Chapter 76 - The Prince, the Heiress, and the Truth

Alex cleared his throat and began to speak. He had gotten good at this, having rehearsed and even told his story half a dozen times. He knew exactly what to emphasize and when to pause for effect, weaving a narrative that was equal parts confession and strategic reveal. He spoke of his desire to understand his chosen path without the shadow of his family's name, of his initial shock at meeting Hana and his growing affection, of his silent struggle to reconcile his two lives.

Hana and Alex's father, who had heard the tale before, followed along with subtle shifts in their expressions. Hana offered a sympathetic nod at moments of doubt, and Alex's father's mouth would tighten slightly at moments of tension. Hana's father, however, gave little away, his face a stony mask. But her mother and, even more so, her brother, were clearly mesmerized, their eyes wide with disbelief and fascination.

When Alex finally finished, a tense silence filled the room. Then, Hana's brother let out a long, exasperated "Yahhh." He shook his head, a mixture of frustration and awe on his face. "I could always tell there was something more with you, I even said that to you. I wish I had known sooner. It would have made things so much simpler." The words, though simple, were a powerful admission. All he had needed was to understand that Alex was a high-born, the rest was just incidental drama.

Hana's mother, her face softened, walked around the table to stand in front of Alex, who immediately stood to meet her. She bowed deeply to him. "Truly, you were sent here for a purpose," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "There can be no other word. Destiny."

Alex bowed in return, his heart swelling with gratitude. Hana's mother then returned to her place behind her daughter, her hand resting on Hana's shoulder as a silent, loving gesture.

The Chairman straightened in his chair, his gaze fixed on Alex. "Why did you not just explain yourself right away?" he said, his voice low and pointed. "Why go through all this just to end up in the same place as you would have been then? So much added grief could have been avoided."

Alex thought for a few seconds, letting out a small, thoughtful sound. "The truth will always bring answers," he said, "but the journey is where you learn your lessons and truths, which will always bring answers."

The Chairman scoffed, a hint of a smile at the corner of his lips. "What kind of Confucian speak is that?" he said, his voice trailing off as he shook his head.

Alex's father now chimed in, his voice firm. "Well, I don't know first-hand everything as it took place. I can tell you that Alex would never have worked so hard on this deal, from both sides, if he didn't believe in it. If he didn't believe you and your family were right to join such a partnership with my organization and visa-versa."

He pointed a finger at the beautiful brooch Hana had on. "Seeing that brooch on that young lady is all I would need to know to understand my son's feelings about her, if nothing else." He then looked at Alex. "That was given to Alex by his mother before she passed away. He was meant to give it to the one he intended to spend the rest of his life with. But knowing my son, I have a feeling he didn't explain that."

Hana held the brooch in her hand to look at it better, her eyes wide with a mix of awe and shock. She shook her head, her voice a whisper. "He didn't." Hana looked at Alex, and their gazes met. He was smiling, a look of profound fondness in his eyes. Without a word, he was telling Hana his true intentions for her. He was hers, and she was his. The silent exchange was broken by Alex's father.

"Okay," Chairman Grant said, "maybe we can talk more about this over dinner tonight. Right now, there are a couple of dozen people waiting to find out if this partnership is happening or not."

Hana's father scoffed, a sense of humor in the sound. He nodded and Alex walked to the doors as everyone returned to their original seats. Then Alex opened the doors and let the entourages back in. The room filled with a renewed buzz of curious whispers.

The Chairman spoke, his voice carrying an air of authority that quieted the room immediately. "Chairman Grant and I have known each other since we both started in our industries. We've had several embarkings that have led to the favor of both our companies becoming what they are today. With excitement, I am pleased to confirm that this will be the largest venture between our two organizations. It will unite our companies as an integral part of each other, although each will remain its own entity."

He then gestured to Alex. "You all know Alex, maybe not directly, but for everything he has done for this project. Today, I have the privilege to inform everyone that he is, in fact, the second son of Chairman Grant. And so, this gives even more strength to this partnership."

"While I know there are rumors that he was fired, he in fact simply stepped down from his position to take his rightful place by Chairman Grant's side. You now also understand why he felt so at ease to take center stage with my only daughter, Hana, last night during her final dance. Their partnership, our partnership, only destiny could have put such grand plans together. Let us sign and forge a new and brighter future for both organizations."

It was a profound, brilliant speech. It immediately gave answers to all the rumors and questions. Alex thought that he couldn't have planned it better.

With the speech concluded, the two chairmen signed and sealed their respective parts of the contracts. Next came Min-jun and Alex's signatures. A collective wave of relief and triumph washed over the room. Handshakes were exchanged, and acknowledgments and congratulations were offered to everyone for their contributions.

Hana stood by the back window, her gaze fixed on Alex. He was gracefully making his way around the room, speaking with various executives, his smile easy and his posture confident. But she knew his true objective was her, and she felt a thrill of anticipation. Their relationship, once a thrilling secret, no longer needed to be hidden. Alex no longer worked for her father's company. Their unofficial blessings had been granted by both sets of parents. They were free.

Hana soon found herself face-to-face with a man she once knew as a hardworking colleague, but now saw as something so much more. He was tall, commanding, and at this moment, looked incredibly handsome. He was looking at her with his piercing blue eyes and that familiar, crooked smirk she loved so much. Alex and Hana both started to reach for each other, their hands hovering in the space between them, when a voice broke their reverie.

It was her brother. "What are you two doing?" he said with a short laugh. "I know you may feel you're in your own bubble, but you're in a conference room with both your parents judging you." He gave another chuckle, shook his head, and walked away, leaving them to their awkward moment.

Hana and Alex came back to their senses and simply moved together, as if a single entity, out of the conference room and into the quiet hallway. It was almost time for the press conference to announce the partnership. Having not been on the main floor for a while, they went to meet their former coworkers.

Kiyo had been sending Hana a dozen messages, her curiosity piqued by the sudden silence and the news that everyone had been asked to leave the room for fifteen minutes. Kiyo was waiting for them when the elevator door opened. Her look was a questioning one, an entire conversation in a single glance.

In response, Alex and Hana locked hands and smiled. He simply stated, "It couldn't have gone better."

Hana, ever the pragmatist, added, "There was no formal approval, though."

Alex simply shrugged his shoulders. "I'll take it informal."

When Alex and Hana stepped through the threshold, flanked by a beaming Kiyo, the typical morning hum, the frantic clicking of keyboards, the low-volume conference calls, the smell of burnt breakroom coffee, stuttered and died. It was a physical reaction, a collective intake of breath that sucked the very air out of the room.

They didn't lead with words. They let their linked hands do the talking. Alex, towering and impeccable in his charcoal-gray Grant-tailored suit, held Hana's hand with a firm, possessive gentleness. Hana, standing tall with the silver heirloom brooch glinting on her lapel, met the gaze of her former colleagues with a newfound clarity.

The confirmation rippled through the office like an electric current. The "Hero Hire" wasn't just a lucky analyst; he was Alex Walther Grant, the second son of the empire they had been trying to court. And Hana wasn't just the Marketing Lead who they all respected; she was the heiress to the very chair their desks sat under.

Their teammates, the engineers, the analysts, and the junior managers who had shared late-night takeout and stressful deadlines with Alex, stood frozen. Some shook their heads in sheer disbelief, while others stared in silent awe at the transformation. The man who had once crawled under desks to fix server cables was now the man who could buy the building.

Alex broke the silence, his voice projecting a calm, resonant authority that filled the sprawling floor.

"I wanted to come back here one last time to look you all in the eye," Alex said, a warm, genuine smile breaking through his professional mask. "As many of you have deduced, the transition is complete. Neither Hana nor I will be continuing in our current roles here. It's time we take our places with our respective families to oversee the partnership we've all worked so hard to build."

A murmur of realization swept through the desks, but Alex raised a hand, his expression softening.

"But I'm not leaving Seoul. In fact, I'm planting roots. My father has appointed me to lead the Grant Group's operations here and across the Asia-Pacific regions. I'll be seeing many of you across the boardroom table very soon."

Hana squeezed his hand, her voice carrying a hopeful, defiant note that reached the back of the room. "And as for me... we'll see what the future holds. But I suspect my days of being told where I belong are officially over."

Kiyo, unable to contain her pride a second longer, chimed in with a wide, mischievous grin. "Don't worry, everyone! I'm not going anywhere! Someone has to stay behind to make sure you all don't burn the place down without our 'Hero' to save you."

The tension finally snapped. The office erupted into a chaotic symphony of chatter, shock, confusion, and bubbling excitement blending into a roar of conversation. People began to step forward, offering hesitant but sincere congratulations, realizing they were witnessing the start of something special.

Hana and Alex navigated the crowd, offering final nods and heartfelt goodbyes to the people who had known them when they were "normal." It was a bittersweet departure, the closing of a chapter that had changed them both forever.

Kiyo walked them to the elevators, her heels clicking a victorious rhythm. As the brushed-steel doors slid open, she stopped, leaning against the frame. She looked at the two of them, the American prince and the Korean princess, and felt a swell of sisterly affection.

"Go enjoy the press conference for me," Kiyo said, her eyes dancing with wit. "Go show the world what happens when the 'Hero' and the 'Heiress' stop playing pretend. I'll be right here, actually working, keeping the seat warm."

Alex and Hana both smiled, nodding in unison as the elevator chimes rang.

"See you on the evening news, Kiyo," Alex said.
