Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 — Convergence

The distortion hadn't gone unnoticed.

It was different from the others.

Not internal.

Not part of the system he had been analyzing.

This one came from outside.

Lord stilled, his awareness shifting upward. The sky appeared unchanged, the world continuing as if nothing had occurred. But beneath that surface, the structure had been disturbed.

"A controlled breach," Lord said quietly.

It wasn't chaotic. It wasn't forced.

It had been opened.

That made it intentional.

The energy signature was unfamiliar, yet it followed a pattern he had begun to understand. It did not resist the system the way his own presence did.

It aligned with it.

Partially.

That alone made it worth examining.

Lord stepped forward—and vanished.

When he arrived, the ground was still settling.

A shallow crater spread outward from a single point of impact, fractured earth marking where something had descended with force. Residual energy lingered in the air, fading but not gone.

At the center stood a man.

Thor.

He stood tall, shoulders squared, posture unshaken despite the impact. His presence carried weight—not just physical, but something deeper. It wasn't chaotic power.

It was lineage.

Authority.

His gaze lifted immediately, locking onto Lord without hesitation.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Lord observed him—not his appearance, but what defined him. The energy was structured, but not artificially. It was inherited, reinforced, and connected to something beyond this world.

Not external in the same way as the Ancient One.

Not contained like the Tesseract.

But still—

Anchored to a higher system.

"A localized manifestation tied to a higher structure," Lord said.

Thor frowned slightly at that, his expression shifting between confusion and irritation.

"You speak as though I am some object to be studied," Thor said, his voice firm, edged with restrained impatience. "And yet you appear unannounced in my presence."

He took a step forward, chin raised slightly.

"Explain yourself."

Lord didn't react to the demand.

"You entered through a controlled pathway," Lord continued calmly. "It did not resist you. That implies authority over the system you traversed."

Thor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You speak of the Bifrost," Thor said. "A power you clearly do not understand."

Lord met his gaze without change.

"It is understood well enough," he replied. "You were not opposed by this world. That distinguishes you from other external forces."

That was enough to confirm it.

Thor studied him more carefully now, the irritation not gone—but replaced with something sharper.

"I felt your presence before I arrived," Thor said. "A disruption across the realms. Unnatural. Unrestrained."

His tone hardened.

"That was you."

Lord answered without hesitation.

"That was an interaction," he said. "Your interpretation is imprecise."

Thor let out a short, disbelieving breath, a hint of a scoff in it.

"You tear at the fabric of the realms and call it imprecise?" Thor said. "Whatever you did—it was not contained."

"That is a limitation of this system," Lord replied.

That answer only seemed to irritate Thor further.

He stepped forward again, this time with more intent, his presence pressing outward.

"Then perhaps you should stop before you break something you cannot fix," Thor said, his voice firmer now, carrying the weight of command. "You are not the only one who holds power here."

Lord met his gaze evenly.

"That is irrelevant," he said.

There was no arrogance in the statement.

Only certainty.

That was enough to spark something.

Thor's expression sharpened immediately.

"You would do well to reconsider that," Thor said, his tone dropping slightly, more dangerous now. "I have seen what happens when power goes unchecked."

Lord didn't move.

"Yes," he replied. "And it did not prevent you from using it."

That landed.

Thor's jaw tightened slightly.

Before he could respond—

The sound of approaching vehicles cut through the moment.

Both of them turned.

Multiple units. Coordinated. Fast.

"They've responded quickly," Lord said.

Thor glanced toward the incoming convoy, then back at Lord.

"Are they yours?" Thor asked.

"No," Lord replied.

Moments later, S.H.I.E.L.D. units surrounded the perimeter. Agents moved into position with practiced precision, weapons raised—not fired, but ready.

"Targets acquired," one agent said over comms. "One confirmed. Second unidentified."

Their weapons focused on Lord.

Not Thor.

Him.

Thor noticed immediately.

A faint, almost amused expression crossed his face.

"It seems you are the greater concern," Thor said.

"That is correct," Lord replied.

Containment protocols began activating, energy signatures building as systems prepared to engage.

Lord observed them briefly.

"They have adjusted their methods," he said.

Thor followed his gaze, then shook his head slightly.

"And you intend to ignore them?" Thor asked.

"Yes."

Simple. Direct.

Thor let out a short breath, something between a laugh and disbelief.

"You are either very confident," Thor said, "or very foolish."

Lord stepped forward.

The space around him shifted—subtle, controlled, enough to distort the alignment of the agents surrounding them.

"They are ineffective," Lord said.

The ground itself seemed to tighten slightly, pressure building without release.

Thor's expression changed again—not dismissive anymore.

Focused.

"…You are going to cause more damage than you understand," Thor said.

Lord glanced at him briefly.

"No," he replied.

A pause.

"They already exist."
