The flight from Mexico City to Cusco takes three hours, which is not enough time to prepare your lungs for what awaits them. The Andes do not ease you in. At three thousand four hundred metres above sea level, the air has approximately seventy percent of the oxygen it contains at the coast, and it makes this fact known immediately upon arrival — not rudely, but with the firm, unapologetic clarity of a place that has always been this altitude and has no intention of adjusting itself for visitors.

Aayana stepped off the jetway and stopped.

"Oh," she said, with the expression of someone whose body has just received information that conflicts with prior expectations.

"Altitude," said Marcus, who had been to Cusco many times and was entirely comfortable, which was either an advantage of his constitution or an advantage of having grown up in a country where significant portions of the territory sit above two thousand metres.

"It feels like breathing through a cloth," said Aayana.

"It feels like normal breathing," said Marcus, "once your body adjusts."

"When does it adjust?"

"A day or two."

"A day or two," Aayana repeated, with the resigned acceptance of someone who has been through enough things that a day or two of respiratory inconvenience ranks as a minor inconvenience rather than a significant complaint.

Cusco itself was the particular kind of beautiful that happens when a civilisation builds something extraordinary and then several subsequent civilisations build on top of it without entirely covering it up, so the result is a city with Incan foundations under colonial Spanish architecture under modern signage, all three coexisting with the pragmatic tolerance of things that have simply been there long enough to stop arguing. The streets were cobbled with stones cut so precisely that they had remained interlocked for six hundred years without mortar, which is either a remarkable engineering achievement or evidence that the Incan stonemasons understood something about stone that subsequent generations have not fully recovered.

"Carmen is in the outlying district," said Marcus, navigating with the efficiency of someone who has been here before and knows which roads the cars can actually use. "She has been in Cusco for three years, maintaining the guardian network for the southern Americas."

"How many guardians are there in total?" said Elena, notebook already open.

"Twelve documented," said Marcus. "Perhaps more undocumented. The guardian traditions that survived colonial disruption went underground and some have not fully re-emerged." He paused. "One of the things the Dark Temple did very effectively during the colonial period was use the confusion to sever guardian families from their traditions. It is easier to corrupt an artefact's location if the people who know where it is have been scattered or killed."

"They planned for this over centuries," said Lin Xun.

"The darkness is patient," said Marcus. "You know this."

"Yes," said Lin Xun. "But it's still occasionally astonishing."

Part Two: The Guardian of Inti

The village was a small thing — a genuine small thing, the kind that exists at the end of a road that becomes increasingly unpaved and eventually admits it is actually a track, surrounded by the high Andean landscape that makes everything human seem both significant and proportionate simultaneously. The houses were low and solid, built against the cold of the altitude, and at the village's centre stood a temple that predated everything around it by at least eight centuries and wore this seniority without any particular display.

Inside, in the specific quality of light that enters temples through high, carefully angled apertures and arrives in a column rather than a flood, a young woman was kneeling before an altar with the concentrated attention of someone who is not performing prayer but actually engaged in it.

She heard them come in and finished what she was doing before turning. This was, Lin Xun noted, the action of someone with excellent priorities.

Carmen was perhaps twenty-five, with the high cheekbones and the specific quality of stillness that the oldest Andean portraits had been capturing for three thousand years. She wore a deep red textile wrap over modern clothing — the red of the Incan solar tradition, which was not decorative but communicative, the way a uniform communicates belonging and function simultaneously. Her eyes, when she looked at them, had the quality of high altitude itself: clear, clean, and covering considerable distance.

"Marcus," she said.

"Carmen." He gestured at the others. "Lin Xun, Aayana, Elena, Karim."

She looked at each of them with the same thorough attention that Marcus had applied at the Mexico City airport, and that Samuel had applied in Kenya, and that Hassan had applied in Cairo — the attention of people whose guardian sense reads the world in layers and takes a moment to read all of them.

"The four primary guardians," she said, and her voice carried the warmth of someone who has heard about people and is pleased to find the reality matches the account. "I have been hoping to meet you."

She raised her hand. The gold that came from it was a different gold from Karim's — not the deep, grave gold of Anubis's judgement but the high, clear gold of the noon sun at altitude, where the light is so direct and unfiltered it becomes almost a physical pressure. Within it, the outline of a puma — compact, assured, carrying the combination of speed and deliberation that makes the mountain lion the animal it is.

"Inti," she said. "The Sun God. The puma is his earthly form in the Incan tradition — the animal that hunts from high places, that sees the full landscape, that acts with precision rather than force."

"Beautiful," said Aayana, for the second time in two days in reference to another guardian's beast, with an appreciation so immediate and genuine that Carmen smiled — a quick, warm smile that transformed her composed face in exactly the way that Marcus's smile had transformed his.

"She is," said Carmen. "Shall we discuss the Solar Disc?"

Part Three: What Lies Beneath Machu Picchu

The underground room beneath the temple had the purposeful, information-dense quality that guardian preparation rooms always had — as though the people who built them had understood they were building for an unknown future reader and had tried to include everything that future reader might need.

The map on the wall was the most detailed representation of Machu Picchu that Lin Xun had ever seen, and he had studied the site's archaeology during the flight. This map went considerably further than any publicly available documentation — it showed the visible ruins on the surface, but beneath them, rendered in a different pigment, a system of chambers and passages that the existing archaeological record had either not found or, Lin Xun suspected, had found and not fully understood.

"The site was built on two levels," said Carmen. "The upper level — the one that tourists visit, that archaeologists have documented, that the photographs show — is the administration and residential complex of a high-altitude Incan estate. Remarkable, but explicable."

"And the lower level," said Elena.

"The lower level is why the upper level is where it is," said Carmen. "The Incan engineers did not choose this particular cliff face for its views, although the views are extraordinary. They chose it because something was already here." She pointed to the deepest part of the underground map, where a chamber was marked in red. "A pre-Incan sacred site. Something much older. The Incans built over it, incorporating it into their own tradition, because they understood that the power in the ground was real and needed to be respected and maintained."

"The Solar Disc is in the pre-Incan chamber," said Lin Xun.

"Yes." Carmen looked at Aayana. "And I want to explain something before we go there, because it matters." She paused. "The Disc is Inti's artefact. In the Incan tradition, Inti is the father of the Incan people — the sun who gives life, who makes the crops grow, who orders the seasons. In the Vedic tradition, your tradition —" she looked at Aayana — "Shiva is both destroyer and creator. Both cosmic forces operate through the medium of solar energy. Heat. Light. The sustaining power of the sun."

"Shiva and Inti are different expressions of the same cosmic principle," said Aayana.

"In the same way that Quetzalcóatl and the Naga are both serpent-wisdom traditions," said Marcus.

"And Anubis and the wolf traditions of other cultures are both guardian-of-passage traditions," said Karim.

Carmen looked at him. "Yes. Exactly." She seemed pleased — the pleasure of someone who has been carrying a complex idea alone for a long time and has just found an audience capable of completing it. "The artefacts are not specific to their traditions. They are expressions of universal principles, clothed in the imagery of the cultures that encountered them. Which is why a guardian from one tradition can sometimes access an artefact from another."

"Sometimes," said Lin Xun.

"The resonance has to be genuine," said Carmen. "You cannot force it. But if the principles align — if the guardian's nature genuinely corresponds to the artefact's principle — it recognises them." She looked at Aayana. "The Trishula is a solar-creative artefact. The Disc is a solar-creative artefact. You carry one. You may be able to use both."

Aayana was quiet for a moment, in the specific way of someone who has just been handed a responsibility and is deciding how to hold it.

"We'll see," she said.

"Yes," said Carmen. "We will."

Part Four: The Ruins at Dawn

Machu Picchu, at the hour before the tourist buses arrive, is what it was built to be: a place where the relationship between human construction and natural landscape is so precisely balanced that the stone terraces and the Andean sky seem to be completing each other rather than existing in opposition. The ruins stand at approximately two thousand four hundred metres, considerably lower than Cusco, and the air is proportionally kinder. Below the ridge on all sides, the valley drops away into a depth of green jungle that the Urubamba River cuts through in a broad, unhurried curve.

The morning light arrived over the eastern ridge and hit the stones in the way that the Incan architects had calculated it would hit them — specifically, precisely, the illumination of a civilisation that had measured the sun's movement with instruments of such accuracy that their calendar was correct to within minutes per year.

"Over here," said Carmen.

The northern section of the ruins contained, among other things, a group of large stones that the archaeological literature described as a residential complex. Carmen walked to a specific stone at the complex's edge — not the largest, not the most prominent, but the one with a particular inscription carved into its lower face, where the ground met the stone and where most visitors simply did not look.

Incan script. Angular, deliberate.

"The children of the sun may enter," Carmen translated. "The children of the sun know who they are."

She raised her hand. The gold of Inti blazed, warm and high-altitude direct. Beside her, without instruction, Aayana raised her hand and the Trishula's stored solar energy responded in the way that things respond when they recognise something that belongs to the same family — immediately, without hesitation, with the ease of a key finding a lock it was made for.

Two golds. Different qualities — Carmen's the clear gold of the noon sky, Aayana's the deep gold of the forge, of the creative destruction that makes new things — meeting and, in meeting, producing something greater than either alone.

The stone moved.

Not loudly. With the smooth, well-engineered precision of a mechanism that had been designed properly, maintained by the energy it contained rather than by any mechanical part, and worked exactly as intended after six hundred years of waiting.

"After you," said Carmen.

Part Five: The Chamber of the Disc

The passage went down for a considerable time — long enough for the temperature to drop from the cool Andean morning to something that suggested considerable depth, and for the quality of the stone around them to change from the precise Incan masonry of the upper level to something older and less architectural, more like the mountain's native rock shaped with great care over a very long period by people who worked slowly and intended the work to last.

The chamber at the bottom was circular. The Incan chambers they had seen were rectangular, their right angles the product of a geometrical philosophy that privileged the relationship between the human and the divine through the meeting of straight lines. This chamber had never been influenced by that philosophy. It was older than it, and it predated the geometrical approach, and its circular walls and domed ceiling produced an acoustic property — a resonance, a hum almost below the range of hearing — that made Lin Xun's guardian sense respond immediately.

"Very old," said the Azure Dragon. "Older than Inca. Older than the traditions we have been working within."

"What tradition is this?" said Lin Xun.

"An earlier one," said the Dragon. "Before the traditions became distinct. Before the guardians of different cultures lost contact with each other. This is from the time when the knowledge was shared."

At the chamber's centre, a stone plinth. On it, a disc of gold that was not the gold of metallurgy but the gold of the sun itself — not reflecting light but producing it, a warm, steady, entirely self-sufficient illumination that the disc had apparently been maintaining for an unspecified number of centuries and showed no signs of reconsidering.

Carmen stopped at the threshold and said something in Quechua, quietly, in the manner of someone acknowledging something that deserves acknowledgement.

Then she walked forward.

She never reached the plinth.

"Give us the Disc," said the voice from the shadows, which was not a new voice — which was, in fact, a voice they had heard before, in the pyramid chamber at Chichén Itzá, and in the street outside Marcus's house, and which apparently belonged to a Dark Temple operative of considerable persistence and determination.

The lead figure stepped from the shadow on the chamber's far side. He had two companions with him — four total, a number that had presumably been selected with care.

"You keep following us," said Marcus.

"You keep going where we need to go," said the figure. "It is an efficient use of resources." He raised his hand, and the dark energy gathered around him with the practised density of someone who has been doing this for a long time. "The Disc. Now."

"I want to note," said Aayana, to Carmen, "that we have six guardian beasts and they have none, which is a situation I find encouraging."

"Six?" said Carmen.

"Inti makes six," said Aayana.

Carmen looked at her for a moment, and the thing that passed between them was the recognition of two guardians from solar traditions who have just realised they have been thinking the same thing at the same time.

"Six," said Carmen.

"Dragon — Lightning Breath!"

"Naga — Water Cyclone!"

"Pegasus — Light Blade!"

"Anubis — Shadow Fang!"

"Quetzalcóatl — Storm Strike!"

"Inti — Solar Burst!"

The chamber held six guardian beasts simultaneously, which it managed by being the kind of ancient space that was built for exactly this level of event, and which responded to the combined illumination of six living mythologies by resonating at its own frequency — the deep, circular hum intensifying until it was not a sound but a feeling, a vibration in the stone and the air and the chest.

Four Dark Temple operatives, in a circular chamber with no exits except the one they had come in through, confronted with six beasts attacking from six different angles, made the rapid and entirely sensible decision that they had gathered sufficient information about what the Disc's location was and could pursue the matter from a safer distance.

They went. The lead figure's expression, as he went, was the expression of someone who has done a cost-benefit analysis and found it unambiguous, and who has accordingly filed away several items of tactical intelligence for future use.

The chamber was quiet.

On the plinth, the Solar Disc pulsed once — warm, present, the gold of it deepening slightly in the aftermath of the guardian energy that had just moved through the space.

Carmen lifted it.

Lin Xun looked at the Disc in Carmen's hands and felt the Azure Dragon stir in his chest with the recognition of something from the same original family — the same impulse that had made him feel, in the first chapter of the world's most improbable story, that the East Stone was his. The Disc was Carmen's. But it knew what it was in the same way they all knew what they were.

Part Six: The Recognition

They came out of the mountain into an afternoon that had moved the sun to the western ridge and was beginning to turn the stones the deep amber that made Machu Picchu what every photograph had been trying and somewhat failing to capture.

Carmen held the Disc and looked at Aayana.

"Try," she said, simply.

Aayana looked at the Disc. She had the quality — which Lin Xun had noted since the very beginning and which had never changed — of someone who approaches every new thing with a complete openness, without the defensive guarding that other people use to manage the risk of disappointment. She simply looked at it, and reached for it, and touched it.

The warmth that came through her hand was the warmth of the sun itself — not the metaphorical warmth of a tradition speaking about solar power, but the literal, physical warmth of a star whose light had been travelling for eight minutes to reach this mountain top. The Naga blazed gold. Aayana's breath caught.

"Oh," she said.

"Yes," said Carmen.

The Disc in Aayana's hand produced a light that was slightly different from the light it produced for Carmen — the same source, differently expressed, the way sunlight through water and sunlight through glass are both sunlight but become different colours. In Aayana's hands it was the gold of creative destruction and renewal, the Trishula's principle applied to the solar tradition, two ancient expressions of the same truth recognising each other and becoming, briefly, more completely themselves for the recognition.

"It chose you too," said Carmen. "As I expected." She took the Disc back gently, and Aayana released it with the slight reluctance of someone setting down something warm. "This is significant, Aayana. You are a guardian who can work across traditions. The Trishula and the Disc speak to you because you are not only the guardian of Shiva's principle — you are the guardian of the solar creative principle, wherever it appears."

"That's a large responsibility," said Aayana.

"It is," said Carmen, with the specific warmth of someone who has been carrying a large responsibility for some years and has found it suits her. "Welcome to it."

Part Seven: Rest, and Peru

The practical question of where six guardians sleep was resolved by Carmen's village, which had a guesthouse of the solid, altitude-adapted variety and a cook who operated on the principle that people at three thousand four hundred metres need more food than they think they do and should be provided with it regardless of their stated preferences.

"Three days," said Marcus, at dinner, in the manner of someone issuing a logistical statement that is not open to significant negotiation. "Before the next move. The Xuanyuan Sword requires preparation that cannot be done while tired."

"We are not tired," said Elena.

"You are tired," said Marcus. "You are functional when tired because you are all capable people, but you are tired." He looked around the table. "Three days. Carmen has offered to show you the sites. You should see them."

Lin Xun looked at Karim. Karim looked at Aayana. Aayana looked at Elena. The look completed its circuit and returned to Lin Xun, carrying the collective verdict.

"Three days," said Lin Xun.

The three days were, in the way that rest unexpectedly is, exactly what they needed — not merely because bodies and guardian beasts require recovery time, but because Machu Picchu and the surrounding Incan landscape turned out to be the specific kind of place that replenishes something that constant motion depletes. Carmen knew every corner of it and showed them with the exact, generous specificity of someone sharing something they love rather than performing a tour.

The Temple of the Sun, where the Incan astronomers had built a curved wall so precisely aligned that on the winter solstice the rising sun strikes a specific stone through a specific window at a specific angle, illuminating the altar with the accuracy of a prediction made three hundred years in advance. The Intihuatana — the Hitching Post of the Sun, the carved stone pillar used to track the sun's position through the year, which Carmen explained was not a metaphor but a functional instrument, the sun being understood as a force that needed to be in relationship with the earth rather than simply above it.

"They understood something," said Aayana, sitting on the grass of the upper terrace on the second afternoon, watching the sun track toward the western ridge. "About the sun and the earth. Not just astronomically. About what it means."

"Every solar tradition does," said Carmen. "Inti, Shiva, Apollo, Ra — different names, same understanding. The sun gives life. The sun can also destroy. The same force that makes things grow can burn them. The guardian of solar tradition has always been the person who understands how to hold both those things."

"Balance," said Aayana.

"Yes. But active balance — not the balance of things sitting still, but the balance of things in motion, each one kept in check by the other." Carmen looked at the sun. "That is what the Disc represents. Not just power. The wisdom of how to hold power."

Aayana was quiet for a moment.

"Wang said something like that," she said. "About Shiva's Trishula."

"Yes," said Carmen. "They were likely taught by the same source, somewhere in the long lineage." She paused. "The guardians, at the beginning, were all students of the same tradition. The divergence into separate cultural expressions happened over millennia. But the root was shared."

"Which means —" Aayana began.

"Which means we were never truly separate," said Carmen. "The Dark Temple wants us to think we are. Isolated traditions with no connection, no common language, no way to combine our knowledge. But we have always been connected. We are just remembering it."

Part Eight: The Roof of the Ruins

On the third night, Carmen led them to the highest accessible point of the ruins — a flat terrace near the Temple of the Condor where the view opened in all directions. Below them, in the valley, the Urubamba River was a silver line in the darkness. Above them, the Milky Way was visible in the way it is only visible at altitude, where the atmosphere is thin and the light pollution is absent — not a smudge but a structure, a genuine architectural feature of the sky.

"In Incan cosmology," said Carmen, sitting with her legs drawn up, the Disc warm in its case beside her, "the dark patches of the Milky Way are as significant as the bright parts. The dark cloud constellations. The llama, the fox, the snake — drawn in the absence of light rather than in the presence of it."

"The darkness has meaning," said Elena.

"The darkness is part of the picture," said Carmen. "Not opposed to the light. Completing it."

Lin Xun looked at the sky and thought about this, and felt the Azure Dragon thinking alongside him — the patient, thousand-year-old thinking of something that had watched a great many humans come to terms with the relationship between light and dark and found each person's route to understanding it to be entirely their own.

"In wanting what I'm thinking about?" said the Dragon.

"What are you thinking about?"

"The same thing you are. Whether the work ends."

"Carmen said the darkness is part of the picture."

"Yes," said the Dragon. "Which is a different framing from 'the darkness will be defeated.' More accurate, I think. And less exhausting, once you accept it."

"Less exhausting because you stop waiting for it to be over," said Lin Xun.

"Yes. The work is not a problem to be solved. It is a relationship to be maintained."

"Wang understood that," said Lin Xun.

"Wang," said the Dragon, with the warmth of something that has known a great many people and reserves its warmth for the ones who earned it, "understood most things. He just never quite learned to say them simply."

Lin Xun smiled.

Around him, the others were talking in the comfortable, unhurried way of people who have earned their rest and are spending it well. Marcus was explaining something to Karim about the relationship between Aztec astronomical traditions and the Maya calendar, and Karim was asking precise questions that were clearly delighting Marcus. Elena had Carmen's attention with a set of questions about the dark cloud constellations that had already filled two pages of her notebook. Aayana was lying on her back looking directly up at the Milky Way with the expression of someone who is not thinking anything specific but is receiving everything.

Six guardians. Four traditions becoming six, six becoming — what? A network. An understanding. The re-membering, Carmen had said, of what had always been connected.

"A toast," said Aayana, sitting up suddenly, with the specific inspiration of someone who has been quietly lying on their back working up to something.

"We don't have anything to toast with," said Lin Xun.

"Irrelevant," said Aayana, with the decisive authority of someone who considers this a procedural obstacle rather than a substantive objection. She raised her hand, in which nothing was held but which she held anyway with complete conviction. "For the guardians who came before us. For the work they did and the cost they paid."

"For Wang," said Lin Xun.

"For Wang," the others said, in the layered chorus of people from six different places using two words that needed no translation.

"For the work," said Marcus.

"For the connection," said Carmen.

"For what we're protecting," said Aayana. "All of it. All the people who don't know we exist and are alive because we do."

The stars held their positions. The dark patches of the Milky Way were as present as the bright ones, completing the picture in the way that Carmen had described, the whole thing continuous and vast and unconcerned with any individual perspective while simultaneously being visible to all of them at once.

Lin Xun looked at the five people around him — from four continents, from six traditions, from the same ancient root that had sent its branches in all directions and was now, slowly and improbably, beginning to remember that branches from the same root have a great deal to say to each other.

"China next," he said.

"China next," said Marcus.

"And the Xuanyuan Sword," said Lin Xun. "And the Dragon's evolution."

The Azure Dragon, in the warmth behind his breastbone, moved with the quiet, certain anticipation of something that has been waiting for a long time for the next step and can finally see it from here.

Five lines. Five lights. The same stars that the Incan astronomers charted, the same stars that the Maya built their pyramids toward, the same stars that every guardian tradition on every continent had looked up at and found, in the constellations they drew, the same stories with different names.

The darkness in the sky was part of the picture.

So was the light.

Together, they made something worth protecting.
