Chapter 18 - The Third Death: Poisoned Trust

"Is there a man named Lucas?"

"No… not here."

Carlos stepped forward respectfully.

"May I ask why you're looking for him?"

The man scratched his eyebrow again.

"Is Antonio here?"

Carlos tilted his head slightly. Behind Luka stood a Japanese girl with short black hair, delicate features, and a small frame. There were no guards with him—just her.

Luka glanced around, then walked toward the rooms.

"We'll wait here until he arrives."

He entered one of the rooms, and everyone inside immediately left. Luka sat down and placed his hand on the seat beside him.

"Shiki, sit."

She obeyed instantly. He took out his phone, but it slipped from his hand and fell to the floor. He bent down to pick it up.

Carlos's behavior made everyone tense.

Luka—the older brother of Casimiro.

An A-level member.

The organization's biggest smuggler.

He was the one who brought Casimiro in… and helped him rise.

As for Shiki—she was a professional killer.

A machine that knew nothing but bloodshed.

Merciless.

His presence at headquarters meant nothing good.

Harry entered with his sister. The atmosphere was suffocating.

He asked the man beside him,

"What happened?"

The man smiled faintly, as if even he found it strange.

"Luka Beasley… he's here."

Harry swallowed hard and began biting his nails.

"Why would someone like him be here?"

"He's asking about Lucas."

Karl looked exhausted, her eyes dry from too much crying. But the moment she heard Lucas's name, a spark returned to them. She lifted her gaze and asked softly, despite her fatigue:

"Lucas? Did you say Lucas? Why?"

Harry became more certain that there was something between Lucas and his sister. Part of him began to understand Lucas's earlier words… and why he had told him to stop using drugs.

But another part of him rejected it.

He didn't want his sister involved with someone who killed in cold blood.

The image was still burned into his mind—

Lucas crushing a man's skull.

Karl replied,

"I don't know… but it doesn't look good."

He pointed toward Carlos, who had his phone to his ear, trying to call Lucas.

"Come on… pick up."

Shock after shock hit Karl. Yesterday, Lucas had left without saying goodbye. She had heard he got into a fight with someone.

She pulled out her phone to call him—but Harry stopped her.

His face was filled with sadness as he said firmly,

"Stop… it's not our problem."

His tone only made her angrier. She still hadn't forgiven him for not telling her about their father.

Elsewhere, far from the headquarters…

In front of a large house surrounded by orchards and trees, Lucas stood at the gate.

"This is the location… the GPS was on Casimiro's phone."

He looked at the house.

"A house… huh."

His excitement faded slightly. He had expected to find something shocking—something useful. But this… was just a house.

He stepped closer to the door and noticed a car he recognized.

His expression changed. He whispered,

"So… that's how it is."

He looked again.

A gray sports car with a white roof.

Beside it—a black Ferrari.

And a large motorcycle parked in front.

Lucas recognized the gray car.

Antonio's car.

The same car… where Steven's body had been placed in the trunk.

Every time he remembered that day, his chest tightened.

Casimiro had been plotting to kill Antonio.

He rang the doorbell.

After a long wait, a house guard came out. He wore blue clothes and looked Mexican.

"How can I help you?"

His English was broken.

Lucas smiled.

"Is Antonio here?"

The guard scratched his head, thinking. Lucas quickly added,

"I work with him… I mean, for him. My name is Lucas."

The guard gestured for him to wait, then went inside.

Lucas stood there, waiting.

A small smile appeared on his face.

This was an opportunity—

To gain Antonio's trust…

And help him with Casimiro's situation.

Two birds with one stone.

Still… the fear inside him didn't disappear.

Antonio knew him well.

And nothing was guaranteed.

The guard returned, smiling this time. He opened the gate.

"He's waiting for you inside."

Lucas entered slowly.

With every step, caution followed him.

He had to convince him…

Because someone wanted him dead.

And that wouldn't be easy.

The floor was white, lined with black patterns, polished so perfectly it reflected your image. On the left, a staircase led upstairs. On the right, a wide corridor large enough for a car to pass through.

In front of him was a massive screen mounted on the wall. Below it, a glass table. Behind it, a large black sofa that could fit five people.

At the far right, a glass door revealed a swimming pool.

Lucas looked around, impressed by the luxury.

(Do all B-level members live like this?)

He placed his hand on the wall.

(Or is Antonio… a special case?)

A young girl entered through the glass door, wearing a swimsuit. Water dripped from her body as she approached him.

Lucas swallowed, confused by the way she was looking at him.

It was strange…

As if she knew him.

"Hi… what's your name?"

She didn't answer. Instead, she asked:

"Is your name Lucas?"

He leaned back slightly.

"How do you know my name?"

She covered her mouth in surprise.

"Did my uncle call you?"

"Your uncle? You mean Antonio?"

She nodded eagerly.

"No… no one told me."

She lightly hit her forehead, disappointed.

"He won again…"

She turned to leave, but Lucas stopped her.

"What do you mean?"

She glanced back at him while continuing toward the pool.

"He challenged me this morning. Said someone with orange hair named Lucas would come."

Lucas froze.

"What? How did he know?"

She shrugged.

"It's not the first time…"

Fear seeped into him once again. Tangled thoughts spun through his mind, doubt creeping deeper into his core.

How did he know? Was he watching him? Since when? How?

Questions struck him all at once.

— "Lucas."

He turned. Antonio stepped out of a nearby room, wearing his usual wide smile. He raised his hands in welcome. Lucas tried to shake his hand, but Antonio ignored it, placing his palm gently on Lucas's back instead.

— "Welcome. What do you think of the house?"

He nudged him lightly toward another room, and they entered together.

Lucas replied:

— "It's… impressive."

Antonio laughed.

They were in the kitchen. Across from them, in a seating area, stood a Spanish woman—short, with curly black hair—holding a glass of apple juice. She looked at Lucas in a way that felt… off.

Antonio gestured toward her:

— "This is my older sister, Maria."

Then he pointed at Lucas:

— "He works with me. Lucas."

Lucas frowned internally. (Works with him?)

There was something strange about Antonio… when he spoke, you didn't want him to stop. Trust came too easily. Comfort… too natural.

Maria approached and shook Lucas's hand with a bright smile.

— "Nice to meet you."

— "You too."

She handed the juice to Antonio, then turned to leave.

— "Maria."

She looked back at him, slightly concerned. Antonio smiled and gestured toward Lucas.

— "Is he a statue? Where's his drink?"

She laughed lightly.

— "Sorry, I'll be right back."

Lucas sat with Antonio. Antonio turned on the TV, placing the juice on the table. He looked at Lucas with curiosity, rubbing his nose.

— "So tell me, Lucas… what brings you here?"

Lucas's brows lowered in confusion. (He's not going to ask how I found his house?)

Before he could answer, Maria returned, placing a glass of juice in front of him. Lucas smiled.

— "Thank you."

She said:

— "If you need anything, call me. I'll be in a nearby room."

She left.

Antonio turned back to Lucas.

— "She's nice, isn't she?"

Lucas nodded slightly.

Then Antonio suddenly smiled.

— "What do you think? Want to marry her?"

Lucas choked, coughing. Antonio burst out laughing, pointing at the table.

— "There… take a tissue. Wipe your mouth."

Lucas stood and grabbed one. (Was he serious… or joking?)

He exhaled, remembering why he came. (I have to tell him.)

He returned to his seat. Antonio was watching TV, laughing casually. He took a sip of his drink.

— "Amaaaazing… try it."

Lucas took only a small sip.

— "Antonio, the reason—"

Antonio cut him off mid-sentence:

— "You didn't like it?"

Lucas paused.

— "What?"

Antonio pointed at the juice.

— "My sister made it… is it bad?"

Lucas replied quickly while taking another sip:

— "No, it's great."

Antonio smiled.

— "I know."

Lucas wiped his mouth and steadied himself. He had to convince him.

— "Antonio… there's a reason I came to your house."

Antonio kept watching TV, nodding slightly as if listening.

Lucas continued, but every word came out heavy… broken…

He paused between sentences, tense, trying to control his thoughts.

— "Something happened… yesterday. Something bad… concerning you."

He coughed lightly, then continued:

— "Yesterday I met—"

He coughed again—harder this time. It felt like sand filled his chest, scraping from the inside.

— "Sorry… I don't know what's wrong… I need to—"

A violent cough cut him off.

Antonio looked at him, puzzled.

— "Do you want water?"

Lucas shook his head. He couldn't speak anymore. Antonio stood and walked to the kitchen.

The coughing worsened… stronger… more savage.

(What's happening to me… I can't breathe…)

He tried to stand—but his body failed him. He collapsed onto the floor.

A voice echoed:

— "Is the juice good, Arthur?"

He couldn't breathe. His face turned purple, his body trembling, struggling… failing. He had reached his limit.

— "I'll tell you, Arthur… Antonio switched his drink with yours when he went to get the tissue."

The realization struck like lightning.

But why…? Why would he do this?

In that moment—just before his final breath—Lucas lifted his eyes with great effort.

Antonio was walking toward him.

His figure was blurred… distorted…

But he was smiling.

And dragging something behind him.

A body.

His sister.

Dead.

He gripped her black hair tightly, dragging her across the floor like garbage.

He spoke—but Lucas couldn't hear clearly. His voice felt distant… like it came from the bottom of an empty well:

— "Sorry… I had to do it."

Lucas looked up at the ceiling, his hands clutching his throat, nails digging into his skin from the pain.

(Again… I was used…)

(This pain… why do I have to suffer? Why do I have to die like this?)

(I forgot… why did I forget? I'm an idiot… why did I forget?)

(If you're not a monster… you'll be devoured.)

Lucas died… for the third time.
