Chapter 28: Beneath the Palace

The old archives beneath Valora Palace were a labyrinth of dimly lit corridors and ancient aether vaults. Dust motes danced in the beams of portable aether lanterns as the circle descended the hidden staircase together. The air was cool and carried the faint scent of aged crystal and preserved documents.

Kyle Valor led the way with a steady lantern, his steps measured. Eliana walked close beside him, her hand occasionally brushing his for reassurance. She had changed into practical yet elegant dark trousers and a fitted blouse, her long black hair tied back, but a few strands still framed her face softly.

Fiona Reine followed with firm determination, her powerful frame moving confidently in dark attire, a small aether pistol holstered at her side for caution. Serena Lux stayed near the middle, her violet eyes wide with a mix of curiosity and nervousness, clutching a portable scanner.

"This section hasn't been accessed in years," Eliana said quietly, her voice echoing slightly off the stone walls. "My husband kept the most sensitive records here — things even the board never saw."

They reached a large reinforced vault door. After Eliana input the old security codes, the door hissed open, revealing rows of floating crystal data orbs and sealed physical files.

Elias Thorn's hologram appeared beside them via a secure portable projector. "The evidence I need is likely in the restricted core vault — Section Seven. Look for anything dated two days before your father's death."

The group split up to search efficiently. Fiona took the security logs, Serena examined the resonance research files, while Eliana and Kyle moved deeper into the restricted section.

In the quiet of Section Seven, surrounded by towering shelves of glowing orbs, Eliana stopped and turned to Kyle. The lantern light cast soft shadows across her face.

"Being down here with you… it feels different," she whispered. "Less like digging up the past and more like building our future." She stepped closer, her hand finding his in the dim light. "Last night changed me, Kyle. Kissing you, being held by you… it made me realize how much I've been holding back."

She leaned in and kissed him gently — a slow, tender kiss filled with the deepening emotions they had been nurturing. Her free hand rested on his chest as she lingered for a moment, savoring the closeness. When she pulled back, her blue eyes were warm and vulnerable.

"I'm not afraid of what we might find here," she murmured. "As long as you're beside me."

They continued searching together. After nearly an hour, Kyle's fingers brushed against a sealed crystal orb tucked behind older files. The date stamp matched exactly.

"I think I found something," he said.

The others gathered quickly. Kyle activated the orb, and a holographic recording materialized.

It showed Kyle's father in this very vault, speaking urgently:

"If you're seeing this, then I'm likely gone. Nexara has developed illegal neural disruption weapons disguised as fashion security tech. I have proof — transaction records, test data, and the names of board members who were bribed. Marcus Hale is one of them. They know I'm about to expose them. If anything happens to me, protect Eliana and the circle she's built. They are the future."

The recording ended abruptly with static.

The vault fell silent.

Eliana's hand tightened around Kyle's, her face pale but her jaw set with determination. "He knew. He was trying to protect us."

Fiona's expression hardened. "Marcus Hale. That bastard has been playing both sides from the beginning."

Serena looked shaken but resolute. "This is the proof we needed. We can use this against Nexara."

Eliana turned to Kyle, her eyes glistening with unshed tears and quiet strength. She stepped into his arms without hesitation, hugging him tightly. Her head rested against his chest as she whispered, "He trusted me to carry on. And now… I have you to help me do it."

Kyle held her close, his hand gently stroking her back. The embrace was warm and grounding, a moment of comfort amid the heavy revelation.

Fiona placed a strong hand on Kyle's shoulder. "We take this evidence carefully. We verify everything before we go public. But this changes the game."

Serena nodded, her voice soft but determined. "We protect each other. The circle stays strong."

As they secured the crystal orb and prepared to leave the archives, Eliana stayed close to Kyle, her hand never leaving his.

Later, back in the main palace as dawn approached, Eliana found a private moment with him in the hallway outside the strategy room.

She pulled him gently into a quiet alcove and kissed him again — deeper this time, filled with gratitude, resolve, and the growing passion she no longer held back. Her body pressed warmly against his for a long moment before she slowly drew away, her forehead resting against his.

"I'm ready to fight for this," she whispered. "For the company. For the circle. For us."

Her blue eyes held his with deep affection.

"Whatever Nexara throws at us next… we face it together. As one."

The palace began to stir with the new day.

The truth about the past had been uncovered.

The evidence against Nexara was now in their hands.

And the bond between Kyle and Eliana — and the entire circle — had grown even stronger in the face of the shadows they were about to confront.

The empire was no longer just rising.

It was preparing to strike back.
