Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Trust is Built Before It Breaks

The village did not return to him.

It adjusted around him.

By the time the sun lowered again, the invisible boundary had settled into something permanent. People no longer needed to look at Kritagya to avoid him. Their bodies moved instinctively, paths shifting before contact, conversations redirecting without pause.

It was no longer reaction.

It was adaptation.

Kritagya walked through it without resistance.

Because resistance required purpose.

And purpose—

had begun to narrow.

The mark remained quiet.

That, more than anything, kept his attention.

It had not pulsed since morning.

It had not reacted.

It had not demanded.

It waited.

That meant—

something was coming.

Kritagya stopped near the eastern side of the village.

Not because he had decided to.

Because something aligned.

Ariv was there.

Leaning against a half-broken wooden fence, looking out toward the open land where the fields stretched unevenly toward the forest. He did not turn immediately when Kritagya approached.

He already knew.

"You came."

The words were simple.

Not surprised.

Not expectant.

Kritagya stepped closer.

"You said it mattered."

Ariv nodded slightly.

"It will."

A pause.

The wind moved faintly through the grass, carrying a dry sound across the field. For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Ariv turned.

"You don't trust people."

The statement was direct.

Not accusing.

Observing.

Kritagya met his gaze.

"Trust is inefficient."

Ariv smiled slightly.

"Only when it breaks."

Kritagya did not respond.

Because the statement—

introduced a variable he had not been using.

Outcome-based value.

Ariv stepped away from the fence.

"Come," he said. "I want to show you something."

Kritagya did not ask what.

He followed.

They walked along the edge of the field, away from the center of the village, toward a narrower path that curved slightly upward into uneven terrain. The ground became rougher, less traveled.

Fewer people came here.

That was intentional.

Vyom followed behind them.

At a distance.

Not close enough to join.

Not far enough to leave.

Its presence remained—

uncertain.

Ariv noticed.

But did not comment.

"That wolf," he said after a while, "it doesn't trust you anymore."

Kritagya did not look back.

"It still follows."

Ariv nodded.

"Following isn't trust."

Another pause.

Kritagya processed the statement.

Then—

"Define trust."

Ariv exhaled softly.

"Standing close without needing a reason to."

Kritagya's gaze shifted slightly.

Inward.

That condition—

no longer applied.

Ariv stopped walking.

They had reached a small rise in the ground, where the land dipped slightly beyond it, forming a shallow hollow.

"This is where I come when I want to think," he said.

Kritagya observed the space.

Quiet.

Isolated.

Stable.

No disturbance.

Ariv sat down on the edge of the slope.

Relaxed.

Unforced.

Kritagya remained standing.

"I saw it too," Ariv said after a moment.

Kritagya looked at him.

"The thing in the field."

A pause.

"I saw how it moved."

Another pause.

"And I saw you."

Kritagya said nothing.

Ariv continued.

"You didn't hesitate."

The words were not admiration.

They were observation.

"That's not normal."

Kritagya responded.

"Normal is irrelevant."

Ariv nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

A pause.

"But it's what keeps people from becoming something else."

Kritagya remained still.

The statement aligned.

With something—

he had already begun to understand.

Ariv leaned back slightly, resting his weight on his hands.

"You're not like them anymore."

He didn't need to specify who "them" meant.

"Then define what I am."

Ariv looked at him.

For a moment—

he did not answer.

Because the answer—

required honesty.

"You're becoming something that doesn't need anyone."

The words remained.

Not rejected.

Not accepted.

Observed.

Kritagya turned slightly.

His gaze moved toward the distance—

where Vyom stood.

Still.

Watching.

Not approaching.

Not leaving.

Ariv followed his gaze.

"That's what I mean."

He stood up slowly.

"The moment something stops needing connection—"

He stepped closer to Kritagya.

"—it starts losing it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Because the statement—

aligned.

Not logically.

But visibly.

Kritagya turned away.

The conversation had reached a point—

where it no longer added data.

He began walking back.

Ariv followed.

This time—

they walked side by side.

Not close.

But aligned.

Behind them, Vyom hesitated.

Then followed.

But the distance remained.

Unchanged.

As they neared the village again, the light began to fade.

Evening approached.

And with it—

something else.

The mark pulsed.

Suddenly.

Sharply.

Kritagya stopped.

Ariv noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Kritagya did not answer.

Because the answer—

was not external.

The presence surged.

Not gradual.

Immediate.

The voice spoke.

Clear.

"Now."

Kritagya's eyes sharpened.

The disturbance was back.

Stronger than before.

And this time—

it was not waiting.

Kritagya turned toward the forest.

Without hesitation.

Ariv followed his gaze.

And for the first time—

his expression changed.

Not curiosity.

Not calm.

Concern.

"What is that?"

Kritagya spoke.

Quietly.

"It's starting."
