Chapter 5 — First Dawn
---
Scene 1 — 3:30 AM. The Dorms. Leo and Kenny's Room.
The darkness was still thick when Leo opened his eyes.
No alarm had rung. No bed had shaken. No sound had been made. But he was awake, as if his body had known before his mind that it was time.
He sat on the edge of his bed. Looked at Kenny.
Kenny was sleeping on his stomach, his arms dangling off the side of the bed, his mouth slightly open, his blue hair sticking up in every direction. He was snoring. Quietly. But he was snoring.
Leo (muttering): "Kenny."
No response.
Leo (a little louder): "Kenny."
No response. The snoring paused for a moment, then resumed.
Leo (getting out of bed, walking over, shaking his shoulder): "Kenny. Dawn."
Kenny (without opening his eyes): "...The camel."
Leo: "What?"
Kenny (still asleep): "The camel... told me... physics... is hard..."
Leo: "Kenny, wake up. We're going to be late."
Kenny (opening his eyes suddenly): "Dawn?!"
Leo: "Dawn."
Kenny (sitting up quickly, his head hitting Leo's bed frame): "Ow!"
Leo (stepping back): "Calm down."
Kenny (holding his head, whispering): "I am calm. I'm like the wind. Like—"
Leo: "Kenny."
Kenny: "Yes?"
Leo: "Don't shout."
Kenny (whispering): "I'm not shouting. I'm breathing enthusiastically."
They both looked at the other bed where Alex was sleeping on his side, his glasses on the table beside him, his face peaceful, his breathing steady. He was asleep. Or at least, he appeared to be.
Kenny (whispering): "Is he asleep?"
Leo (whispering): "He looks like it."
Kenny: "And Hashiro?"
They both looked at the bed in the far corner. Hashiro wasn't there. The blanket was neat, the pillow in place, but the bed was empty.
Kenny (whispering): "Where is he?"
Leo (whispering): "I don't know."
Kenny: "Did he sleep in the closet?"
Leo: "Kenny."
Kenny: "Did he sleep under the bed?"
Leo: "Kenny."
Kenny: "Did he sleep in—"
Leo (putting his hand over Kenny's mouth): "I'm leaving now. With you or without you."
Kenny (muffled behind Leo's hand): "With you. With you."
They moved quietly toward the door. Leo opened it slowly. A faint creak. They paused. Waited. No sound. They slipped out into the hallway.
In the bedroom, Alex opened his eyes. He looked at the closed door. Then closed them again. He didn't smile. But he wasn't angry.
On the rooftop, Hashiro sat on the edge. He wasn't asleep. He wasn't awake. He was there. Looking at the sky. The sky was still dark. Dawn hadn't come yet. But he was there. Waiting. As always.
---
Scene 2 — 4:00 AM. Outside the Dorms. The Path to the Training Ground.
The sky was still dark. The streets were nearly empty. The air was cold.
Kenny (walking beside Leo, yawning): "I don't understand why dawn. Why not noon? Why not afternoon? Why not—"
Leo: "Because dawn is quiet."
Kenny: "Quiet is boring."
Leo: "Quiet hides things."
Kenny (looking at him): "That's deep. Who said that?"
Leo: "I did."
Kenny: "You're deep today."
Leo: "I didn't sleep well."
Kenny: "Me neither. I dreamed about the camel again."
Leo (sighing): "Kenny."
Kenny: "This time the camel was wearing glasses. Glasses like Alex's. And he said: 'Quantum physics requires focus, Mr. Carlos. You don't focus.'"
Leo: "And did you focus?"
Kenny: "I tried. But the camel looked so much like Alex that I got scared."
Leo (smiling despite himself): "You got scared of a camel?"
Kenny: "I got scared of Alex. The camel was friendly."
They reached the training ground: a back lot behind the old buildings. It wasn't large. But it was enough. And Iruki was there. Standing in the middle, as if he'd never left yesterday. His simple gray clothes, his unchanging posture.
Iruki (looking at them): "You're the first."
Kenny (looking around): "Tara? Jenny?"
Iruki: "They haven't arrived yet."
Kenny (smiling): "I beat Jenny. This won't happen again."
Leo: "Where are we training?"
Iruki (gesturing to the ground): "Here."
Kenny: "Here? This is just empty ground."
Iruki: "It's enough."
Silence. Then they heard quick footsteps. Tara arrived. She was breathing hard, her blonde hair falling over her shoulders, her cheeks flushed from the cold or from running.
Tara: "Sorry... am I too late?"
Iruki: "You're second."
Kenny (shocked): "Second? I was first, Leo was first, you're second, and Jenny..."
Jenny (appearing suddenly behind them): "I'm here."
Kenny (jumping): "Where did you come from?!"
Jenny (walking past him): "From home. I was waiting for my mom to wake up."
Kenny: "Why?"
Jenny: "To reassure her. She said dawn was dangerous. I told her dawn was quiet. She told me quiet hides things."
She looked at Leo. Leo looked at her.
Leo: "That's..."
Jenny: "Coincidence."
Iruki (quietly): "Everyone's here."
The four stood before him. The sky was beginning to lighten, faint light appearing on the horizon.
Iruki: "From today, you'll train every dawn. Before your classes. You'll return to your dorms, sleep a little, then go to your lectures. That's your schedule. Don't be late."
Kenny: "What if we are late?"
Iruki (looking at him): "You won't be."
He didn't threaten. He didn't shout. He said it like it was a fact.
Iruki: "Run."
Kenny: "Now?"
Iruki: "Now."
They ran.
---
Scene 3 — 5:30 AM. The Training Ground.
Running was harder than they expected.
Kenny (panting): "How... how far did we run?"
Iruki: "Don't ask. Run."
Jenny (running beside him, breathing less heavily): "If you focused on running instead of asking, you'd run farther."
Kenny: "I am focusing! I'm running and thinking!"
Leo (ahead, voice steady): "Think after running."
Tara (behind, panting but continuing): "We've... been here before... haven't we?"
Iruki (walking beside them, not running): "You've been here. You haven't reached your limit yet."
Kenny (stopping suddenly): "My limit is here."
Iruki (looking at him): "Your limit begins when you think it's over."
Kenny: "That's a nice saying. But my lungs disagree."
Jenny (hitting his shoulder): "Run."
Kenny (running again): "I hate dawn. I hate running. I hate—"
Leo (from ahead): "Kenny."
Kenny: "Yes?"
Leo: "Run."
He ran.
After running came jumping. After jumping came controlling their powers. And here, the chaos began.
Iruki: "Show me your power."
Kenny (raising his hands): "Water. Simple. Easy."
He tried to form water. A light spray came out.
Kenny: "That was... a warm-up."
Iruki: "Again."
He tried again. More spray.
Kenny (laughing nervously): "Water is stingy today."
Jenny (stepping forward): "Let me."
She lit a flame in her hand. Small. Modest. But it was fire.
Kenny: "That's it?"
Jenny (looking at him): "That's it."
Iruki: "Again."
The flame grew slightly. Not large. But stronger than it had been days ago.
Tara (stepping forward, a little nervous): "I'll try."
She raised her staff. Ice formed. A small piece, clear, fragile.
Kenny: "Beautiful."
Tara (blushing): "Thank you."
Iruki: "Leo."
Leo stepped forward. He raised his hands. Nothing. He focused. Nothing. He took a deep breath. Then a faint green light appeared at his fingertips.
Kenny (watching in awe): "That's..."
Leo (looking at his hands): "Small."
Iruki: "Small. But it's there."
Kenny: "Mine was spray."
Jenny: "Mine was a small flame."
Tara: "Mine was fragile ice."
Leo: "Mine was weak lightning."
They looked at each other.
Iruki (quietly): "It grows."
---
Scene 4 — 6:15 AM. Returning to the Dorms.
They returned panting. No one spoke. They didn't have the energy. They reached the door. Leo opened it slowly. They entered quietly.
Alex was asleep in his bed. Or at least, he appeared to be. Hashiro wasn't there. Or maybe he was. No one knew.
Kenny (collapsing onto his bed): "I'm sleeping. Don't wake me. Not even if the camel comes."
Leo (sitting on his bed, not sleeping): "I won't sleep."
Kenny: "You'll sleep."
Leo: "I won't sleep."
Leo fell asleep three minutes later.
---
Scene 5 — 9:30 AM. Campus. After Lectures.
Kenny (walking beside Leo): "I didn't sleep well."
Leo: "You slept two hours."
Kenny: "Two and a half."
Jenny (from behind): "I slept one hour."
Tara (beside Jenny): "I didn't sleep. I rearranged my room."
Kenny: "Why?"
Tara: "Because I was nervous."
Kenny: "About training?"
Tara: "About dawn."
They walked in silence for a moment. The sun was high. The sky was blue. The day was long.
---
Scene 6 — 7:00 PM. Tara's Room.
Tara sat on her bed. She was tired. But she didn't sleep.
She looked at her sketchbook on the table. Opened it. The last page was empty. She picked up her pencil and began to draw.
Not the ice wall she had created. Not the staff she had held. She drew the dawn. The first light. Rising over four small figures running in the distance.
Then, without meaning to, her pencil moved to the side of the page. A figure separate from the others. Dark green hair. A smile that looked easy but wasn't.
She stopped. Looked at what she had drawn. She had drawn him without thinking. Again.
She closed the sketchbook quickly. Placed it under her pillow. Lay down.
She thought of Leo. Of the way he ran ahead of them without looking back. Of the way he had stood in front of her weeks ago, when Jack had cornered her. Of the way he smiled like everything was fine, even when it wasn't.
She pressed her face into the pillow.
Tara (to herself, muffled): "Why do you do this to me."
She didn't answer herself. She didn't need to.
She slept. And she was not afraid. But her heart was beating faster than it should have been.
---
Scene 7 — 7:00 PM. Elsewhere. Separate Meetings.
Hikari was not the only city watching the news that night.
---
Kazahiyo, the frozen south. Its king was young, cold, and patient.
In Kazahiyo's palace, ice covered the windows. Aki stood before one of them, not looking at anything in particular.
A soldier entered and bowed. "My lord, the spies have returned from Hikari."
Aki did not turn. "What did they say?"
"New heroes have appeared. Unknown powers. Sources of green light, ice, fire, and water."
Aki was silent for a long moment. The ice on the windows did not melt.
"Let them watch," he said finally. "We don't move yet."
---
Reige, the eastern military stronghold. Its queen was ambitious, ruthless, and waiting for an opportunity.
In Reige's palace, Taiyo sat on her throne, her red eyes unblinking. Sinji stood before her.
"The spies have returned," he said. "In Hikari, there are new heroes."
Taiyo smiled. It was not a warm smile. "I know."
"Your orders?"
"Watch them." She turned the ring on her finger slowly. "If they're a threat... we act."
---
Yoro no Okami, the northern city. Its king was arrogant, cruel, and convinced that Hikari was already defeated.
In Yoro no Okami's palace, Eliudas sat on his throne, reclining, looking uninterested. A soldier knelt before him.
"My lord, the spies—"
Eliudas laughed. "Heroes? In Hikari?"
"Yes. Their powers—"
He waved a hand. "It doesn't matter. Hikari is weak. Its heroes die quickly. Like the ones before."
---
Hikari, the city at the center. Its ruler was old, wise, and had been watching for three generations.
In Hikari, Hiroki sat in his office. Akama stood beside him, holding a report.
"The spies have returned," Akama said quietly. "The kings know now."
Hiroki looked out the window. The city was quiet. The lights were coming on, one by one.
"The time has come," he said.
"Do we act?"
Hiroki was silent for a moment. Then: "No. We wait. These heroes... they need time."
---
Scene 8 — 8:30 PM. The Dorms. Leo and Kenny's Room. Before Sleep.
Kenny sat on his bed, despite his exhaustion. He was thinking.
Kenny: "Leo, I've been thinking about the camel."
Leo, half-asleep, didn't open his eyes. "Kenny. Sleep."
Kenny: "No, I'm serious. The camel told me physics is hard. That means he's interested in teaching me. That means he's—"
Leo: "A dream."
Kenny: "A spiritual guide."
Leo opened one eye. "Your spiritual guide is a camel?"
Kenny: "Camels are intelligent animals. They—"
Leo (closing his eye): "Kenny."
Kenny: "Yes?"
Leo: "Sleep."
Kenny lay down. He was still mumbling as his eyes closed. "Spiritual guide... camel... physics..."
Leo, already half asleep, muttered: "I need a spiritual guide to teach me how to sleep."
---
Scene 9 — 10:00 PM. The Dorms. Leo and Kenny's Room.
Kenny (sitting on his bed): "I'm sleeping at ten."
Leo (looking at him): "Ten?"
Kenny: "Ten. For the first time in my life."
Leo: "And sleep?"
Kenny: "And sleep. Tomorrow is a new dawn."
Leo: "Tired?"
Kenny: "Very."
Kenny fell asleep two minutes later. Leo stayed awake a little longer. He looked at the ceiling. Thought about the morning. The running. The small powers that had appeared at his fingertips. Iruki's words: "It grows." Then he closed his eyes.
---
Scene 10 — 10:00 PM. Elsewhere. The Training Ground.
After they had disappeared behind the buildings, Iruki remained standing in the back lot. He looked at the ground. At their footprints in the dirt. Four sets. Small. Uneven. One deeper than the others.
He exhaled. It was not a sad breath. It was a long breath. An old breath. As if he had been waiting for this morning for years.
He turned. Walked into the shadows. Disappeared as he had appeared.
---
Scene 11 — 10:00 PM. Somewhere the Moonlight Doesn't Reach.
And in a place where moonlight didn't reach, Kurayami sat in his shadow. White was beside him. On the small screen, a news anchor spoke of "the unknown heroes."
White (quietly): "They're beginning."
Kurayami (with a faint smile): "They're beginning."
He took the coin from his pocket. Turned it between his fingers. He didn't look at it. He looked at the screen.
White: "Do you fear them?"
Kurayami (with a short laugh): "No. I'll give them time."
White: "How much time?"
Kurayami (returning the coin to his pocket, closing his eyes): "Not long."
