Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Friction Lines

Kai didn't look back.

Not when the murmur of voices faded behind him. Not when the terrace noise dissolved into a distant hum. Not even when the instinct to confirm just once pressed quietly at the edge of his awareness. He resisted it. Forced his steps to remain even, measured, controlled as he descended the stairs and let the cooler air of the lower level settle against his skin.

He had heard enough.

That should have been the end of it.

But it wasn't.

Because hearing it didn't resolve anything it sharpened everything. Elias had chosen him. Not accidentally. Not casually. Deliberately. The word "unique" lingered, heavier now than it had any right to be. Not because of what it meant on the surface but because of the context behind it. It wasn't praise. It wasn't admiration. It was classification. Selection.

Kai exhaled slowly, pushing the thought aside as he stepped into the open courtyard below. The evening had settled deeper now, shadows stretching longer across the campus, lights flickering on in quiet intervals. Students moved in scattered groups, laughter cutting through the calm, conversations blending into background noise.

Normal.

Everything looked normal.

But Kai didn't feel it.

Because once you noticed something

You couldn't unsee it.

"Kai!"

Riku's voice cut through the air before he even turned.

Kai slowed slightly, glancing over his shoulder just as Riku jogged down the last few steps, hands shoved loosely into his pockets, a grin already forming on his face.

"Why'd you disappear like that?" Riku asked, falling into step beside him. "We just got up there."

Kai didn't answer immediately.

"I needed air," he said finally.

Riku snorted. "You were already outside."

Kai didn't respond.

Riku glanced at him sideways, his grin shifting slightly not fading, but changing. Sharper. More observant than usual.

"…You're acting weird," he said.

Kai's gaze remained forward. "I'm not."

"That's exactly what people say when they are," Riku shot back easily.

Kai exhaled quietly, but didn't argue.

Riku let the silence stretch for a moment before speaking again, this time more casually.

"So," he said, "you and Elias."

Kai's steps didn't falter.

But internally

His focus sharpened instantly.

"What about it?" Kai asked.

Riku hummed. "Nothing. Just…" He tilted his head slightly, studying Kai's expression. "…interesting."

Kai didn't react outwardly.

But that word

Again.

He was starting to hate it.

Riku's grin widened slightly, clearly enjoying himself now. "You know people are talking, right?"

Kai's gaze flicked toward him briefly.

"People talk about everything," he said.

"Yeah," Riku replied lightly. "But not like this."

Kai didn't respond.

Riku leaned in slightly, lowering his voice just enough to make it feel more intentional.

"He doesn't look at people the way he looks at you."

Kai stopped walking.

Not abruptly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Riku stopped too, his grin softening into something more curious now.

Kai turned his head slightly, meeting his gaze.

"And how does he look at me?" Kai asked.

Riku paused.

For a moment, it seemed like he might actually think about the answer instead of throwing out something casual.

"…Like he already knows something," Riku said finally.

Kai held his gaze.

Then looked away.

That answer

Was too accurate.

Riku watched him for a moment longer before straightening, his usual teasing expression slipping back into place.

"Well," he said, stretching his arms slightly, "if he's that interested, I kinda want to see how far it goes."

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That's not your concern," he said.

Riku grinned.

"Oh, it is now."

Kai didn't like that tone.

Didn't like the implication behind it.

"Don't," Kai said simply.

Riku blinked. "Don't what?"

Kai turned fully toward him now, his expression calm but edged.

"Don't turn this into something it's not."

Riku raised his hands slightly in mock surrender, though the amusement didn't leave his eyes.

"Relax," he said. "I'm just curious."

Kai didn't respond.

Because curiosity

Was exactly how this had started.

And look where that had led.

Riku watched him for another second before shrugging lightly. "Fine. I won't push."

Kai held his gaze.

Riku's grin returned, slow and deliberate.

"…Much."

Kai exhaled quietly, already regretting engaging in the conversation at all.

"Do what you want," he said, turning away.

Riku followed.

Of course he did.

And Kai already knew

That wasn't the end of it.

The next day came with a shift in atmosphere.

Not obvious.

Not loud.

But present.

Kai noticed it the moment he stepped onto campus.

Glances lingered slightly longer. Conversations dipped when he passed. Not enough to be blatant but enough to register.

Riku hadn't been exaggerating.

People were noticing.

Kai adjusted his bag on his shoulder, ignoring it as he moved toward the main courtyard.

Focus.

That was what mattered.

Not speculation.

Not rumors.

Just

Clarity.

And if clarity meant observing Elias directly

Then so be it.

Kai's gaze moved across the courtyard and found him immediately.

Elias stood near one of the central walkways, speaking to someone briefly before the conversation ended. His posture remained composed, his presence steady as always.

But this time

Kai didn't look away.

Not immediately.

And Elias

Noticed.

Of course he did.

Their eyes met across the distance.

And just like that

The awareness snapped back into place.

Immediate.

Unavoidable.

Kai held the gaze for a second longer than necessary.

Then turned.

And walked forward.

Not away.

Toward.

Elias didn't move.

Didn't step forward.

But his attention remained fixed.

Kai felt it with every step.

Measured.

Calculated.

Intentional.

And just as the distance between them began to close

Riku appeared.

Right on cue.

"Hey!" Riku called casually, sliding into Kai's path with perfect timing.

Kai stopped.

Barely.

His expression remained controlled, but his gaze sharpened slightly.

Riku grinned, completely unfazed. "You didn't wait for me."

"I didn't know I was supposed to," Kai replied flatly.

Riku laughed. "Cold."

Then, as if only just noticing

He glanced toward Elias.

"Oh," he said lightly, "there he is."

Kai didn't react.

But internally

Everything stilled.

Riku turned slightly, facing Elias more directly now, his grin widening just a fraction.

"Vanderwood," he greeted casually.

Elias didn't respond immediately.

His gaze flicked from Kai

To Riku.

And in that moment

Something shifted.

Subtle.

Sharp.

Almost imperceptible.

But Kai caught it.

Of course he did.

Riku didn't seem to notice.

Or maybe

He did.

Because the next thing he did was deliberate.

"Funny," Riku continued, his tone still light, still casual but edged with something intentional now. "I was just talking about you."

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

Riku

Was pushing.

Elias' expression didn't change.

But his gaze

Sharpened.

"What about me?" Elias asked.

Calm.

Even.

Controlled.

Riku shrugged. "Just how… interesting things have been lately."

Kai's jaw tightened slightly.

That word again.

Riku glanced at Kai briefly, then back at Elias.

"You seem to have a type," he added.

Silence.

For a fraction of a second

The air shifted.

Kai felt it instantly.

That tension.

That pressure.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

But there.

Focused.

Directed.

At Riku.

Elias didn't move.

Didn't react outwardly.

But his gaze

Locked onto Riku.

And this time

There was no softness in it.

No quiet amusement.

No detached curiosity.

Just

Something colder.

Sharper.

Controlled.

But unmistakable.

Riku froze.

It was subtle.

Barely noticeable to anyone else.

But Kai saw it.

The slight pause.

The flicker in his expression.

The way his grin faltered

Just for a second.

And in that second

Kai understood something important.

Elias didn't need to raise his voice.

Didn't need to act.

Didn't need to threaten.

Because that look alone

Was enough.

Kai's breath slowed slightly.

Because what he felt in that moment

Wasn't just awareness.

It wasn't just tension.

It was something deeper.

Something that settled in his chest with quiet intensity.

Fear.

And

Fascination.

Because Elias hadn't lost control.

Not even for a second.

He had simply

Focused it.

Directed it.

And Riku

Had felt it immediately.

Kai's gaze shifted between them, his mind already processing the shift, the implication, the unspoken boundary that had just been drawn without a single word.

And somehow

That made everything more dangerous than before.
