Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Shadows Beneath the Surface

The training hall slowly returned to its usual rhythm after Lin Ye's duel with Han Luo, but something subtle had changed.

Eyes lingered longer.

Whispers carried further.

Respect… and caution.

Lin Ye walked out of the arena area with a lazy stretch, as if he had just finished a light warm-up instead of a duel that had drawn the attention of nearly the entire hall.

"…That escalated quickly," he muttered.

Gu Chen walked beside him, his tone calm as always.

"You handled it well."

Lin Ye shrugged.

"I didn't even get warmed up."

Gu Chen gave him a sideways glance.

"That's exactly the problem."

Lin Ye smirked.

"Sounds like jealousy."

Gu Chen ignored that.

Instead, his gaze shifted slightly.

"…You felt it too, didn't you?"

Lin Ye's smile faded just a little.

"Yeah."

Because beneath the surface calm of the Inner Sect—

Something felt off.

Not obvious.

Not visible.

But present.

Like a shadow lurking behind a bright light.

Before Lin Ye could say more, a figure approached them from the side.

It was Zhao Tian.

His steps were unhurried, his posture as composed as ever.

"You're attracting attention," Zhao Tian said casually.

Lin Ye sighed.

"I noticed."

Zhao Tian's gaze flicked briefly toward the surrounding disciples.

"Attention isn't always a good thing here."

Gu Chen nodded slightly.

"Inner Sect politics."

Lin Ye raised an eyebrow.

"…Politics?"

Zhao Tian crossed his arms.

"The Inner Sect isn't just about cultivation."

"There are factions."

"Power struggles."

"Competition for resources."

Lin Ye rubbed his temples.

"…Of course there are."

Because nothing in this world could ever be simple.

Zhao Tian's voice lowered slightly.

"You should be careful."

Lin Ye looked at him.

"That sounds like advice."

Zhao Tian shrugged.

"Call it… curiosity."

Lin Ye smirked.

"You don't want me dying too early?"

Zhao Tian smiled faintly.

"That would be disappointing."

Gu Chen crossed his arms.

"…Who should we watch out for?"

Zhao Tian's expression shifted slightly.

"There's one group in particular."

His gaze hardened.

"The Black Fang faction."

Lin Ye blinked.

"…That sounds friendly."

Zhao Tian ignored the sarcasm.

"They recruit strong disciples early."

"And eliminate potential threats."

Lin Ye chuckled.

"…And I'm guessing I count as a threat."

Zhao Tian nodded.

"Very much."

Gu Chen added quietly,

"They value control."

"Anyone unpredictable…"

"…They deal with."

Lin Ye exhaled slowly.

"…Great."

More trouble.

Just what he needed.

But deep inside—

Something stirred.

The demonic bloodline responded faintly.

Almost eagerly.

The system flickered.

[Hostile Environment Detected]

[Potential Combat Opportunities Increased]

Lin Ye smirked slightly.

"…You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

Zhao Tian noticed the faint change in his expression.

"…That look again."

Lin Ye glanced at him.

"What look?"

Zhao Tian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he said calmly,

"The look of someone who doesn't fear trouble."

Lin Ye chuckled.

"I've had worse."

For a moment, the three of them stood in silence.

Then—

A sharp voice cut through the air.

"So this is the famous Blood Shadow?"

The tone was cold.

Unfriendly.

Lin Ye turned his head.

A group of five inner disciples approached from across the training grounds. Their robes were darker than usual, trimmed with black patterns instead of the standard blue.

At the center stood a tall man with narrow eyes and a faint smirk.

Zhao Tian's expression hardened slightly.

"…Black Fang."

Lin Ye sighed.

"…That was fast."

The man stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Lin Ye.

"I've been hearing your name all morning."

Lin Ye scratched his cheek.

"Yeah, it's getting old."

The man ignored the comment.

"I'm Wu Shan."

His aura flared slightly.

Level 9.

Strong.

Not quite Zhao Tian's level—

But close.

"And I represent Black Fang."

Lin Ye tilted his head.

"…Congratulations?"

A few nearby disciples snorted quietly.

Wu Shan's smile thinned.

"You have talent."

"But talent without backing…"

"…doesn't last long."

Lin Ye crossed his arms.

"And?"

Wu Shan's gaze sharpened.

"Join us."

The air grew tense.

Gu Chen frowned slightly.

Zhao Tian remained silent.

Everyone nearby knew what this meant.

An invitation.

Or a warning.

Lin Ye blinked.

"…That's it?"

Wu Shan nodded.

"Join Black Fang."

"We provide resources."

"Protection."

"Opportunities."

Lin Ye thought about it for a moment.

Then—

He smiled.

"…No."

The answer was simple.

Direct.

And immediate.

The atmosphere instantly turned cold.

Wu Shan's eyes narrowed.

"…You should think carefully."

Lin Ye shrugged.

"I did."

Wu Shan took a step closer.

His aura pressed down slightly.

"Refusing us…"

"…isn't wise."

Lin Ye looked at him calmly.

"I'm not a big fan of being controlled."

Wu Shan's voice dropped.

"Control keeps people alive."

Lin Ye's smile faded slightly.

"So does strength."

For a brief moment—

The two stared at each other.

Tension crackled in the air.

Then Wu Shan stepped back slowly.

His expression returned to calm.

"…Fine."

He turned away.

"But remember this."

His voice echoed slightly as he walked off.

"In the Inner Sect…"

"…you either stand with someone."

"…or you fall alone."

The group disappeared into the crowd.

Silence lingered.

Lin Ye exhaled slowly.

"…Well, that went well."

Gu Chen shook his head slightly.

"You made enemies."

Lin Ye shrugged.

"They made themselves."

Zhao Tian looked at him thoughtfully.

"You could have avoided that."

Lin Ye smirked.

"And miss the fun?"

Zhao Tian laughed quietly.

"…You really are reckless."

Lin Ye looked toward the distant mountain peaks.

His eyes gleamed faintly.

"Maybe."

"But I didn't come here to play safe."

Inside him—

The demonic bloodline stirred again.

Stronger.

Restless.

The system flickered faintly.

[Bloodline Awakening: 85%]

Lin Ye's smile deepened slightly.

"…Let them come."

Because in this world—

Danger wasn't something to avoid.

It was something to overcome.

And the Inner Sect had just given him his next challenge.
