Chapter 14 - Controlled Growth

After Ethan came home from the Dungeon, he stood in the back garden, the night air cool and still. The city beyond remained active, distant sounds, controlled movement, occasional patrol lights cutting through the dark, but none of it reached here.

This space was isolated.

Contained. Reliable.

He raised his hand slightly.

"…Again."

The world shifted.

Not completely. Not unnaturally.

Just enough.

"Temporal Fracture."

Everything slowed.

The movement of leaves.

The subtle sway of branches.

Even the faint sound of wind

Dragged. Stretched.

Ethan stepped forward.

One step. Then another.

Precise. Measured.

Then

"Spatial Shift."

His body vanished.

And reappeared three meters ahead.

No delay. No instability. He stopped.

Observed.

"…Better."

The transition between space and time

Was smoother now.

Not perfect. But connected.

Before, they were separate.

Now

They overlapped.

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

Replaying the sequence.

Timing. Energy usage.

Perception shift.

"…The delay is still there."

Not in activation.

But in transition. A fraction of a second.

Unnoticeable to most.

But not to him.

"…That's where it breaks."

He exhaled slowly.

Then adjusted.

Again.

Temporal Fracture was activated first.

Then

A half-second delay.

Then Spatial Shift.

He moved.

This time

Cleaner. More aligned.

"…Closer."

The key wasn't speed.

It was synchronization.

Inside the house, movement stirred.

Krishara stepped outside, watching him quietly.

"…You're doing it again."

Ethan didn't turn.

"Yes."

Nethan followed behind her, eyes wide.

"Appachchi… you disappeared again."

Ethan glanced at him briefly.

"…Not disappeared."

"Avoided."

Nethan frowned slightly.

"…That's the same thing."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

Then

"When something disappears, it's gone."

"When something avoids…"

His gaze shifted slightly.

"…it chooses not to be seen."

Krishara watched him carefully.

"…And which one are you?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Then

"…The second."

Silence settled briefly.

He stepped back.

"Both of you."

They looked at him.

"We start properly now."

The tone changed.

Not casual. Not relaxed. Focused.

Krishara straightened slightly.

Nethan nodded instinctively.

"…We're ready," she said.

Ethan studied them.

Not emotionally. Not softly. Strategically.

"…Then we don't waste time."

He marked them.

"Domain Mark."

The activation was silent.

Invisible. But absolute.

Krishara blinked slightly.

"…That feeling…"

Nethan looked around.

"…Something changed."

Ethan nodded.

"I can track you now."

"Anywhere."

"No interference."

Krishara frowned slightly.

"…That sounds dangerous."

"It is."

He didn't soften it.

Didn't hide it.

"But it keeps you alive."

That was enough. Training began.

Krishara first.

"Don't react."

Ethan stepped forward suddenly.

Fast. Too fast. She flinched.

"…Again."

He repeated it.

This time slower.

"Watch first."

"Then move."

She adjusted.

Barely. But enough.

"…Better."

Her healing aura activated faintly.

Passive. Stable.

"…Keep it active at all times," Ethan said.

"Don't wait to be hurt."

She nodded. Understanding.

Then

Nethan.

"Guard."

The boy stepped forward.

Small. But steady.

Ethan attacked.

Not fully. Just enough.

The impact landed.

Nethan held. Barely.

"…Again."

Each time

Stronger. More stable.

More controlled. Ethan observed.

Every movement. Every reaction.

"…Good."

They weren't strong.

Not yet.

But they were improving.

Faster than normal.

Because they weren't reacting.

They were learning.

Time passed. Hours.

The night deepened.

Ethan stopped.

Looked at both of them.

"…That's enough."

Krishara exhaled.

Nethan dropped slightly to the ground.

Tired. But smiling.

"…We're getting stronger, right?" he asked.

Ethan looked at him.

"…Yes."

Then

A pause.

"…But not fast enough."

The words weren't harsh.

Just real.

Krishara looked at him.

"…You're pushing us."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Ethan's gaze shifted slightly.

Not to them. But beyond.

"…Because others are moving too."

A faint memory surfaced.

A presence. Watching. Waiting.

"…And not all of them are behind us."

Krishara understood immediately.

"…That man."

Ethan didn't deny it.

"…He's not the only one."

Silence followed.

He let that settle.

Then

He turned away.

"…We don't match them."

"…We surpass them."

Not through power. Not through numbers.

Through control.

Ethan stepped forward again.

Raised his hand.

Temporal Fracture.

This time

He didn't move.

He observed. The world slowed.

Stretched. Revealed.

"…Time isn't something I stop."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…It's something I step between."

The realization deepened.

Clearer than before.

And that

Was the difference.

The system gave abilities.

But understanding

Created control.

Ethan released the skill.

The world snapped back.

His gaze remained steady.

"…Next step."

Not said out loud. But defined.

Not stronger. Better.

And somewhere in the city

A man stood still.

Eyes closed.

"…That feeling again."

Not power. Not presence. Deviation.

"…You're growing."

His eyes opened slowly.

"…Good."

Because that meant

The distance between them

Was closing.

And when it did

One of them

Would have to decide.
