Chapter 48 - About Your Report...

"… Knight!" The Knight then finally turned and answered, "Yes Seneschal!"

"Good! You know who I am. I see you are curious about our Marshal, she can come off a bit tired and lazy, but don't let that fool you, she is one of our bests." 'I believe it.' Then Devan continued to introduce everyone, when he got to Avarice, he said Kiyun, meaning they did not even know its actual name, Avarice.

Maybe it was the Knight only, for having told Vice its real title, because after the Seneschal introduced the Knight Avarice finally got intrigued, looking up and just staring. She had not quite figured it out, this was just the usual reaction got when hearing someone naming themselves 'vile,' even though the Knight had not named itself.

"As you can see, we are not all here. Some of the Knight Bannerets are on duty, the other Marshal is also on duty, the Grand Master is preoccupied in the house of Mother."

'House of mother? Oh, the patron of humanity family, holding the stories about the world, on that floating island above, the Laurels, I should pay them a visit.'

Devan then started the meeting, "Most might be back during the knight tournament, used for increasing the ranks of the knights all at once, this is where you will also rank from a knight Commander to a knight Bachelor. Some of the squires will also be becoming knights, so even the Grand Master will attend.

This is not why this meeting was issued though; the point was to learn of what happened in Maroon city a couple of years ago from you, the Knight. Do you mind enlightening for us, we have read the reports, so just give us your first-hand account, we have some questions."

The Knight had heard him, but it still had a question for the whisper of darkness. 'Whisper, I know there is a type of power existing as just the lack of light, the shadows, is it possible that the halo of darkness around Avarice could be mistaken for shadows?'

Use ten slaughter points to receive information?... Slaughter points consumed. The shadows are nothing like the void, it is only the mere lack of light. It does not remove senses or have any particular power. Even concealment cannot conceal the void. They can see it. They must be confusing it with the darkness used in sorcery, magic, and some types of power, known as elemental darkness. Although similar in look, it is not the void but telling them apart can be near impossible for most human tools. This explains why they seem fine. Concealment cannot conceal the void, but it can make it get confused for elemental darkness. This darkness is not powerful, just a conduit to use certain types of powers, it is mostly associated with demons. She might be masking as a demon-human half breed. Using her ploy could potentially help you get out of looking suspicious in the future.

*For imaginary purposes, darkness is very dark inky purple, whereas the void is pitch black. *

The Knight knew it had taken the whole of its void with it, which might make some questions deadly. There might be a truth tool similar to the eye of truth from the guild in the void, meaning the real purpose of this, was probably to confirm the things in the report, too bad for them, the knight had told the truth only omitting details that would seem strange to even add. All it just wanted to know, was whether the void lord had figured the Knight out.

"There was a divine spirit summoned by a level 200 devil. It had been reported as level 199 before the mission, but once me and my squadron had arrived it had evolved into a level 200. The formation the knights took was to follow assault formation category three and defence formation category one.

This was because we knew that beforehand it was a summoner. The adventurers did not have anyone on hand to handle the spirit, and the situation was urgent, so the knights took the quest. The surprise attack to the summoner failed as predicted. The divine spirit had not even been fully identified…"

Jarnus asked, "How did you know it was a divine spirit, have you seen or known about them? They are not exactly known much."

"The spirit was an angel which is how I knew it was divine; it had also not been infected by madness. I was going to fight it while my squadron held the devil back for me. The battle took a turn, the void swirled, covering me and the spirit, the fight raged on, until the spirit was defeated, then the void vanished and I fell into slumber for a month."

Everyone had read all this, but hearing about someone encountering an angel was strange, they were not supposed to fight mortals, thus their scale of power had only been seen by few and had never been recorded in a comprehensive report. Rode shifted and asked, "how did you defeat it?"

"I have a power that gave me a huge advantage against it."

The good thing was that, diverging skills and powers was usually not a good idea, so they did not push for more details. Then Vice asked, "Did you encounter the destroyer moving the void?"

"No, it had not interfered." – 'because it did not exist.'

"What about the tremors?"

"Those were me and the spirit clashing, I have a skill that allows me to touch spirits."

The back and forth continued, until someone asked a question the Knight had not been expecting, from the paladin, Solace, in a voice devoid of personality. "How did you defeat the spirit and give yourself enough time to kill the devil? Since you were unable to kill it with a single blow, it should have been summoned back, or did you defeat it multiple times?"

"The thing is that I killed the devil with a single blow. This blow was way more powerful, I had not fully exerted my strength during the first hit, I did not account for the summoning skill restoring it."

"I thought it had been restored back to its health after summoning, why did it not summon the spirit once more to restore itself once more?"

"Maybe it takes longer to summon a defeated divine spirit…"

The Knight was still correct, it does take longer to summon back a divine spirit defeated by the Knight, because it no longer existed, the Knight did not need to mention that though. She then threw the question that the Knight had wanted to avoid. "You said something about being a hero?"

The Knight had included it in the report to make its strength look less domineering. "I have the hero skill. I had not claimed to be one. This skill gives me additional power when people put their full believes in me. Even now I can still feel their hopes."

They all had strange expressions, ranging from annoyance to admiration, the Knight could sense these due to the hero skill. Rode looked up and spoke, "Well, it has been a long time before the world had birthed a hero."

Reble was of the opposite opinion. "I say that its strange, why now?"

Some of the knights felt some dis-contempt because they were the protectors of the world. This made it like they were not doing their job, and a random person is supposed to do this, which they had worked for. No ill-will or jealousy, it was just a wonder of why.

This did not last though, they were washed with relief and joy, when they remembered that all this meant is that soon enough, they will have a competent knight banneret join their ranks, a promising prospect for a knight Bachelor candidate, this would help with their duties greatly.

After that the meeting adjourned, they had gotten their confirmations. Then the Knight asked if it could ask a question, to which Devan agreed. "I sensed a strange presence when entering the city, beneath all of it lies the true beast Wargnier, why is it everyone seems to be attuned to its existence."

That was when Sharli answered, "Oh, that. I tamed it, most people cannot sense it, it's exceptionally good at masking its presence. It's going to be getting a reprimanding; someone actually felt it."

"Yes, that beast is very strong, even for a normal true beast, a living disaster, missing its presence was near impossible for me."

The Knight then left the room, Zuri was gone on duty, so the Knight just headed for the pattern smiths, they usually have good trading tools. This is the headquarters; they ought to have be making more potent tools.

Maybe the Knight should go to the guild and take a quest, it did have a weeks' worth of time, on its hands. That will have to wait.
