Chapter 7 - LOVE UNDER THE FIRE

The cold metal of the gun glinted under the flickering warehouse light.

Victor Romano stood in the doorway, rainwater dripping from the edge of his long black coat. His finger rested calmly on the trigger, his eyes fixed on Liam and Ava as if he were watching a show he had been waiting years to see.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy. Dangerous. Suffocating.

Ava's heart pounded so loudly she could hear it in her ears. Her hands trembled as she clutched Liam's shirt, her body still weak from the ropes that had held her captive for hours.

Liam slowly stepped in front of her, shielding her with his body.

His voice was low and steady.

"Let her go, Victor."

Victor let out a short laugh.

"You always did have a soft spot for pretty girls," he said mockingly. "It's your greatest weakness."

Liam's eyes darkened.

"My weakness," he replied coldly, "is trusting monsters like you."

The tension in the air thickened.

Rain hammered against the warehouse roof, thunder rumbling in the distance like a warning from the sky.

Victor tilted his head slightly, studying Ava.

"She looks frightened," he said calmly. "Tell me, girl… did he tell you what kind of man he really is?"

Ava swallowed hard, her voice shaking but determined.

"I know enough."

Victor smirked.

"Do you?" he asked. "Did he tell you about the blood on his hands? About the people who died because of him?"

Her heart skipped.

She glanced at Liam.

For the first time, she saw guilt flicker across his face.

Victor's smile widened.

"Ah," he said softly. "So he didn't."

Liam's jaw tightened.

"Shut up, Victor."

But Victor continued, his voice smooth and poisonous.

"Five years ago," he said, "your beloved hero ordered an attack on one of my shipments. A simple business deal, he called it. But the explosion killed more than cargo."

Ava's breath caught.

Victor's eyes burned with hatred.

"It killed my younger brother."

The words slammed into the room like a bomb.

Silence followed.

Heavy. Painful.

Ava slowly turned toward Liam, her eyes filled with shock.

"Is that true?" she whispered.

Liam's chest rose and fell as he struggled to breathe.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then finally—

"Yes."

The single word felt like a knife.

Tears filled Ava's eyes.

"You… killed someone's brother?"

Liam shook his head quickly.

"I didn't mean to," he said urgently. "It was supposed to be an empty shipment. We didn't know he was there."

Victor's laughter echoed through the warehouse.

"Excuses," he said bitterly. "Always excuses."

His finger tightened slightly on the trigger.

"You took my family from me," he continued. "So now, I'll take yours."

Fear surged through Ava's body.

Her heart raced as Victor slowly raised the gun higher—aiming directly at Liam's chest.

Everything seemed to slow down.

The sound of rain.

The flicker of the light.

The pounding of her heartbeat.

Then—

BANG!

The gunshot exploded through the warehouse.

Ava screamed.

But Liam didn't fall.

Instead, Marcus burst into the room from the side, tackling Victor to the ground just as the shot fired. The bullet slammed into a metal wall behind them, sparks flying into the air.

Chaos erupted instantly.

Guards rushed in.

Gunfire echoed.

Men shouted.

Liam grabbed Ava's hand tightly.

"Stay behind me!" he ordered.

She nodded, her body shaking violently.

Another gunshot rang out.

Marcus and Victor struggled on the floor, fists flying as they fought fiercely. Victor punched Marcus in the jaw, breaking free and scrambling toward a fallen weapon.

But Liam was faster.

He kicked the gun away, sending it sliding across the concrete floor.

Victor staggered backward, breathing heavily.

For a moment, the two men stared at each other.

Years of hatred burned between them.

"You should have killed me when you had the chance," Victor growled.

Liam's voice was cold.

"I'm not a murderer."

Victor sneered.

"You already are."

Suddenly, Victor reached into his coat and pulled out a small remote device.

Ava's eyes widened.

"What is that?" she gasped.

Victor's smile returned—slow and terrifying.

"A final goodbye gift."

Liam's blood ran cold.

"Bomb," he whispered.

The realization hit instantly.

Victor lifted the remote slightly.

"Ten seconds," he said calmly. "Enough time for you to regret everything."

Panic exploded through the room.

Marcus shouted, "Everyone out! NOW!"

Men began running toward the exit.

Ava's legs felt weak, but Liam grabbed her hand and pulled her forward.

"Move!" he commanded.

They sprinted down the hallway as alarms began blaring loudly throughout the warehouse.

Red warning lights flashed on the walls.

Sirens screamed.

The countdown felt invisible—but deadly.

Nine seconds.

Ava stumbled, her strength fading.

"I can't—" she cried.

Liam didn't hesitate.

He lifted her into his arms.

"Hold on to me," he said.

She wrapped her arms around his neck tightly, her heart racing against his chest.

Eight seconds.

They reached the main entrance.

Rain poured heavily outside, soaking the ground.

Seven seconds.

Marcus burst through the door ahead of them.

"This way!" he shouted.

Six seconds.

They ran across the open yard toward the armored vehicles.

Five seconds.

Behind them, Victor stood in the warehouse doorway, watching calmly.

He wasn't running.

He wasn't afraid.

He was smiling.

Four seconds.

Ava looked back and saw him raise the remote one last time.

Three seconds.

"Go!" Marcus yelled.

Two seconds.

Liam dove forward, shielding Ava with his body as they hit the wet pavement.

One second.

BOOM!

The explosion ripped through the night.

Fire burst from the warehouse, flames shooting into the sky as the building collapsed behind them. The shockwave slammed into the ground, sending debris flying in every direction.

The heat burned against their backs.

Glass shattered.

Metal twisted.

Smoke filled the air.

For a moment, everything went silent.

Then—

Ava slowly opened her eyes.

Her ears rang loudly, and her body trembled from the impact. She felt Liam's arms wrapped tightly around her, protecting her from the explosion.

"Liam…" she whispered weakly.

He lifted his head immediately.

"I'm here," he said softly.

Relief flooded her chest.

She touched his face gently, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"You saved me," she said.

He shook his head.

"No," he replied quietly.

"We saved each other."

Sirens wailed in the distance as emergency vehicles approached.

Rain continued to fall, washing away the smoke and ashes.

Marcus walked toward them, coughing slightly but alive.

"It's over," he said.

But Liam's expression remained dark.

He stared at the burning ruins of the warehouse, his eyes filled with suspicion.

"No," he said slowly.

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Liam's voice turned cold.

"We didn't find Victor's body."

A chill ran through Ava's spine.

She looked back at the flames rising into the night sky.

The danger wasn't gone.

Not yet.

Liam wrapped an arm protectively around her shoulders.

And deep in his heart, he made a silent promise:

No matter what happens next, he would never let her go again.
