Chapter 40 - Chapter 41 — Eyes Everywhere

Inside S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, the room was quiet.

Not tense.

Not chaotic.

Just—

Focused.

Natasha Romanoff stood across from Nick Fury.

"You're telling me he knew," Fury said.

"Yes."

"How early?"

"…Not at the start. But before the end."

Fury nodded slightly.

"And he stayed."

"Yes."

"…Why?"

"…Because he wanted to."

That answer lingered.

"…He let the conversation happen," Fury said.

"Yeah."

"…Which means he got something out of it."

Natasha nodded.

"He did."

"What?" Fury asked.

"…Us."

Fury didn't react immediately.

"…Explain."

"He was learning," she said. "Not just the city. Not just people."

A pause.

"…Us."

Fury nodded once.

"…And what did we give him?"

Natasha met his gaze.

"…More than we should have."

Fury turned slightly.

"Lucas Trowman."

The name hung in the air.

"You believe it's real?"

"…Yes."

"…Why?"

"Because it wasn't random."

Fury nodded.

"Keep digging."

A beat.

"…And Romanoff?"

She waited.

"…Next time you see him—don't let him walk away."

Natasha didn't answer immediately.

"…That might not be up to me."

Fury didn't argue.

---

Back in the city—

New York City moved like nothing had changed.

Lucas walked alone.

Calm.

Aware.

"…You've been following for a while."

"That would imply I'm being subtle."

Lucas didn't turn.

"…You're not."

A small pause.

Then he did.

Loki stood there.

Relaxed.

Watching him like before—

But sharper now.

"…You took your time," Lucas said.

"I prefer to observe before I act."

"…You've already done that."

"Yes," Loki said. "But now I understand more."

Lucas studied him.

"…What changed?"

Loki gestured lightly to the city.

"You did."

A pause.

"You're adapting."

Lucas didn't deny it.

"…So are you."

Loki smiled.

"I try not to fall behind."

A brief silence settled.

Then—

"You let them talk to you," Loki said.

"…Yeah."

"Why?"

Lucas glanced at the city.

"…Because they're part of this."

Loki tilted his head.

"And now?"

"…Now I know enough."

That answer carried weight.

Loki stepped slightly closer.

"…That makes you dangerous."

Lucas gave a faint breath.

"…It probably does."

Another pause.

Then Loki's tone shifted.

Smoother.

Sharper.

"…Tell me," Loki said, "what do you think of them?"

Lucas didn't answer immediately.

"…They're building something," he said.

"Fragile," Loki replied instantly.

"…Maybe."

"Not maybe," Loki said. "They pretend they're in control. They're not."

Lucas looked at him.

"…You don't like them."

Loki smiled faintly.

"I understand them."

A pause.

"They crave order," Loki continued. "But they're ruled by chaos."

Lucas considered that.

"…That's not wrong."

Loki's smile grew slightly.

"But they don't deserve what they've built," he added.

That—

Shifted it.

Lucas looked at him more directly now.

"…And you do?"

Loki didn't hesitate.

"I could do better."

That answer was immediate.

Certain.

Lucas held his gaze.

"…That's the difference between us."

Loki's expression didn't change.

"…Oh?"

"You see something unfinished," Lucas said. "And you want to take control of it."

A pause.

"…I see something unfinished and want to understand it."

That—

Landed.

Loki studied him more closely now.

"…Understanding is a luxury," Loki said.

"…So is control."

A brief silence followed.

Then Loki laughed—quiet, sharp.

"…You really are different."

Lucas didn't react.

"You don't want power?" Loki asked.

Lucas thought about it for a second.

"…I already have it."

That answer—

Shifted the air between them.

"…And yet you're here," Loki said.

"…So are you."

That stopped him.

Just for a moment.

Then Loki smiled again.

"…Fair."

Another pause.

"…So what now?" Lucas asked.

Loki stepped slightly to the side, circling just enough to change the angle.

"…Now," he said, "we see what you become."

Lucas watched him.

"…That sounds like you're waiting."

"I am."

"For what?"

Loki's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…For you to decide whether you're a problem."

A small pause.

Lucas didn't move.

Didn't react.

"…And if I am?"

Loki's smile returned.

"…Then things get interesting."

That—

Was the closest thing to a threat.

But it didn't feel like one.

It felt like anticipation.

Lucas gave a faint nod.

"…Alright."

That was it.

No escalation.

No tension breaking.

Just—

Acknowledgment.

They stood there for a moment longer.

Then Loki stepped back.

"…Don't take too long," he said.

And just like that—

He was gone.

No movement.

No trace.

Just—

Gone.

Lucas stood there for a second.

Then looked back at the city.

"…Everyone's watching," he said quietly.

Not annoyed.

Not concerned.

Just—

Aware.

Then he kept walking.

And this time—

There was purpose in it.
