appearance!!!! I hope you are excited for the next season!****
Secrets can't hide in science. Medicine has a way of exposing the lies.
Within the walls of the hospital, the truth is stripped bare.
At the frat house, George is in the bathroom alone, his clothes are all over
the floor as he is reading "Rashes, Hives and Skin Eruptions". And his
healthy skin had turned ashy as he read and reread the likely diagnosis of
what he had. He felt like he wanted to laugh, cry, throw up, and scream all
at the same time.
A thousand thoughts rushed through his head. How was this possible? He
and Olivia had only slept together once, a great night, admittedly, but
now...he got syphilis. He has syphilis.
What is he going to do?
How we keep our secrets outside the hospital...Well, that's a little different.
Izzie tried to open the bathroom door, but it was locked, and she knocked
on it.
"George. You locked the door. I need to take a shower." Izzie complained.
"Uh, uh, I'll be out in a minute." George stuttered out, trying not to
completely freak out.
"What are you doing in there?" Izzie asked curiously.
"It's private." George called back.
Izzie stifled a laugh. Misinterpreting the strain in George's voice as
something else.
"Oh. Oh, God. I'm sorry. I get it. I didn't mean to interrupt." Izzie
apologized starting to laugh at the awkwardness.
"No, it's not that!" George called back, his voice strained and high-pitched,
realizing what Izzie thought he was doing.
"It's ok. Take your time." Izzie said, still laughing.
"I am not doing what you think I'm doing." George said, trying to sound
serious.
"You know what, there's really no need to explain. I'll wait. You
just...finish." Izzie said as she started to head back to her bedroom.
"No, I'm...I'm coming. I'm coming out." George called, quickly cleaning up,
making sure to cover the book with the clothes.
One thing is certain. Whatever it is we're trying to hide, we're never ready
for that moment when the truth gets naked.
Have you ever had a feeling that something was going to happen?
Anticipation that you can't tell whether it is good or bad?
Eddie Sousa had woken up and felt like something big was going to
happen. Or, maybe, she felt off because of her strange dream about her
faceless father and her mother.
As Eddie got farther along in her pregnancy she couldn't help but think
about her parents. About how she was going to be better than her father who
according to her mother, had cheated on his wife with her and left her to
raise Eddie alone because he didn't want to leave his wife and kids for her.
Or the fact that her mother "raised" her. Well, if raising her counted as
leaving her with a very sweet, kind, nanny or her grandmother (before her
illness truly got bad) to have her own new family without her, only
spending time with her when appearances were absolutely necessary and
not spending any time with her all the other times.
She was going to be a good mother for her baby. She was going to love her
peanut no matter what, and while it wasn't the most ideal way or time to
have a baby, she loved peanut from the moment she found out about him or
her and she was going to make sure peanut was going to be loved and know
it is loved, surrounded by people who care.
Maybe, there was also the underlying fear that she was going to be doing
this alone. Sure, she'll have her intern family and the friends she made at the
hospital, but she like her mother, didn't have a father figure for her baby.
Peanut's father was a one night stand, and they never exchanged anything
other than first names. She knew from their flirting and conversations he
was from New York City, but that didn't mean he lived in New York City.
All she knew was that she would never marry anyone like Step-Stan. If she
ever gets married, her new man will have to love and want to be in Peanut's
life as much as her own. She would never want peanut to feel the way she
did.
She tried to shake off this big wight that seemed to be weighing her down,
and got ready for work.
"Hey dad," Conrad Quinn said when he answered his phone as he moved
around his apartment getting ready for the day at the hospital.
"Conrad! How are you?" Dr. Henry Quinn asked joyfully.
"I am good, how are you?" Conrad asked as he threw his bag over his
shoulder.
"I'm good. I'm good. I just spent some time with Daniel, Katie, and the
kids" Henry said with a grin.
"And you always enjoy seeing the kids, how are they?" Conrad asked,
smiling at the thought of his three nieces and two nephews whom he, his
brothers, and their father adored. And, they were the only grandchildren and
nieces and nephews they had, since Conrad hadn't found someone he
wanted to spend his life with, and his two other brothers seemed to be
work-a-holics and had more short-term relationships.
Henry Quinn may be a world renowned surgeon and three time winner of
the Harper Avery. But, he was also a devoted husband and father. He had
married the love of his life, Conrad's mother, when he was in medical
school and the two married shortly before he started his surgical residency.
And, it was a happy marriage, sure his parents had the typical couple fights,
but they could never stay angry long at each other and worked together to
make it through.
And, when they had him and his brothers, Alex and Ben, and adopted the
son of their mother's best friend who died giving birth to him, Daniel. Their
family was complete and Alex remembered a pretty normal and happy
childhood. Mom, dad, four boys. The perfect All-American family.
Until he was six and his mother suddenly got sick. Well, cancer. It sucked.
She has caught it early, but it was nasty, and even with chemo she never
quite recovered and died less than a year and a half later.
And, even after her death, and his high demand career, he always was
hands-on with his sons and made sure they knew they were loved. And, in
Conrad's opinion he did a fantastic job. All of his children became doctors
and surgeons, and becoming well respected in their fields. His oldest
brother, Alec, was a neonatal surgeon and an OBGYN who was one of the
best in his field based out in California. His next eldest brother, Benedict
(or Ben as he preferred to be called) was a cardiothoracic surgeon over in
Europe currently, and his youngest eldest brother, Daniel, was an orthopedic
surgeon in Chicago.
He knew his father wasn't a monk after his mother died. He dated, but he
kept any relationships he had away from him and his brothers. He only later
found out, a few years ago, that his father had another child, a daughter,
who was about ten years younger than him. And, the only reason why he
didn't know until then, is because his father didn't even know. He had found
out pure dumb luck, and the child's mother confirmed that she did have his
child, but she believed he never wanted her, and not to try and contact her.
It had shocked him that his dad didn't try and reach out. But it wasn't every
day that you find out you have an older teen daughter. And, it was a lot to
process, but he knew his dad kept tabs on her, wanting to make sure she
was okay, despite the fact he hadn't known how to reach out. Because how
do you reach out to someone who thought you didn't want them all your
life?
"So, I just wanted you to know I'm going to be in your neck of the woods
for the next week. Dr. Ellers of Mercy-West asked me to high-profile
consult on a case he had there. I was wondering if you wanted to meet up
for dinner with your old man."
Conrad smiled.
"Sure. I'd love that. I'm off at eight tonight, if you come in we can get a
drink or late, and then do dinner again sometime that week." Conrad said.
"Sounds fantastic!" Henry agreed. "I'll see you tonight, I love you."
"Love you to dad." Conrad said, before they both hung up the phone.
George exits the bathroom to find Izzie outside the door grinning at him.
"There's no reason to be ashamed. It's normal. Healthy, even." Izzie
informed
"Well I'm not ashamed cause I wasn't doing anything. I don't have to. I have
a girlfriend." George informed his friend.
"An imaginary girlfriend?" Izzie asked him.
"An actual girlfriend." George informed her.
"You know what? It's no big deal. You don't have to lie. I get it. You have
needs." Izzie teased.
Meredith opens her bedroom door that Izzie had been leaning on.
"What is going on out here?" Meredith asked her roommates.
"Nothing." George snapped.
Izzie started to say something, but the look George sent her stopped her.
"Nothing."
"Nothing." George stated.
"He's freaked out cause I caught him playing with little Jimmy and the
twins." Izzie said, as George glared at her.
"I have a girlfriend." George said.
"Ok." Izzie said as George walked down the hallway and slams the door to
his room.
"This sounds like fun out here." Derek commented as he exited the
bedroom.
Derek's phone rings, he looks at it but doesn't answer. In fact a dark look
passes quickly over his face before it became neutral again.
"Aren't you gonna get that? It might be the hospital." Meredith asked.
"It's not. Breakfast?" Derek asked as he was buttoning up his shirt and he
made his way to the kitchen.
That's the problem with secrets. Like misery, they love company.
"You okay, Cristina?" Eddie asked her curly haired friend, noticing that she
looked like crap as she got ready for her shift in the locker room.
"Yeah, I can't shake this flu." Cristina said, not wanting to admit to Eddie
that she was pregnant and had decided to not go through with it. Not
because she thought the younger girl would judge her, but because you
never knew who was listening in the locker room or in this hospital, and she
didn't need it to get around.
"Did you get it checked out?" Eddie asked.
"Yeah, I did. I'm fine, promise. Don't worry too much, girl genius." Cristina
said honestly.
"Okay." Eddie said unsure but let it go for now. "Let's go find Bailey,
hopefully, since we're first we have a chance for the best assignments."
She knew that would make Cristina feel, or at least act, like she was better
at the thought of good cases and the chance to scrub into surgery.
"And, I am suddenly feeling better already." Cristina said as the two made
their way to find Bailey at their usual nurses station.
They pile up and up until they take over everything.
Later that morning, after Cristina got off the phone with the clinic, Burke
approached her, looking concerned at her haggard and sickly appearance.
"I paged you last night." Burke commented.
"Oh, I wasn't on call." Cristina said.
"That's not why I paged you. You could give me your home number." Burke
suggested hopeful at maybe becoming more with Cristina whom he truly
did like, but she almost seemed reluctant.
"Um, Burke...Uh, I gotta go." Cristina said.
She was so grateful that she was saved by the pager.
Until you don't have room for anything else.
Somewhere else in the hospital, on the surgical floor, Chief Webber walks
by rubbing his temple and trying to read the chart with obvious difficulty.
He had been trying to deny the symptoms for the past few weeks, but it
suddenly was becoming worse and he couldn't help but feel a pit of fear and
worry build in him.
Until you're so full of secrets, you feel like you're going to burst.
"I had a really good time the other night." Olivia told George, as the two
stood at the nurses station.
It was somewhat awkward on George's end. Not knowing how to bring up
the fact he had gotten an STD from their night together. How did he go
about saying it? Should he just blurt it out? Or ask her to talk privately? It
was all to weird.
"Yeah, me too. Are you, uh, feeling ok and everything?" George hedged,
trying to gage if she noticed anything.
"I'm good. Great, now that I got to see you." Olivia said honestly, but she
noticed his face. "Why?"
"Oh, no reason. I'm good too, you know? Really good. You know. But, um,
a little itchy." George rambled.
Before he could say anything else, Izzie walks up to the two of them.
"Hi, George." Izzie said as she looked between the two with a smile.
"Hey." George greeted.
"Olivia." Izzie greeted neutral. It wasn't a secret that Izzie seemed to have a
problem with Olivia. No one knew why though.
"Hi, Dr. Stevens." Olivia said kindly, acting completely professional. She
then turned to George and said; "I'll see you later."
"Ok. Bye. Yeah. She's into me." George informed Izzie.
"Way to go, George. She's cute. So this morning you really weren't..." Izzie
asked awkwardly, realizing he wasn't going solo in the bathroom.
"Anytime you want to apologize..." George suggested to his friend and
roommate.
"Then what were you doing in the bathroom for so long?" Izzie asked
George curiously.
"I have to go." George said, not wanting to answer that question and all but
ran to anywhere besides there.
A few minutes later, George enters the locker room where Alex is trimming
his nose hairs in the mirror. He checks around to see if anyone else is in
there.
"Um..." George said awkwardly.
"I know I'm pretty to look at and all, George, but back up." Alex joked
when he noticed the male intern looking as if he was about ready to jump
out of his skin.
"I need to ask you something." George said, when he made sure they were
the only two interns in the locker room.
"I'm waiting." Alex said, after a moment of silence.
"I seem to be having this skin thing going on, like a rash, really. And I think
I know what it is, but I can't get close enough to tell for sure." George said,
he knew it was syphilis, but he was hoping he was wrong and he was just
crazy. But, deep down he knew he had diagonised himself correctly.
"Let's see it." Alex said.
"It's kinda located in an, um, you know, private..." George said, suddenly
realizing what he was asking Alex to do.
"You're a doctor, George. It's called a penis. You have a rash on your
penis?" Alex asked the other intern.
"I think I can describe it. Um, it's k...red." George explained.
"Look, just come on. Just show me your junk so we can get this over with."
Alex told George, suddenly serious and in doctor mode.
George looks around again and then slowly unties and opens his scrubs.
Alex looks and makes a grimacing face.
"So?" George asked, worriedly.
"Dude, you've got syphilis." Alex said seriously, and somewhat shocked,
before he leaves the room, leaving George alone.
Dr. Burke had pulled Alex, George, and Eddie to help him with a patient
that had been admitted with abdominal pain. And, even though this wasn't
Burke's specialty, it turned out he was doing it as a favor, because the man
was one of his closest friends, Bill Adams.
"Patient presented with abdominal pain and blood in his urine. Once his
workup come back unrevealing, the urologist suggested a cystoscopy." Alex
presented to Dr. Burke.
"Reason?" Dr. Burke asked the interns.
"To get a look inside the bladder." Eddie answered the doctor promptly, and
Dr. Burke nodded at her pleased.
"I appreciate you doing this, Preston. I know this is a little out of your
field." Bill said sincerely.
"That's not a problem. It gives my interns something to do." Burke
informed his friend.
"I have a feeling you keep them plenty busy. We were in the same frat at
Tulane. It's gone from torturing pledges to torturing interns. Am I right?"
Bill asked looking at the interns with a knowing and charming smile.
"Be very careful how you two answer that." Burke informed his interns.
None of them said anything. While Eddie didn't like Burke as much as she
did Shepherd or Quinn. But, she respected the fact that the man was a
brilliant surgeon and once you got past the cold exterior, he was a good
teacher.
"I could tell some stories." Bill told the interns with a smile.
"Bill, you have a camera snaking up your mojo. It's not the time to cross
me." Burke reminded his best friend amused.
"It isn't anything too serious?" Bill's wife asked, as she gently ran her hand
over Bill's head.
"That's what this procedure will tell us. You don't worry about anything but
growing my godson in there." Burke said with a smile, as the woman
smiled as well.
"He kicks like you wouldn't believe." Bill's wife said.
"A badass, just like his father." Burke said.
His wife smiled, though, it looked somewhat strained, and she turned to
look at Eddie, more specifically her stomach.
"Have you felt kicks yet Dr. Sousa?" Bill's wife asked, trying to think about
anything other than what could be wrong with her husband.
"Oh yes, all the time, though it is more like fluttering at the moment. My
baby seems to like to remind me it's there all the time, especially when I'm
trying to sleep. I think I should put this kid in either dance, soccer, or kick
boxing or something." Eddie said with a grin, which the other woman
smiled.
"Do you know if it is a boy or girl?" She asked.
Eddie shook her head no. "No, I decided I wanted to be surprised. But, I
have a gut feeling it'll be a girl."
Before Bill's wife could ask anything else, Burke barked an order to
George. "Move a little to the right. Your other right. There."
"What do you see? What is it?" Bill asked concerned at what Burke and the
interns had found.
"Could be any number of things. O'Malley, take a biopsy of the mass.
Doctors Karev and Sousa, schedule a CT." Burke ordered the interns. Then
he turned to Bill and his wife. "Let's not worry until we have to."
A little while later, Bill is getting his CT. While George and Alex are in the
scanning room. Eddie had just left, having to go to the bathroom.
"I gotta say, George, I didn't think you had it in you. It's always the quiet
ones. So who's the woman?" Alex asked curiously.
"None of your business." George informed him.
"Oh, come on. Who gave you the cooties on the playground?" Alex asked
interested.
"You must have had something like this before, right?" George asked the
other man.
"I never talk about my penis with other men." Alex informed him, the tech
gives both doctors a look.
"I don't n... either, normally." George said awkwardly, but was saved from
trying to explain himself more when the results of the CT came up.
"We better get Burke." George said as Alex nodded in agreement.
Burke is reviewing Bill's scan images while Alex and George waited for
Eddie to return with the results.
"There's definitely a growth, protruding into the bladder, but look at the
edges. I don't think it's a tumor." Burke said.
"Kind of shaped like an ovary." Alex commented as he looked at the scans.
"That the flip answer you're gonna give your patient, Dr. Karev? This is one
of my oldest friends. You might want to take this seriously." Burke said,
annoyed with the intern, sending him a look that clearly was meant to burn
holes in his head.
"I'm sorry, sir." Alex apologized.
"You better be." Burke said.
"I got the rest of the labs back. They did a chromosome analysis of the
tissue. You won't believe this." Eddie said as she entered the room, and
handed the results to the attending. She pointed the important information.
"Right there."
Burke looks at the lad results and his eyes widened in shock.
"Bill has an ovary?" Burke asked in complete shock.
Bill and Burke smile at each other through the glass. Bill had no idea what
the doctors had found out, and Burke had no idea how his best friend would
feel about this.
At lunch, George is walking through the outdoor picnic area with Alex
making their way to their usual table, where Eddie, Cristina, and Izzie were
already sitting at.
"Do you think she's talking about me?" George asked the other man, as they
walked past Olivia's table.
"She's absolutely talking about you. Dude, that's a good thing." Alex tried to
reassure George, though it didn't look like it was working.
"No, no it's not." George denied.
"Georgie, get a clue. Syphilis is the best thing that ever happened to you. In
their eyes, you're a player." Alex informed the boy, trying to impart some of
his "wisdom".
When they sat down at the table, Cristina brushed Izzie's hand away from
the forehead.
"Hey, syph-boy." Cristina greeted.
George turned to look at Izzie with shock and annoyance. Really, did she
have to tell Cristina? He wanted her to keep it quiet.
"You told her?" George asked, hurt and annoyed.
"Just Cristina...and Eddie." Izzie admitted sheepishly.
""Syph-boy." It's got a nice ring to it, it's kinda like Superboy, only
diseased." Alex teased.
"Izzie didn't have to say a word to us. Around here, the only thing that
spreads faster than disease is gossip." Cristina informed the younger male.
"That's not true. Just cause Izzie can't keep her mouth shut doesn't mean
everyone knows." George informed Cristina as Meredith joined them.
"Hey, George. How are you feeling? Sorry about the syphilis." Meredith
said to her roommate as she sat next to Eddie.
"Everyone in this hospital knows?" George asked panicked.
"I am sorry, Georgie." Eddie said sincerely. She hadn't spread it around, and
felt like medical issues like this shouldn't be spread around. It was personal,
not gossip fodder.
"Knows you're a player." Alex told George.
"You're disturbed." Eddie informed the older male. "Completely and utterly
disturbed."
"True. Everybody's got a secret. Just be glad yours is out in the open." Alex
told the man with a shrug.
"Oh, yeah, Alex? What's yours?" Cristina challenged the man.
"You show me yours, and I'll show you mine." Alex volleyed back.
Cristina looks at Burke as he walks by.
"I bet you've got some seriously kinky skeletons in your closet." Alex
commented with a smirk towards Cristina.
"What's in my closet is none of your business." Cristina told Alex.
"Well, I don't have any secrets. My life is boring." Izzie said taking a sip of
her water.
"Everybody's got something to hide." Meredith said. Eddie sent her an
understanding look, knowing Meredith was carrying a very heavy secret
about her mother.
Inside one of the empty hospital examination rooms, Alex is giving George
shots of penicillin.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" George asked, concerned.
"It's a shot of penicillin, George. Be grateful I'm even doing this. I've
already seen more of you than I ever wanted to. I'll be fighting nightmares
for a week." Alex informed him.
"Okay, you know what? Forget this." George said, attempting to leave, but
Alex stopped him.
"Do you want to get rid of the syph or not? Just shut up and drop 'em." Alex
ordered.
George sighed, and somewhat reluctantly pulls down his pants and bends
over the gurney.
"I cannot believe this." George muttered darkly.
Just then, Meredith and Eddie enter through the privacy curtain, both
wanting to keep George company.
"Eddie, Meredith, go away!" George ordered.
"Hi, George. We thought you could use some moral support." Eddie greeted
with a charming, innocent smile.
"NO! No, moral support. I'm indisposed here." George said, while the girls
ignored him. Eddie popped up onto the gurney next to George.
"George, it's not a big deal. And you have a cute butt." Meredith informed
her roommate, as Eddie leaned back slightly to look at his butt as well.
"oh it is!" Eddie agreed with a bright smile.
"I have a cute butt too. You want to see?" Alex asked the two girls.
"No, I haven't thrown up since my morning sickness stopped. I'd rather not
again." Eddie said with a sweet smile on her face, as Alex let out a laugh.
"Oh, get out. You're doing it wrong." Meredith ordered as she took the
needle from Alex.
"Be my guest." Alex said as he made his way to move.
"What...? Alex. Alex. Wha...?" George stuttered out, trying to see what was
going on.
As Alex left, Izzie entered, not even batting an eye at the fact he was bent
over, pants down, with his butt showing.
"Hey!"
"What are we doing here?" Izzie asked interested and joined Meredith.
"Breaking George's spirit." George said, referring to himself in third person.
"Curing George's syph." Eddie said swinging her legs back and forth gently
as Meredith readied the shot.
"I don't like needles." George informed his roommate and friend.
" Good thing you became a doctor." Meredith informed the man. "Other
side."
"Izzie?" Cristina yelled from the other side.
"Yeah?" Izzie asked loudly.
"Uh, Mr. Franklin's procedure's been scheduled for after lunch..." Cristina
said as she entered the room.
"Oh, what are we doing?" Cristina asked when she looked at the scene in
front of her.
"We are saving George from a future of festering sores and insanity." Eddie
informed her friend.
"Oh, cute butt." Cristina commented as she stood next to Eddie, on the other
side of Meredith.
"Told ya." Meredith and Eddie said together, as George sent Eddie a 'really'
look.
"It is cute, like a baby's." Izzie informed George.
"You know, I have spent hours, days, years, imagining myself half-naked in
a room with four women. The reality is so much better." George said
sarcastically, wishing that the floor would somehow open up and swallow
him whole.
After the penicillin shot was administered, George leaves, and the four girls
share an amused look.
"I think he's gonna cry." Cristina informed them, as they all laughed.
After learning about the outbreak of syphilius, Dr. Webber called all the
doctors (attendings, residents, and interns) and nurses into a conference
room. He was looking at them sternly with his secretary, Patricia sat next to
him.
"Three interns, four residents and six nurses on this surgical floor have been
diagnosed with...syphilis." Webber said, stopping when the room makes
oohing noises like they were in high school, and someone had gotten in
trouble.
Eddie, standing next to Cristina and Meredith, looked at the boy sitting in
front of her.
"There are over 70,000 new cases every year." Patricia informed the
doctors.
Eddie noticed Olivia's quick look over at George from across the room.
"Undiagnosed, syphilis can lead to blindness, insanity and death." Patricia
explained the symptoms and side effects of the STD.
"If you are having unprotected sex with another member of the staff, get
tested." Webber ordered his staff sternly.
Eddie looked around the room and noticed Burke looking at Cristina across
the room. She quirked her eyebrow and wondered what that was about.
"This is not a request." Webber told his staff.
Everyone laughs.
"Patricia will now give you a safe-sex demonstration." Richard said as the
snickers continued. Reminding everyone of high school sex-ed classes.
Eddie sighed and buried her head slightly into Cristina's shoulder and had
horrible flashbacks to when she was younger and in high school and had to
learn about sex earlier than other kids her age, because she had to take sexed.
"Ugh this is worse than high school." Eddie informed the Asian girl.
"Well, it obviously didn't stick." Cristina joked motioning to Eddie's
obvious bump that seemed to be growing daily.
"Shut up bitch." Eddie whispered teasingly and both girls laughed.
Patricia stands up holding a condom and a banana. Oh god. This was going
to be way worse than high school. Way worse.
"When the time is right, and, gentlemen, you'll all know when that time is,
carefully open the condom packet and roll it onto the banana." Patricia said
as she showed them how to correctly apply a condom.
Derek enters quietly, and no one seemed to be paying attention to her.
"We should try and get down to do the MRI now." Derek whispered to him.
"This isn't really a good time." Richard whispered back.
"If you want to do this without anybody else knowing, you should do it
now." Derek whispers back, which made Richard agree, seeing his
reasoning.
"Open communication is essential to a healthy relationship. In a responsible
relationship..." Patricia continued.
"Poor George." Eddie said sympathetically looking at George.
"Yeah. You know, I think he really likes Typhoid Mary." Cristina agreed
with the pregnant, blonde girl.
"Well, not many budding relationships survive a good dose of VD."
Meredith told them, both girls knew that it was true.
"Yeah." The other two girls agreed.
"When the banana is finished..." Patricia said.
"Yeah." Meredith said.
"...gently peel off the condom and dispose of it properly. With every fresh
banana, always use a fresh condom." Patricia continued.
Eddie, George, and Alex had been allowed to scrub in on Bill's surgery
alongside Dr. Knox and Dr. Burke.
"That's the last of the ovarian material. I just need to sew up the perforation
on the bladder wall." Dr. Knox said as she looked at Burke. "Uh..." as she
shook her head.
"Is there a problem, Dr. Knox?" Burke asked the other doctor, concerned
that there was something else, that had been shown on the MRI.
"Well, you said this man's wife is pregnant?" Dr. Knox asked the attending.
"Due in five weeks. Why?" Burke asked Dr. Knox.
"Our patient has a blind vas deferens." Dr. Knox informed him.
"Bill is sterile?" Burke asked shocked. He and Bill were close, and they
were basically brothers, and told each other everything. He would have
thought Bill would have told him something like this.
"And always has been." Dr. Knox confirmed.
"Then who got his wife pregnant?" Eddie asked the room at large. It was
awkward as they all looked at each other.
"Oh!" George said, realizing what Eddie was referring to.
"Sucks to be Bill right now." Alex commented, as Eddie nodded.
After the surgery, where they found out that Dr. Burke's friend was sterile.
Izzie, Eddie, Cristina and Meredith were in the tunnels and were sitting on
some unused beds.
"You guys want to perform an unauthorized autopsy?" Eddie asked shocked
at what Izzie and Cristina told the other two girls.
"I know you, Cristina. You do not want to be known as the new 007. An
autopsy clears your name." Izzie said.
"Cristina, no." Meredith argued.
"What about Franklin's wife? You saw the way she was looking at me. She
wants the autopsy. She just didn't want to fight with her daughter. She
looked so sad."
"Isobel Stevens," Eddie said, sounding very much like a mother or their
resident. "you cannot do an unauthorized autopsy based on a look . I mean,
what are you going to say 'my patient's wife gave me consent through a
stare?' You'd be laughed out of a license ."
"Ok, Cristina Yang, license to kill." Izzie tried to convince her.
"Ok, I'm in." Cristina said.
"I am so not involved in this." Meredith informed the two conspiring
interns.
"Same here." Eddie agreed.
"Eddie, Meredith, this is Fight Club. Nobody talks about it." Cristina told
her two best friends.
"Fine." Meredith relented, and with a slight nudge, Eddie reluctantly agreed
as well.
"We have to do it when Bailey's not around." Cristina said to them.
"Bailey's always around. She's everywhere and knows everything." The
former model reminded her.
"Well, she is all knowing." Eddie agreed. "Like god."
"Well, we have to take our chances." Cristina said.
"Bailey's got something tonight from 7 to 11. You two will be the last thing
she's worried about." Meredith informed the two.
The three other interns looked at Meredith in shock.
"How do you know that?" Cristina asked the blonde.
"What kind of something?" Izzie asked.
"Oh, I can't tell you that. It's Fight Club too. Ed, come with me." Meredith
said.
"What for?" Eddie asked confused.
"You're part of my fight club, I'll tell you along the way." Meredith said as
Eddie grinned, getting up with Meredith's help and they made their way off
to their top secret fight club.
"If I'm missing out on a real patient because of this, they're gonna call me
007 because I've killed you." Cristina muttered to Izzie watching them go.
Apparently, Meredith's fight club, was the fact that the chief had a tumor on
the optic nerve and Derek and Bailey were going to be the ones working on
the surgery. While Eddie was to be standing watch and making sure no one
was to enter. Apparently, she had started to gain a reputation like Bailey's
that made people think twice before crossing her.
Derek enters the OR, the door has signs that read Do Not Enter-Closed For
Maintenance. Richard is inside prepping for his surgery.
"How we doing?" Shepherd asked.
"Did you lock up the gallery?" Webber asked him.
"Don't worry. We're flying under the radar. What did you put out there, the
Midas Rex?" Derek told him.
"We've got it, chief." Bailey promised.
"How much cancomycin is there?" Webber asked.
"One gram, as ordered, sir." Bailey informed him.
"You're not gonna be too liberal with those benzos, are ya?" Webber asked
him.
"You know, doctors make the worst patients. You should just breathe in the
happy gas. Stop running my OR. I got you covered." Derek said.
As they started, Eddie slipped out to make sure that no one entered.
Eddie was reading through an article as she was waiting for the surgery to
be done. She was able to watch it through the scrub room window.
"Oh god, you scared me. How did it go?" Eddie asked when she looked
over at her resident.
"We'll only know when he wakes up." Bailey informed her.
Eddie nodded.
"Sousa, do you know where Stevens and Yang are?" Bailey asked her
pregnant intern.
"Hmm...I think they are checking post ops. Why?" Eddie lied convincingly,
keeping her face straight.
Bailey looked at her for a long moment. She knew.
"See, Grey," Bailey said to the other blonde intern entered the scrub room.
"if you're going to lie. Do it convincingly. Both of you take turns watching
the chief."
Both interns nodded, as they prayed she wouldn't kill Izzie and Cristina.
"What did you tell her?" Eddie asked her friend.
"Nothing...apparently I can't lie." Meredith said.
"We should page them." Eddie said, as Meredith nodded in agreement.
Cristina and Izzie are performing the autopsy, having not heard their pagers,
they had no idea Bailey was going to be storming in to find them redhanded.
"Don't even tell me you're doing what I think you're doing!" Bailey yelled.
"Um..."
"Not only did you disregard the family's wishes, you broke the law! You
could be arrested for assault! Do you like jail? The hospital could be sued! I
could lose my license, my job! I like my job! Did you think about any of
this before you started cutting open a poor man's body? I could seriously
kick both of your asses right now. Do you have anything to say?" Bailey
ranted loudly.
Izzie picks up Mr. Franklin's heart from the scales to show her resident.
"Look at his heart." Izzie informed her.
"It's huge!" Bailey stopped her rant, looking very interested now.
"It's over 600 grams, and there's some kind of grainy material in it." Izzie
informed her.
"We want to run some tests." Cristina said.
"Oh, now you want to run tests?" Bailey said, exasperated.
"At this point, what could it hurt?" Cristina asked her.
"I hate both of you right now." Bailey snapped.
It was Meredith's turn to watch Richard. She had stepped out of the room
for a moment to take a call from the nursing home. After she was done
talking to them and Derek, Meredith enters Richard's room to check on him,
again.
"Meredith? He's an attending. You're an intern." Was the first thing Webber
said when the door closed.
"You saw us? You can see." Meredith said.
"I'm gonna tell you what your mother would say if she were here. You're
making a mistake, a big one." Webber told her.
"And I would tell my mother it's not a mistake." Meredith told him.
Eddie Sousa was making her way out of the hospital when she accidentally
bumped into someone.
"Oh I am so sorry." An older male voice said, as he steadied her.
"Oh, I am sorry, it was my fault. I wasn't paying attention." Eddie
apologized as she looked up and saw a handsome older man that looked
very familiar.
She didn't even register the look of shock on the man's face when he looked
at her. As, if he hadn't expected to see her standing there in front of him.
"No, it was mine. Are you okay?" The man asked looking concerned at the
pregnant woman.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine...oh my god, you're Henry Quinn." Eddie said, realizing
who them man was.
"Yes." He said with a chuckle. "I am guessing you're a doctor here?"
"Yes! I'm a surgical intern." Eddie said with a nod. "I'm Eddie Sousa."
"It's nice to meet you Eddie." Henry said.
"You as well." Eddie said. "Are you in Seattle for business or pleasure?"
"Both." Henry said, "I am consulting on a case at Mercy West, and I
thought I'd spend some time with my son."
"Well, then I'll let you go..." Eddie started as Conrad joined them.
"Hey dad." Conrad said as he saw his dad, and nodded to Eddie in greeting.
"Eddie."
"Hey Dr. Qu...Conrad!" Eddie said with a smile remembering after crying
all over him he told her, she deserved to call him his first name.
"I see you've met my dad." Conrad said as he nodded to his father.
"Yes, we bumped into each other." Eddie said with a smile.
"I'll let the two of you go. It was nice to meet you." Eddie said.
"You too Edit."
Eddie and Conrad shared a look. Henry knew her full name, a name that she
didn't introduce herself as, and most people, okay, everyone assumed her
name was either some form of Theodora or Edwina, Edit was not a common
name at all. According to her mother Eddie had been named after her
father's mom who he adored, who was from Hungary. But, Eddie didn't
know how true that story was.
"How did you know my name?" Eddie asked before she could think or have
her head caught up with her.
You remember that feeling Eddie mentioned earlier.
It was back and in full force.
The thing people forget is how good it can feel when you finally set secrets
free. Whether good or bad, at least they're out in the open, like it or not.
Olivia enters the intern locker room where George is sitting on the bench.
"Um, about before..." George started to apologize.
"George, I want you to understand, when we started dating, I was already
kind of seeing someone. I didn't know how much I'd like you, and when I
realized, I broke it off with the other guy..." Olivia apologized feeling
horrible about how she reacted.
"Other guy? Who's the other guy?" George asked.
Olivia looks up and George turns around to see Alex standing there.
George was going to KILL Alex.
"You and Alex? You and Alex?!" George yelled, getting the attention of the
other interns. Screaming at Alex as he attacks him, "You gave me
syphilis?!"
"George! George! George! George, back off!" Olivia, Meredith, Izzie, and
Cristina yelled trying to stop the fight.
They were finally able to pull George off of Alex.
"Alex!" Meredith cried, pushing him away.
"George!" Cristina said, pulling George out of the intern locker room.
"Back off, Alex." Izzie told the man who gave her friend syph.
Meredith trailed after George and Cristina, but instead heads to the lobby
where she was meeting Derek. When she entered the lobby where Derek is
waiting for her
And once your secrets are out in the open, you don't have to hide behind
them anymore.
"Long day." Derek said tiredly.
"Yeah." Meredith commented in agreement.
"Somewhere out this is a steak with your name on it and maybe a bottle of
wine." Derek offered her with his typical, charming, McDreamy grin.
"This is why I keep you around." Meredith said with a smile.
"So we need to talk." Derek started.
"Wine first, talk later." Meredith said, needing the wine.
"You trying to, uh, get me drunk so you can take advantage of me?" Teased
Derek.
"I think I like this rules thing." Meredith stated with a grin.
"Me too." Derek said as he helps her fix her coat and they turn to leave. A
stunning red headed woman is standing there and Derek is wide eyed.
"Meredith, I am so sorry." Derek said as he looked at his girlfriend, who
looked very confused.
The problem with secrets is even when you think you're in control...
The stunning red headed woman walks over to them.
"Addison." Derek said barely controlling his hostility towards the woman.
Meredith looked lost and confused. She had never heard Derek use that tone
of voice before. His eyes looked like they could kill this woman, and
wanted to kill her. Who was this woman and how did Derek know her?
...you're not.
"What are you doing here?" Derek asked Addison.
"Well, you'd know if you'd bothered to return any one of my phone calls."
Addison informed her husband, slightly condescendingly towards the
dreamy man.
"Hi. I'm Addison Shepherd." Addison said, realizing then that the younger
blonde woman had no idea who she was or that she existed by the fact she
looked at her with shocked, wide, eyes.
They shake hands, even though Meredith is extremely confused, but the last
name, Shepherd ran through her head.
"Shepherd?" Meredith asked as she looked between her boyfriend and the
stunning redhead.
"And you must be the woman who's been screwing my husband." Addison
dropped that atomic bomb on the young blonde with the point of her
beautifully manicured finger nail tipped finger.
Everything in that moment seemed to crash around her. Meredith looks at
Addison and then at Derek. Unsure what to do or say.
