Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Too Close To Ignore

She didn't argue.

And that—

that was the first thing that felt wrong.

Not the rules.

Not the woman.

Not even the bond tightening in her chest like it had something to prove.

It was that.

The absence of resistance.

Lena stood there for a second longer than she meant to, her fingers still slightly curled at her sides, her breathing steady when it shouldn't have been.

She should have said something.

Pushed back.

Questioned it again.

But the words didn't come.

And worse—

she wasn't even sure she wanted them to.

Her brows pulled together faintly.

"…That's not normal," she murmured.

"No."

His voice came easily, like always.

Calm. Certain. Unmoved.

Lena let out a quiet breath, almost a tired one. "You really don't help, do you?"

"It isn't meant to help."

"Yeah," she muttered. "I figured."

Silence settled again—but it didn't feel like before.

It didn't feel heavy or tense.

It felt… still.

And that made it worse.

Because she was starting to get used to it.

"Come."

The word was simple.

But it landed.

Not just in the air—

in her.

Lena felt it instantly.

That shift.

That quiet pull in her chest tightening just slightly, not painful, not sharp—just enough to guide.

Her body reacted before she fully decided to.

She didn't move right away.

But she could feel it.

That difference.

Like staying where she was wasn't wrong—

but moving felt… right.

And that realisation alone made something in her chest tighten again.

"…You don't even have to explain anymore, do you?" she said quietly.

"No."

"That's… not a good thing."

"It's not meant to be."

She exhaled slowly, her gaze lingering on him for a second longer than necessary.

Then she moved.

One step.

Then another.

And just like before—

the tension eased.

Not gone.

Just… settling.

Like something inside her approved.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

"…I hate that this works."

"Yes."

Of course.

They moved past the woman.

Lena felt her eyes on her—sharp, measuring—but she didn't turn back.

Didn't react.

Because something else had her attention now.

The space ahead opened into a larger room.

Dim lighting.

Minimal furniture.

Everything placed with intention.

Nothing unnecessary.

It didn't feel like somewhere someone lived.

It felt like somewhere someone was placed.

The thought came quietly.

But it stayed.

"…This is where I stay?" Lena asked.

"Yes."

She stepped further inside, her gaze moving slowly across the room, taking everything in.

The silence here was different.

Not empty.

Contained.

Like even sound knew where it was allowed to exist.

"…It doesn't feel like a room," she said.

"It isn't."

That answer didn't confuse her anymore.

It just… confirmed things she hadn't said out loud.

She took another step.

Then another.

Each movement slower now.

More deliberate.

Like her body was adjusting ahead of her mind.

"…And I'm supposed to get used to this," she said.

"Yes."

She let out a quiet breath.

"…Of course."

Her gaze shifted back to him.

And this time—

she didn't look away.

Not immediately.

That alone made her pause.

"…You're closer than before," she said.

"I haven't moved."

"…I know," she murmured.

But that wasn't it.

It felt closer.

Not distance.

Not space.

Something else.

The bond.

It wasn't just there anymore.

It was… present.

Clearer.

Sharper.

Her chest tightened slightly as she became aware of it again.

Not painful.

Not overwhelming.

Just—

constant.

"…This is different," she said quietly.

"Yes."

Her fingers curled again at her sides.

"…It's not just reacting anymore."

"No."

"Then what is it doing?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that made her look at him more closely.

"It's settling."

The word landed softly.

But it stayed.

Lena swallowed.

"…That doesn't sound temporary."

"It isn't."

Her breath caught slightly.

Of course it wasn't.

Nothing about this had been.

She looked away for a moment, her thoughts slower now.

Not scattered.

Not panicked.

Just… quiet.

And that quiet—

that calm—

felt wrong.

"…I should still be fighting this," she said.

"Yes."

"I'm not."

"No."

She nodded once.

Slowly.

Because that part—

that part was clear now.

"…That's the problem."

"Yes."

And again—

no denial.

No comfort.

Just truth.

Lena let out a breath, her shoulders lowering slightly.

"…I don't feel trapped the way I should," she admitted.

Saying it out loud made it worse.

Because it made it real.

And once it was real—

she couldn't ignore it anymore.

"That's because you're not resisting it anymore," he said.

"That's not a good thing."

"It's necessary."

She shook her head faintly.

"…You keep saying that like it makes it easier."

"It isn't meant to."

"…Yeah," she whispered. "I'm starting to understand that."

Silence settled again.

But this time—

it didn't feel heavy.

It didn't feel tense.

It felt…

close.

And that was new.

Lena looked at him again.

Really looked.

Not with resistance.

Not with suspicion.

Just—

awareness.

And the longer she did—

the more she felt it.

That pull.

Not dragging.

Not forcing.

Just there.

Steady.

Unavoidable.

Her breath slowed slightly without her meaning it to.

And that—

that scared her.

"…This is too much," she said softly.

"No."

Her brows pulled together. "You don't think so?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because it's only beginning."

That—

that landed.

Lena went still.

"…That's not reassuring."

"It's not meant to be."

Of course.

She let out a slow breath, looking away.

But not to escape.

To steady herself.

Because now—

she could feel it clearly.

This wasn't just happening around her.

It was happening inside her.

And for the first time—

she couldn't tell where it ended.

Her fingers curled again.

"…This is going to be a problem," she said quietly.

"Yes."

She nodded slowly.

Because now—

she understood exactly why.

And understanding it didn't make it easier.

It just made it real.
