Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — Smiling Among the Dead

The forest did not forgive.

It swallowed sound, distorted direction, and hid danger behind every shadow. The deeper one went, the quieter it became—not peaceful, but suffocating, like the world itself was holding its breath.

Shen Luo walked through it alone.

No rush.

No panic.

Each step deliberate.

---

Leaves crunched softly beneath his feet.

The smell of blood still lingered faintly in the air—his doing.

But he didn't look back.

He never looked back anymore.

---

"…Three kills," he murmured to himself.

His voice was calm, almost thoughtful.

"No anger. No hesitation."

He paused for a moment, eyes lowering slightly.

"…No feeling."

---

For a brief second—

Something flickered.

A memory.

Laughter in the outer sect courtyard.

Carefree voices.

A version of himself that still reacted… still cared.

---

"…Irrelevant."

The thought vanished as quickly as it came.

---

He continued walking.

---

### **The Change**

The forest reflected him now.

Before, he avoided danger.

Now—

He moved toward it.

---

Because danger meant something else.

Opportunity.

---

The system flickered faintly:

> "Karma Threads: 3"

> "Host Mental State: Stable (Deviation increasing)"

---

Shen Luo smiled slightly.

"…Deviation."

"That's a polite way to say I'm changing."

---

He didn't deny it.

Didn't resist it.

---

"…Good."

---

### **Voices in the Distance**

Footsteps.

Whispers.

---

Shen Luo stopped instantly.

---

His body stilled.

Breath slowed.

Presence—gone.

---

Voices grew clearer.

Three… no, four people.

---

"…We shouldn't go deeper," one said nervously.

"Shut up," another snapped. "The rewards are better here."

"And the danger too," a third muttered.

---

Shen Luo moved.

Not away.

Closer.

---

Slowly, silently, he reached the edge of a small clearing.

---

Four outer sect disciples.

Grouped together.

Weapons drawn.

Faces tense.

---

A team.

---

Shen Luo observed quietly.

Eyes sharp.

---

"…They're afraid," he noted.

"Good."

---

### **The First Smile**

He stepped out.

Openly.

---

Leaves rustled.

---

All four turned instantly.

Weapons raised.

---

"Who's there?!"

---

Shen Luo raised his hands slightly.

Not in surrender—

But harmlessness.

---

"…Relax," he said lightly.

"It's just me."

---

They stared.

Confused.

---

"…Shen Luo?" one of them frowned.

"The useless one?"

---

Shen Luo chuckled softly.

"Ah, I'm famous."

---

Tension eased.

Just a little.

---

That was enough.

---

### **The Lie Begins**

"You're alone?" one asked.

---

Shen Luo nodded.

"With great difficulty, yes."

---

A few of them laughed nervously.

---

"…You're lucky to still be alive," another said.

---

Shen Luo tilted his head.

"…Am I?"

---

There was something strange in his tone.

Subtle.

But unsettling.

---

They didn't notice.

Not yet.

---

### **Reading the Group**

Shen Luo's eyes moved across them.

Quick.

Precise.

---

Leader: confident, but cautious

Second: aggressive, impulsive

Third: nervous, follower

Fourth: silent… watching

---

"…Interesting," Shen Luo thought.

---

"Join us," the leader said finally.

"Safer in a group."

---

Shen Luo smiled.

Warm.

Friendly.

---

"…Of course."

---

### **Walking Together**

They moved through the forest.

Together.

---

Shen Luo stayed slightly behind.

Not leading.

Not lagging.

---

Observing.

---

"…Trust forms quickly in fear," he thought.

"Faster than it should."

---

The nervous one spoke again.

"I heard… some people are killing others."

---

Silence fell.

---

The aggressive one scoffed.

"Of course they are. This is a trial."

---

"…Still," the nervous one whispered,

"…it feels wrong."

---

Shen Luo's lips curved slightly.

---

"…Wrong?" he said softly.

---

They looked at him.

---

"What's wrong," Shen Luo continued,

"about surviving?"

---

No one answered.

---

Because no one could.

---

### **The First Crack**

A roar echoed through the forest.

Low.

Deep.

---

The ground trembled slightly.

---

Everyone froze.

---

"…Spirit beast," the leader said quietly.

---

Fear returned.

Sharp.

Immediate.

---

"…We should leave," the nervous one said.

---

The aggressive one shook his head.

"No. If we kill it—"

---

"You'll die," the silent one spoke for the first time.

---

Tension.

Division.

---

Shen Luo watched.

---

"…Now," he thought,

"…they break."

---

### **The Push**

"We don't need to fight it," Shen Luo said calmly.

---

They looked at him.

---

"We just need someone to distract it."

---

Silence.

---

Understanding dawned.

Slow.

Ugly.

---

"…You mean bait," the nervous one whispered.

---

Shen Luo didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

---

### **Eyes Shift**

Everyone looked at each other.

---

Trust—

Gone.

---

Replaced by calculation.

---

"…Not me," the aggressive one said immediately.

---

"Then who?" the leader snapped.

---

No one spoke.

---

Because everyone had the same answer.

---

"…Him," someone said.

---

They all turned.

---

Toward the nervous one.

---

His face went pale.

---

"No… no, wait—"

---

### **Shen Luo Watches**

He said nothing.

Did nothing.

---

Just watched.

---

"…This is how it works," he thought.

---

Not strength.

Not power.

---

Just—

Pressure.

---

And people collapse.

---

### **The Decision**

They grabbed him.

---

He struggled.

Cried.

Begged.

---

"…Please… we're teammates…"

---

No one listened.

---

They threw him forward.

---

Into the trees.

---

Silence.

---

Then—

A scream.

---

Short.

---

Cut off instantly.

---

### **Aftermath**

No one spoke.

---

No one looked at each other.

---

Because they all knew—

What they had just done.

---

Shen Luo finally smiled.

---

Not wide.

Not obvious.

---

But real.

---

"…Efficient," he murmured.

---

### **The Realization**

The silent one looked at him.

Carefully.

---

"…You suggested it."

---

Shen Luo met his gaze.

---

"…And you agreed."

---

Silence.

---

No denial.

---

Because there wasn't one.

---

### **The Truth**

Shen Luo's voice softened.

---

"…This is cultivation."

---

He looked at them.

---

"…Not strength."

"…Not talent."

---

"…But who is willing to go further."

---

The forest grew quiet again.

---

Heavy.

---

Uncomfortable.

---

### **The Next Step**

Shen Luo turned.

---

"…Let's keep moving."

---

As if nothing had happened.

---

And slowly—

They followed.

---

Not because they trusted him.

---

But because—

They didn't know how to refuse anymore.
