Chapter 9 - Academic Life

Once settled in the Academy of Magic, the girl received a uniform and a student took her around to familiarize herself with the place.

He took her to the classrooms, training grounds, multiple libraries, each for a different department, the teachers' building, the student council building, and finally the dormitories.

But the girl had already been to the dormitories to put down her uniform.

It was the Archmage who took her there, though the woman clearly wasn't all that happy to do it.

After returning to the dormitory, it turned out that the student who had taken her around (a girl) was also her new dorm mate.

"We will be living together from now on?" the dorm mate was clearly excited.

"I'm Josephine Ravelle! What's your name?" she asked quickly.

The girl looked at her excited roommate and wondered how her expression would change once she found out what power she possessed.

"I have no name," she answered truthfully.

Josephine's eyes widened in surprise before clear pity appeared in them.

"It must have been hard, living like that..."

The girl shook her head.

"Not really, actually. Since it had always been like that, I got used to it."

Josephine still felt like the girl was very pitiful.

"And no one ever wanted to give you a name? You don't at least have a nickname?"

The girl shook her head again, already coming up with a lie so she wouldn't have to reveal her power yet.

"Where I was born, being named is a big deal. If you aren't named at birth, then you have to live like that. So, I couldn't really have been named by anyone."

"Then, why didn't you go live elsewhere?" Josephine had a very naive view of the world, but she wasn't stupid.

If one place didn't allow giving new names, just go to a place that allowed it; problem solved.

The girl smiled at that question.

"Where could I have gone? Everyone I knew was there. I didn't want to leave them. Even now I miss them."

Josephine finally gave up on the topic of the girl's name, but the pity from her gaze didn't disappear.

She still thought that it was too harsh for someone to not have a name.

"We will be together a lot since we are roommates now. So let's be friends!" she beamed.

The girl nodded to that, but she didn't really think much about it.

Sooner or later, the Emperor and Archmage's plan would be set in motion, and she wouldn't be able to stay in the Academy any longer.

In the first place, they didn't want her there.

Still, that didn't mean the girl was against making friends in the Academy.

As long as they weren't plot‑relevant or related to the protagonists in other ways.

So, the girl started settling in the Academy of Magic.

The next few days were the last days of holidays, so students were slowly returning to the dorms.

But no classes were yet, so the girl could relax and laze around all she wanted.

She was guessing those would be the last few days she would be able to relax before things would go awry.

Because since she was in the Royal Capital, it was unavoidable.

In the next few days, the girl came to the habit of no longer telling new people she met that she didn't have a name.

She just avoided the topic altogether by talking about other things.

Because once the conversations started flowing, they would momentarily forget about it.

And after that, in the middle of a conversation, they would think it too awkward to ask her for a name.

So the question could be avoided.

Of course, there were some cases when Josephine met some of her friends when she was with the girl, and they were asking who the girl was.

But beforehand, the girl had already told Josephine that she didn't really want everyone to know that she didn't have a name.

So, being sensible, Josephine always just told her friends that the girl was her new roommate.

Like that, the girl lived in the Academy for the last days of the holidays until came the day of the first classes.

She entered her classroom and sat in a random empty seat somewhere in the middle of the classroom, where she had a good view of the board and the teacher's desk.

She didn't have the class with Josephine, so she was sitting alone.

Or, so she thought she would be, until she spotted a familiar face.

It was one of Josephine's friends, whom the girl had met just the day before.

The boy naturally sat down next to her, not even asking if the seat was taken.

"You know," he started.

"After we parted ways, I realized I never asked you your name. Tell me..."

The girl was about to say something evasive when the bell rang.

The students in the Academy were all strictly taught to stay completely silent once the bell rang, even if the teacher wasn't in the classroom, otherwise they would get their points deducted.

The ones responsible for the point deduction were teachers on standby in the hallway.

They stayed there until all the classroom doors were closed and the lessons started.

So, the guy next to the girl no longer inquired about her name, going completely silent.

Not even a minute later, the teacher entered the classroom and started taking attendance.

He went through the whole list (in the process of which the girl found out the name of the boy next to her; Albert Hilberg) before stopping at the last name.

Or rather, what seemed to try to be a name, but it was written so terribly, he couldn't read it.

The teacher was beforehand informed about the girl's presence in his classroom and the state of her name, so the teacher knew the scribble was supposed to be the name of the girl with the Power of Death and Extinction.

He looked up from the paper and swept his gaze over the room.

"Anyone I missed?" he asked.

To that, already knowing and being informed it would happen, the girl raised her hand.

The teacher looked at her and nodded a bit.

"You are the new student?" he asked, though he already knew the answer.

"Yes, teacher!" the girl nodded.

"Then make sure to pay attention in class. The class has already gone through lectures about the basics of this subject, and it's probably like that with the other subjects, too, so you will need to catch up on your own."

The teacher spoke naturally.

After that, the lesson went on like it normally would.

And the situation was similar during the other lessons too.

The teachers didn't bother to remember much about the girl, because they all knew she was at the Academy just temporarily.

They didn't know why she ended up in the Academy of Magic and most of them didn't even care.

They just knew she possessed the Power of Death and Extinction (which made them frown at her presence at the prestigious Academy) and that she would soon be gone, because His Majesty the Emperor and the headmaster of the Academy, also known as the Archmage, were planning something with all the wielders of the Power of Death and Extinction.

Apparently, there were so few of them in the whole Empire, they could be counted on the fingers of both hands, but with how deadly the power was, the Emperor's plan had to be big.

The girl was naturally aware of the crooked way the teachers looked at her, but she didn't care.

She just needed to be prepared for what was to come.

So, whenever she had time, she disappeared into the old training grounds, which were restricted to students because they were apparently dangerous due to old construction.

There, the girl trained her power.

But she no longer focused on untangling the power thread around her heart.

For that, she would need more time and some peace and quiet.

Instead, she just used the power as much as she could, testing all she could do with it.

She couldn't afford to make a mistake once the day of the plan's start came.

Actually, what she was doing at the moment was playing into the cards of the original story, but at the moment, she didn't care about it.

There was still time, so she didn't need to worry about her future.

Originally, when she was back at the town, she wanted to get away from the plot as soon as possible, but back then, she wasn't aware of the Emperor and Archmage's plan.

Being aware of it, her own plans had changed.

For a while, she would have to perfectly align herself with the plot to later slip out of it.

It was not like the girl minded.

In her past life, she had to learn to quickly adapt her plans, so actually changing her plan to just act in accordance with an already laid‑out script was as simple as it could get.

The troublesome part would only come later, when she would have to leave the plot before she got in too deep.
