Susan smoothed down her dress, taking a final look in the mirror. The short, sky-blue gown hugged her figure elegantly, giving her a polished look that she hadn't felt in a long time. Tonight, she'd left her hair loose, letting soft waves fall over her shoulders, and had put a little more effort into her makeup. She wanted to feel like herself again—something she hadn't been able to do since getting involved with Leo.
She shook her head, pushing those thoughts aside. Tonight was about Jeremy, the charming guy she'd met at the gym. He seemed nice, normal even, and she desperately needed that kind of stability in her life. As she got ready, she thought about how different Jeremy was from Leo. Where Leo was intense and unpredictable, Jeremy felt safe and grounded.
With a final glance in the mirror, she grabbed her purse and stepped out, trying to ignore the nervous flutter in her stomach. The drive to the restaurant was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension, but she told herself it would be nice to have a normal evening, away from the chaos of her life. Tonight, she was determined to focus on someone who didn't drag her into a world of trouble, someone safe—someone like Jeremy.
Since she'd given him her number, Jeremy had been nothing but sweet, sending her thoughtful texts and asking about her day. He was normal, respectful, and he made her laugh. As she continued to think about him, though, a shadow crossed her thoughts. Jeremy was a great guy, but he didn't stir her in the same way Leo did. That undeniable intensity she felt when she was around Leo was missing, but she brushed the thought aside. Maybe she just needed time. Maybe as she spent more time with him, things would be different.
The restaurant, Bistro Lumière, was an upscale spot with an understated elegance that made it popular among those who preferred sophistication over flash. Its façade was a combination of dark, polished wood and frosted glass windows that allowed only a hint of the warm, ambient lighting within to spill out. A small brass plaque by the door held the restaurant's name in a sleek, minimalist font, illuminated softly from above.
Inside, the space was equally refined, with low-hanging pendant lights casting a warm glow over the tables. Each table was covered in crisp, white linens, and elegantly set with polished silverware and fine crystal glasses. Deep blue velvet banquettes lined the walls, providing an intimate and comfortable seating option, while modern artwork adorned the walls in soft, muted colors that complemented the restaurant's dimly lit, inviting atmosphere. Small candles flickered on each table, adding a romantic ambiance that made every corner feel private and discreet.
The air was filled with a subtle blend of aromatic spices from the kitchen, hinting at the exquisite meals prepared just beyond sight. The quiet murmur of patrons and the gentle clinking of glasses and cutlery added to the ambiance, creating an environment that was intimate yet lively.
Susan spotted Jeremy waiting by a reserved table near the window, his dark shirt and tailored trousers showing off his athletic build. He looked up, and his face broke into a warm, genuine smile. As she approached, he stood and pulled out her chair. "You look amazing," he said, his gaze lingering on her for a moment. "I'm really glad you came tonight."
"Thanks, Jeremy," she replied, smiling as she took her seat. "It's nice to get out for a change and you look great too."
As they settled in, they ordered a bottle of red wine and reviewed the menu. Jeremy suggested the lamb shank and a salad with goat cheese and strawberries, while Susan opted for the salmon with roasted vegetables.
"So," he began, as their appetizers arrived, "I know we met at the gym, but I have to ask—what got you started?"
"Oh, I'm just trying to keep up with life," Susan laughed lightly, feeling herself start to unwind. "I actually haven't been going that long. I moved here recently, so I thought a change in scenery should include a change in habits, too."
Jeremy nodded, chuckling. "That makes sense. I've been going to the gym for years. Once you get the habit, it sticks. You're probably seeing that already."
She tilted her head, thinking. "Yeah, I guess. It's a good way to work off stress, anyway."
"Anything in particular stressing you out?" he asked, looking genuinely interested.
Susan paused. "Not really. Just...adjusting, I guess," she said, forcing a smile. She couldn't exactly tell him about the whirlwind that had been her life since Leo entered it.
"Well, you seem to be doing just fine," he said warmly. "Moving to a new place isn't easy, but it looks like you're settling in."
She gave a small nod, her gaze shifting to the flickering candle on the table. "Yeah. I'm just glad I'm starting to make some new connections. It helps."
"And I'm really glad to be one of those new connections. I was so happy when you agreed to go out with me," Jeremy said, smiling as he poured her another glass of wine. "When we first met, I wasn't sure if you'd be up for it, but I figured I'd try my luck."
She laughed, swirling her glass. "Honestly, I haven't been on a date in a while. I was a little nervous about it."
"Well, here's to new beginnings," Jeremy said, raising his glass.
They clinked glasses, and she found herself relaxing even more, allowing herself to laugh as they shared stories. Jeremy told her about his job in finance, his love for cooking—something he apparently wasn't very good at—and even his plans to run a marathon one day. He was easy to talk to, respectful and polite, and for a moment, she could almost forget the tension that had been weighing her down for weeks.
But as they finished their main course, Susan's phone buzzed on the table. She glanced down, her stomach clenching when she saw Leo's name on the screen. She read the text and her breath caught in her throat.
He wanted to meet her at his club. Now.
She swallowed, feeling torn. Jeremy was finally starting to feel like a welcome escape from her chaotic life, yet Leo seemed to pull her back in every time she tried to step away. She considered ignoring him, but she knew Leo enough to know that that wouldn't do her any good.
"Is everything okay?" Jeremy asked, noticing her hesitation.
She forced a smile, already feeling guilty. "Something…came up. I'm really sorry, but I have to go."
