I scanned the sheet of paper and out of habit let my eyes drift toward my old pack's name. I did not find it. I went still and looked again to be certain, running my finger down the list slowly.
It was not there.
My old pack had over two hundred members. By Phoenix's own reckoning, a pack that size should have been one of the first to be hit. The absence of it on the list sat wrong and cold in my stomach.
"You have noticed something," Pollux said, appearing beside me.
He was only a few inches taller than me and up close the similarity between us was striking in a way that I kept getting surprised by. Same eye colour, exact same shade, looking back at me while he studied me with the same expression I was probably wearing.
I shook the observation off and pointed to the gap in the list. "My old pack is not on here."
He frowned. "So?"
"They have over two hundred pack members. If the pattern holds, why have they not lost any women?" I looked around at the others.
