Chapter 86 - THE SHADOW

I released Sean's arm slowly and took a few casual steps away from him, pretending to stretch so I could move closer to the patrol wolf without drawing attention. The border hummed against my skin as I neared it, that low strange pressure that always sat at the edge of pack land.

I looked out through the trees and Cel pulled my focus to a hedge several metres in. A shadow sat within the shape of the greenery, slightly wrong in a way I could not immediately explain. If she had not directed me I would have dismissed it entirely as a trick of the light.

I squinted and looked harder. The shadow moved.

Two bright eyes stared back at me from within the shrubbery. I held my breath and stayed completely still, watching as the form shifted between the branches. When it finally emerged I let out a slow breath. It was a wild wolf pup, small and stumbling, pure animal by all appearances and nothing more.
