Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Price of Treason

The violet smoke from the shattered "Eye of the Sun" did not dissipate; it curled around Elena's feet like a living, sentient fog. The Grand Ballroom, once a theater of opulence, now felt like a pressurized chamber on the verge of a catastrophic breach. A thousand nobles stood as if turned to salt, their faces ashen in the flickering, dying light of the crystalline wreckage.

Elena felt the "Queen's Resonance" vibrating in the very marrow of her bones—a cold, harmonic power that didn't just ask for attention; it demanded total, unconditional submission.

Lucian Thorne's hand was no longer a caress; it was an iron shackle around her waist. He pulled her flush against his side, his body radiating a lethal, predatory heat. He remained indifferent to the gasps of the court or the broken shards at his feet. His universe had narrowed down to the woman he had claimed.

"You did well, Elena," Lucian whispered, his voice a dark, gravelly rasp against her ear. "You've shown them the fire they were so desperate to extinguish."

Elena looked toward the royal dais, her eyes glowing like twin violet stars. Crown Prince Leo was struggling to his feet, his pristine white-and-gold uniform now a ruin of blood and dust. Shards of the detector were still embedded in his palms, glinting like diamonds in the gore. He looked less like a sovereign and more like a cornered, rabid animal.

"This is not over!" Leo shrieked, his voice cracking under the weight of his humiliation. "She is a fraud! A biological weapon synthesized in a Thorne laboratory!"

The Emperor sat motionless, his greedy eyes fixed on Elena with a terrifying intensity. He didn't see a girl; he saw a battery—the ultimate key to the ancient vaults of the Lumen Empire.

"Be silent, Leo," the Emperor commanded. The Prince froze, his jaw dropping in shock. "The crystal has spoken. The blood is undeniable."

The Emperor leaned forward, his withered hands gripping the arms of his throne. "Elena Valois is a treasure of the Empire. And a treasure of this magnitude cannot be permitted to remain the property of a private citizen."

Elena felt Lucian's grip tighten until it bruised. The "Devil CEO" let out a low, predatory chuckle that cut through the heavy atmosphere like a blade.

"A private citizen, Your Majesty?" Lucian asked, stepping forward and forcing the crowd to part before him like a dark sea. "I am the man who holds the deed to this palace. I fund your armies, your gardens, and your very breath. In this city, the only 'citizens' are the ones I have not yet decided to bankrupt."

The Emperor's face turned a bruised, sickly shade of purple. "Your arrogance has limits, Thorne. By Imperial Law, any awakened Lumen belongs to the Golden Throne."

Leo stepped forward, a sickening smirk crossing his face as he realized the legal loophole. He wiped blood onto his trousers and pulled a scroll of black parchment from his belt.

"Indeed," Leo sneered. "The Thorne-Valois contract is a mere commercial agreement. But the 'Blood-Decree' is a divine mandate. As Crown Prince, I exercise the 'Right of Requisition.' The Empire hereby assumes all debts of the Valois House. Lucian Thorne, you will be compensated by the Treasury in full. In exchange, Elena Valois is now a ward of the Crown. She will be moved to the Inner Palace tonight... to prepare for her wedding to me."

A murmur like a swarm of angry bees filled the hall. It was a legal execution of Lucian's ownership. By "buying back" the debt, Leo was effectively stealing Lucian's prize under the guise of state interest.

Elena felt a sharp, crystalline anger rising in her chest. She was being traded like a commodity between two hungry wolves. She looked at Leo, seeing the pathetic, hollow lust in his eyes. He didn't want her; he wanted her frequency to power his dying throne.

"I am not a ward," Elena said, her voice cracking like a whip. "And I will not marry a man who left me to die in the rain."

Leo laughed, a high, nervous sound. "You have no choice, Elena. Guards! Take the Ward into custody!"

Twelve Imperial Knights stepped forward, their silver lances leveled at Lucian's heart. The guests scrambled back, chairs overturning in the frantic rush to avoid the line of fire. Lucian didn't flinch. He stood like a god of the abyss.

"Lucian..." Elena whispered, her hand moving to his arm. She felt his muscles vibrating like a high-tension wire.

"Stay behind me, Elena," he commanded. His silver eyes were no longer human; they were twin whirlpools of madness.

"Your Majesty," Lucian said, his voice dropping to a whisper that carried further than Leo's scream. "I gave you the credits to keep your throne upright. I gave you the technology to keep your people fed. But you have made the fatal mistake of thinking I am your servant."

Lucian stepped toward the knights, ignoring the lances pressing into his chest. The lead knight's hand trembled; no one wanted to be the man who killed the man who owned the world.

"Thorne, stand down!" the Emperor shouted. "You cannot fight the Empire!"

"I am the Empire," Lucian roared.

He moved with a velocity the human eye couldn't track. One moment he was at Elena's side; the next, he was on the dais, his hand locked around Leo's throat. The Prince didn't even have time to gasp. Lucian lifted him off the ground with a single, massive arm, Leo's legs kicking uselessly as his face turned a terrifying shade of blue.

"Call off the requisition," Lucian growled, his voice vibrating with pure, unadulterated malice. "Declare that Elena Valois belongs to no one but herself. And that her contract with me is eternal."

"Thorne! This is high treason!" the Emperor cried.

"Then I will be a traitor," Lucian replied. "I will burn this palace to the ground. I will stop the flow of gold and power. I will give you a golden age of silence and ashes."

"Lucian, stop!" Elena shouted, stepping onto the dais. She saw the "100% Obsession" the system feared. He wasn't just defending her; he was reclaiming his universe.

She walked up to him and placed her hand over his on Leo's throat. The "Queen's Resonance" flowed from her into him.

Lucian's breathing hitched. The silver fire in his eyes flickered as he felt the cool, violet power of her soul touching his.

"Drop him, Lucian," she whispered. "Not for the law. For me."

Lucian stared at her for an agonizing moment before opening his hand. Leo crumpled to the floor like a broken puppet, retching and clawing at his neck. Lucian didn't look at him. He only looked at Elena.

"You chose me," he murmured.

"I chose to survive," she corrected, her heart racing. She turned to the Emperor. "The requisition is a dead letter. The Thorne Empire and the Valois House are one. If you move against us, you move against the world's heart."

The Emperor, seeing his broken son and the goddess before him, whispered, "The requisition is cancelled. The contract stands."

But as the knights backed away, the "Interference" hit Elena like a physical blow. The man in the cloak—her brother, Silas—was gone, but a cold wind blew through the shattered windows.

"We're leaving," Lucian said, grabbing her hand. He dragged her toward the exit, the nobles shrinking away in terror. But halfway there, Elena's vision blurred.

"Lucian..." she gasped, her legs failing. He caught her, his voice full of a panic she had never heard.

Suddenly, the ceiling began to crack—not from power, but from precision explosions. Black-clad figures with robotic grey eyes dropped from the rafters on silk ropes.

"Take the Queen!" a voice shouted.

Lucian pulled a gun, firing with lethal accuracy. "You won't touch her!"

But a localized pulse of energy neutralized the room. Elena felt her power being sucked into a void. Silas appeared, holding a humming device.

"She doesn't belong to you, Thorne," Silas said. "She belongs to the future."

Silas pressed a button, and a wave of grey energy knocked Lucian back. Elena felt herself being lifted by a magnetic force toward a waiting craft.

"Lucian!" she screamed.

Lucian fought the wave, his fingers inches from hers, his face a mask of absolute, soul-destroying agony. He was seeing Sylvia die all over again.

"I'll kill you!" Lucian screamed at Silas. "I'll tear your heart out!"

Silas grabbed Elena's waist. "She was never yours to keep, Devil."

The craft roared into the sky. Elena watched Lucian—a king of a ruined world—standing in the fire, screaming her name until the darkness took her.
