boomed through a megaphone.
The mercenaries were terrified. They were standing in the middle of a storm, but it was as bright as noon. They looked up and saw the giant white blades of the turbines spinning above them like the wings of silent gods.
"The Earl told us these were toys!" one mercenary cried, dropping his torch. "He didn't say they could command the light!"
---
Alaric didn't punish the men. He sent them back to the Earl with a message. But he also sent something else, a Sample.
He sent a wagon to the Earl's castle. Inside was a single, glowing Light Bulb connected to a primitive battery. Along with it was a letter.
"To the Earl of North-Point, your coal makes the world dark. My wind makes the world bright. I am building a 'Power Line' from the High Ridge to the border of your lands. I will give your people light for half the price of your coal. You can keep your mines and watch them go silent, or you can invest in the 'Oakhaven Power Company' and help us build the wires. Choose the past and go broke, or choose the future and stay rich."
---
The Earl was furious, but when he saw the light bulb, his greed took over. He realized that if every house in his city had a "Glow-Jar," he could charge them for the "Magic Water" (electricity) that flowed through the wires.
He didn't have the knowledge to build it himself. He was completely dependent on Alaric's "Secrets." By accepting the electricity, the Earl was accidentally giving Alaric control over his kingdom's energy.
"He fell for it, Arthur," Elena laughed. "He thinks he's winning because he's making money. He doesn't realize he's just become a customer of Oakhaven."
---
With the wind and solar plants working, Alaric began to shut down the coal furnaces in Oakhaven. The air cleared. The soot washed off the hospital walls.
Alaric built a Biological Filter for the river. He used layers of sand, charcoal, and specific types of river plants that "ate" the factory waste. The fish returned to the Oakhaven waters.
He replaced the coal-burning "Thunder-Horse" with an Electric Tram that ran through the city streets, powered by the overhead wires from the High Ridge.
Life was quiet again, but it was a "Powerful" quiet. People could move across the city in minutes. They could read at night without the smell of oil lamps. The children stopped coughing.
---
Alaric knew the balance was still shifting. He had the "Ahead" advantage, and he used it to keep the peace. He built a series of Electric Turrets around the valley, not to kill, but to "Stun." If an army ever tried to invade Oakhaven again, they would find their horses stopped by invisible fences and their swords vibrating with "Static Shocks."
"We are building a paradise, Arthur," Kaelen said, looking out over the clean, glowing city. "But aren't you worried? What happens when you're gone? What happens when someone else learns how to make the 'Glow'?"
"That's why we have the schools, Kaelen," Alaric said. "I'm not just teaching them how to make the light. I'm teaching them that the light belongs to everyone. If everyone knows how it works, no one can use it to become a tyrant."
Alaric sat down at his desk. He looked at the map of the world. There were still many dark places left, but the "Copper Web" was growing. The Architect was no longer just a man from the future, he was the man who had brought the Sun and the Wind down to earth.
The "Dilemma" was finally fading. The world was learning to breathe again.
