Chapter 16 - THE FOUNDATION OF POWER

CHAPTER 16: Foundations of Power

The valley no longer felt like a place of rest.

It had become a forge.

Ryan stood in the clearing before sunrise, his sword already drawn, his breathing slow but deliberate. The ground beneath his feet was uneven from days of repeated impact, cracked and worn from constant motion.

Five days remained.

And Shen Liang had stopped holding back.

"Again," Shen Liang said.

Ryan moved.

"Void Severing Sword Scripture — Third Form: Wind Severing Strike."

His body surged forward, the strike cutting through the air with sharp precision. But beneath the motion, something deeper carried it—his stance rooted more firmly, his balance no longer wavering under the force.

The pulse within him had changed.

It no longer flowed randomly through his body.

It moved in rhythm.

Each beat of his heart pushed energy through his meridians in controlled waves, strengthening muscle, reinforcing bone, stabilizing motion. His blood itself seemed to carry power now, circulating it more efficiently with every strike.

"Fourth Form: Space Ripple Slash."

The blade cut forward—

and the air bent.

The distortion held longer than before, compressing into a tighter arc before dispersing under Shen Liang's control.

Shen Liang stepped through it.

Ryan's vision sharpened instantly.

He adjusted his footing—

faster this time.

Not explosive.

Not forced.

Refined.

A faint afterimage lingered where he had just been.

Shen Liang's strike missed by a fraction.

Ryan repositioned behind him.

"Second Form: Flowing Edge."

The blade swept toward Shen Liang's side—

only to be stopped again.

But Ryan didn't retreat.

He stepped again.

Faster.

Cleaner.

Something new had begun to take shape within his movement.

Ryan's breathing remained steady, but his body had begun to respond differently. Each step no longer relied purely on force—it shifted, flickered slightly, as though his presence lagged behind his actual position for the briefest instant.

Not a full technique.

Not yet.

But the beginning of one.

Shen Liang stepped back.

For the first time in days—

He created distance.

Ryan stopped.

The clearing fell silent.

"…Do you understand what you're doing?" Shen Liang asked.

Ryan exhaled slowly.

"…I'm combining them."

Shen Liang nodded once.

"Then understand them properly."

He raised a hand slightly.

"Your foundation—the thing you created…"

A pause.

"…is not a technique."

Ryan frowned slightly.

"It is a system."

The words lingered.

Shen Liang continued, his tone calm but precise.

"The way your energy circulates… the way your body adapts… the way your strength increases under pressure…"

He looked directly at Ryan.

"…that is not normal cultivation."

Ryan remained silent.

Shen Liang turned slightly.

"If I had to name it," he said, "it would be a body-refining and circulation method."

A brief pause.

"…one that is still incomplete."

Ryan tightened his grip slightly.

"…How far can it go?"

Shen Liang looked toward him.

"That depends on you."

Silence followed.

Ryan closed his eyes briefly.

Inside—

He could feel it.

The structure.

Not just fragments anymore—

But something forming.

A path.

The Heavenly Pulse.

It wasn't just one technique.

It was layered.

Each stage building upon the last.

From awakening…

To ignition…

To resonance…

To tempering…

He could feel where he stood.

At the beginning.

But no longer at zero.

Ryan opened his eyes.

"…It's not finished."

Shen Liang nodded.

"No."

A pause.

"…But it's yours."

The wind shifted softly through the clearing.

"And your sword," Shen Liang continued, "is different."

Ryan glanced at the blade in his hand.

"That is a complete technique," Shen Liang said. "One that already has structure."

He stepped closer.

"Forms. Progression. Limits."

Ryan's grip tightened slightly.

"…Four forms."

Shen Liang nodded.

"And that is all you can handle for now."

Ryan didn't argue.

He understood.

Too much—

Would break him.

"Then refine them," Shen Liang said.

"…until they become yours."

The weight of those words settled deeply.

Not just learning.

Ownership.

Shen Liang turned away.

"That is enough for today."

Ryan frowned slightly.

"…We're stopping early?"

"…No."

Shen Liang glanced back.

"…I am leaving."

Ryan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"For what?"

"Something I need to retrieve."

A pause.

"I will return before nightfall."

Then—

He was gone.

The clearing fell silent again.

Ryan stood alone.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Then—

He turned.

Toward the mountain path.

The place Shen Liang rarely allowed him to enter.

The library.

Ryan exhaled slowly.

"…Then let's see everything."

And he walked forward.
