Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: When the Echo Follows

The moment the figure stopped moving, the forest changed its mind about being still.

Not loudly. Not visibly at first.

But subtly—like the world had just realized it had been holding its breath too long.

Jeanne felt it first.

"…it's gone quieter again," she said.

Selene didn't look away from the figure.

"No," she corrected softly.

"It's focusing."

Damon stood at the center of that focus.

He didn't move.

Neither did the thing in front of him.

It was no longer approaching.

No longer testing distance.

Just observing him with an intensity that felt less like sight—and more like comprehension.

The prince raised his hand slightly again, golden light returning in a controlled shimmer.

"…this isn't a scout," he said.

Selene nodded once.

"No."

Jeanne swallowed.

"Then what is it?"

Selene finally answered.

"A result."

That word didn't help.

It only made things heavier.

The figure shifted again.

Not forward this time.

Sideways.

Like it was adjusting perspective.

Trying to understand Damon from another angle.

And as it moved—

the ground answered again.

A pulse.

Then another.

But now, it wasn't random.

It was structured.

Rhythmic.

Almost like thought forming.

Damon's expression tightened slightly.

"…it's building something."

Selene's gaze sharpened.

"Yes."

Jeanne stepped back.

"Building what?"

Selene didn't answer immediately.

Because she was watching the same thing Damon was beginning to feel.

The figure wasn't just reacting anymore.

It was assembling.

Piece by piece.

From every interaction.

Every pulse.

Every moment Damon had touched the fracture system.

The prince stepped forward half a pace.

"…we stop it now."

Damon finally spoke.

"How?"

The prince didn't hesitate.

"We remove the source."

Jeanne frowned.

"The source of what?"

Selene answered quietly.

"Of recognition."

A silence followed that.

A heavy one.

Because it pointed toward something none of them had fully admitted yet.

The figure tilted its head again.

And this time—

Damon felt it clearly.

Not just pressure.

Not just awareness.

But extraction.

Like something was trying to pull meaning out of him directly.

Jeanne flinched slightly.

"…I don't like how it feels like it's inside my head even when it's not looking at me."

Selene's voice stayed calm.

"That's because it's not just observing him anymore."

A pause.

"It's extending from him."

Damon's eyes narrowed.

"…what does that mean?"

Selene finally looked at him fully.

"It means the connection isn't one-way anymore."

The forest reacted immediately after that statement.

The wind shifted.

But not naturally.

It curved around Damon.

Not avoiding him—

following him.

The prince's light flared briefly.

"…that's not possible."

Selene didn't respond to that.

Because it was already happening.

The figure took a step forward again.

Closer now.

But still not aggressive.

Still not rushing.

Just… inevitable.

Jeanne's voice dropped.

"…Damon, it's getting closer."

He didn't move away.

"I know."

The prince stepped in front slightly.

Golden light forming a thin barrier again.

"…we break the connection."

Selene shook her head.

"That won't work anymore."

The prince looked at her sharply.

"And why not?"

Selene's gaze stayed on Damon.

"Because it already confirmed him."

Jeanne frowned.

"Confirmed what?"

Selene answered simply.

"Compatibility."

That word hit harder than expected.

Damon finally exhaled slowly.

"…you're saying it chose me."

Selene corrected softly.

"No."

A pause.

"It identified you as the most responsive structure."

Jeanne blinked.

"That's worse."

Selene didn't disagree.

"It usually is."

The figure moved again.

And this time—

it stopped halfway.

As if something interrupted it.

Not external.

Internal.

Damon felt it too.

A shift.

A hesitation.

Selene's eyes narrowed.

"…something else is interfering."

The prince looked around immediately.

"What?"

Selene didn't answer right away.

Because she was listening to something none of them could hear yet.

Then—

far away.

Another pulse.

Different.

Stronger.

Not matching the figure's rhythm.

But challenging it.

Jeanne stepped back.

"…there's more than one?"

Selene nodded once.

"Yes."

The forest seemed to react to that realization.

The air tightened.

Not around them this time.

But across distance.

Like multiple points of pressure acknowledging each other.

Damon looked forward again.

The figure had turned slightly now.

Not toward him fully anymore.

But toward something beyond them.

Selene spoke quietly.

"…it's responding to another call."

The prince tightened his grip on his light.

"Another one like it?"

Selene shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"Something older."

Jeanne whispered.

"…that sounds worse."

Selene agreed.

"It is."

The figure took one last step forward toward Damon—

then stopped completely.

As if deciding he was no longer the priority.

Damon felt the connection loosen slightly.

But not disappear.

Just shift.

The figure turned away.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And began walking back into the trees.

Jeanne blinked.

"…it's leaving?"

Selene watched carefully.

"No."

A pause.

"It's reporting."

The prince lowered his light slightly.

"…to what?"

Selene's answer came quietly.

"To whatever made it."

The forest grew silent again.

But this time—

it wasn't peace.

It was preparation.

Damon finally lowered his hand.

"…this just got bigger."

Selene nodded.

"Yes."

Jeanne exhaled slowly.

"Of course it did."

And somewhere far beyond the trees—

another fracture responded to the same signal.

Not breaking.

Not opening.

Just acknowledging.

That something had been found.

And was now being watched.
