Chapter 18 - Can we still be frnd's?!

Focus- Between Silence and Light

The darkness lingered longer than expected.

No emergency backup.

No immediate restoration.

Just silence wrapped around the two of them.

---

Eric stayed where he was, seated slightly in front of John, his posture relaxed—but alert.

His eyes had adjusted enough now to make out faint outlines.

John was still leaning against the wall.

Calmer than before.

But not completely at ease.

---

"…How long has it been?" Eric asked quietly.

---

John checked his watch, though it was barely visible.

"…A few minutes."

---

Eric nodded.

"Power cuts aren't common here."

---

"…No," John agreed. "They aren't."

---

A brief pause followed.

The kind that didn't feel awkward.

Just unfilled.

---

Eric shifted slightly, resting one arm on his knee.

"…You should've told me earlier."

---

John tilted his head slightly.

"Told you what?"

---

"That you don't handle darkness well."

---

John exhaled softly.

"…It's not something I talk about."

---

Eric smirked faintly, though it wasn't visible.

"Yeah. I noticed."

---

Silence returned.

---

But this time—

It felt lighter.

---

Somewhere in the distance, a faint metallic clink echoed.

Likely from outside maintenance activity.

---

Eric's attention sharpened slightly.

"…Someone's nearby."

---

John nodded slightly.

"Maintenance, probably."

---

Eric leaned forward a bit.

"I'll check."

---

He stood up carefully and moved toward the entrance.

But before he reached the door—

He paused.

---

"…You okay staying here?"

---

John didn't answer immediately.

---

Then—

"Yes."

---

Eric glanced back once.

Even though John couldn't clearly see him.

"…I'll be quick."

---

And then he stepped out.

---

The corridor outside was dimly lit by faint emergency strips that had just begun to flicker back on.

Not fully restored.

But enough to guide movement.

---

Eric walked a short distance and spotted a maintenance worker near the breaker panel.

---

"What happened?" Eric asked.

---

The worker looked up.

"Main supply tripped. We're trying to restore it."

---

"How long?"

---

"Few more minutes."

---

Eric nodded.

"Alright."

---

He turned back toward the workshop.

---

Inside—

John remained in the same spot.

Still.

Composed.

But waiting.

---

Eric re-entered the room.

The faint emergency lights had slightly improved visibility.

---

"…It'll be back soon," Eric said.

---

John nodded.

"Good."

---

Eric leaned against a nearby table this time, closer to the center of the room.

Not too close.

Not distant either.

---

A comfortable middle ground.

---

John's gaze shifted toward him.

"…You didn't have to rush back."

---

Eric shrugged lightly.

"…I did."

---

John didn't respond.

But he understood the implication.

---

Another quiet moment passed.

---

Then Eric spoke again.

"…Earlier."

---

John looked at him.

"Yes?"

---

Eric hesitated briefly.

"…You reacted quickly when the lights went out."

---

John's expression remained neutral.

"…Instinct."

---

Eric nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

---

But there was something else he didn't say.

---

Something he had noticed.

---

John hadn't called for help.

Not loudly.

Not repeatedly.

---

He had stayed controlled.

Even in discomfort.

---

Eric realized that.

And it stayed with him.

---

Moments later—

The lights flickered again.

---

Once.

Twice.

---

And then—

*Fully restored.*

---

The room brightened instantly.

Shadows disappeared.

Details returned.

---

John blinked slightly, adjusting to the sudden light.

---

Eric straightened up.

"…There we go."

---

John stood up as well, brushing off his clothes.

"Back to normal."

---

But for a brief second—

Neither of them moved.

---

The transition from darkness to light felt… noticeable.

Not just physically.

---

But something between them had shifted again.

---

Not dramatically.

Not visibly.

---

But enough to be felt.

---

Eric glanced at John.

Then looked away.

---

"…We should continue tomorrow," Eric said.

---

John nodded.

"Yes."

---

A pause.

---

Then John added quietly—

"…Thank you."

---

Eric didn't respond immediately.

---

But after a moment—

"…Yeah."

---

And this time—

He didn't dismiss it.

---

Because for once—

The silence between them didn't feel like distance.

---

It felt like something that had been understood.
