Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Wolf Beneath the Moon

The forest beyond the outer districts

was quiet that night, too quiet for comfort. The trees stood tall and ancient,

their branches tangled like watchful fingers against the sky. A pale moon hung

overhead, bathing the ground in silver light.

Most people avoided the forest after

sunset.

Stories had traveled through the

markets and taverns for years—stories of creatures that prowled between the

trees. Some claimed they were nothing more than myths told to frighten

children. Others swore they had seen glowing eyes watching from the darkness.

But tonight, the forest was very much

alive.

A young man moved quickly through the

undergrowth, his breathing uneven. His boots crushed fallen leaves beneath him

as he ran, occasionally glancing over his shoulder.

His name was Kael.

Sweat ran down his forehead despite

the cool air. His dark hair clung to his temples, and his amber-colored eyes

darted through the forest as if expecting something to leap from the shadows.

He was being hunted.

Behind him, faint voices echoed

between the trees.

"Spread out!" one of them shouted.

"They couldn't have gone far!"

Kael cursed under his breath and

pushed himself harder, weaving between thick tree trunks. His heart pounded

violently in his chest—not just from exhaustion, but from something deeper.

Something inside him was waking.

Something dangerous.

Kael stumbled to a stop beside a small clearing. His

chest heaved as he leaned against a tree, trying to steady his breathing.

The moonlight poured down over the clearing like

liquid silver.

And that was when the pain began.

It started as a dull ache in his bones.

Then it grew.

Kael clenched his teeth as his muscles tightened

violently. His hands trembled, fingers curling into fists as his body began to

shudder.

"No… not now…" he whispered desperately.

His breathing became ragged.

The voices of the hunters were getting closer.

"Search the clearing!"

Kael's eyes widened with fear.

He looked up at the moon.

It glowed brighter than ever.

And the change began.

The pain struck like lightning.

Kael collapsed to his knees as his spine arched

violently. His muscles twisted beneath his skin as bones shifted and stretched.

A guttural growl escaped his throat.

His fingers elongated, nails sharpening into claws.

His senses exploded into life—every sound, every scent flooding his mind all at

once.

The smell of the hunters.

The smell of fear.

The smell of blood.

Kael tried to resist.

He tried to fight the change.

But the wolf inside him was stronger.

His eyes burned gold.

Dark fur spread across his skin.

And when he finally stood again, he was no longer

fully human.

The men burst into the clearing moments later.

There were five of them, armed with torches and

crossbows.

One of them froze when he saw the towering creature

standing beneath the moon.

"By the gods…" he whispered.

The werewolf turned slowly toward them.

Its golden eyes gleamed in the darkness.

Kael's mind was still there, buried deep beneath the

raging instincts of the beast.

He didn't want to hurt them.

But the wolf did not care.

The hunters raised their weapons.

"Fire!"

A bolt shot through the air.

Kael moved faster than any human could see.

He leapt forward, claws flashing in the moonlight.

The bolt missed him entirely, striking a tree behind him.

The first hunter barely had time to scream before

Kael knocked him to the ground.

The others scattered in panic.

"Run!"

"Run!"

But the forest belonged to the wolf now.

Kael moved like a shadow between the trees—swift,

silent, unstoppable. Within moments the hunters fled deeper into the woods,

abandoning their torches and weapons.

The werewolf stood alone in the clearing again.

His chest rose and fell slowly as the rage began to

fade.

Kael staggered backward.

The transformation was beginning to weaken.

His claws shrank.

The fur receded.

And slowly, painfully, he became human again.

He collapsed onto the ground, breathing heavily.

"I… didn't kill them…" he murmured, relief washing

over him.

That mattered.

It meant he still had control.

At least… a little.

Kael stared up at the moon through the branches

above.

His life had changed the night he was bitten.

Once he had been a traveler, a wandering swordsman

searching for work and adventure.

Now he was something else.

Something feared.

Something hunted.

And the worst part was knowing that the world would

never see the difference between the monster and the man.

After a long while, Kael slowly pushed himself to

his feet.

The forest had grown quiet again.

But he knew the hunters would return.

People always did.

Fear had a way of spreading faster than truth.

He picked up the cloak he had discarded during the

transformation and wrapped it around himself.

For a moment, he hesitated.

Then he looked toward the distant lights of the city

glowing on the horizon.

A strange feeling stirred inside him.

Something was pulling him there.

A sense that his path was about to cross with

something… or someone… important.

Kael didn't know it yet.

But somewhere within those streets, a young man

named Damon was beginning his own journey.

And fate had already begun weaving their stories

together.

Kael stepped out of the forest and began walking

toward the distant lights.

Behind him, the moon hung silently in the sky.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because the world was changing.

Shadows were rising.

Powerful forces were moving unseen.
