Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — Boundaries

Lord left the city behind. There was no reason to test anything there—too much interference, too many variables. If he was going to understand the limits of this world, he needed a controlled environment. An open stretch of land was enough.

He stood still for a moment, focusing inward. Since arriving, he had already confirmed the basics. He could perceive the world without restriction, and he could reposition himself without resistance. But anything that altered the structure around him met interference. That was the pattern. Now he needed to define it.

Lord raised his hand and focused on the space directly in front of him. Instead of forcing a large change, he applied a small one. The distance between two points—no more than a few feet—compressed slightly. This time, the world didn't correct it immediately. It held.

He maintained it for several seconds, watching closely. There was resistance, but it was gradual. The space didn't snap back—it pushed steadily until the distortion faded and everything returned to normal.

Lord lowered his hand. Minor changes were allowed, but only temporarily.

He tried again, increasing the scale. The same effect formed, but the response was different. The correction came faster and with more force, and the space stabilized almost instantly.

Larger changes were rejected.

He shifted his approach. Instead of altering the space around him, he focused on his own position.

Then he moved.

The transition was immediate. One moment he stood in the open field, and the next he stood miles away. There was no resistance, no delay.

Movement worked.

Lord paused, considering that. The world did not interfere as long as he wasn't changing it—only his place within it.

He tested one final variation. This time, he reached for a distant point—not to move, but to connect the space between.

For a brief moment, it worked.

Then the resistance hit.

Stronger than before. Immediate. The connection collapsed before it could stabilize.

Lord lowered his hand.

Long-range manipulation was not permitted.

That completed the pattern.

Small distortions could exist briefly. Larger ones were corrected immediately. Attempts to extend that control over distance failed. Movement, however, remained unaffected.

The rules were consistent.

Lord remained still for a moment, running through the results again. This world did not remove his power—it limited how much of it could affect the environment at once.

That meant the restriction wasn't his ability.

It was a scale.

He looked out across the empty land, his expression unchanged.

"This can be adjusted."

There was no urgency in the thought. No frustration.

Just certainty.
