Chapter 10 - The City That Shouldn’t Exist

The door was still opening.

Slowly.

Not stuck.

Not resisting.

Just… opening at its own pace.

Like it wasn't in a hurry.

Like it already knew—

They wouldn't stop it.

A cold breath slipped out from the gap.

Not wind.

Something heavier.

Something that carried… presence.

Then the voice came again.

Weak.

Fading.

Familiar.

"…Tony… please…"

Emily's hand flew to her mouth. "That's real. That's not a trick."

John shook his head immediately. "No. No, that's exactly what a trick would sound like."

Chris didn't take his eyes off the opening. "It's designed to sound real."

Bruce stepped forward slightly. "Or it is real."

Silence fell.

All of them looked at Tony.

Because this wasn't just a random voice.

It was someone they knew.

Someone who should never—ever—be here.

Tony's chest tightened.

"…It shouldn't be here," he said quietly.

The gap widened further.

Darkness spilled out.

Not empty darkness.

This one had weight.

Thickness.

Like stepping into it wouldn't just move you forward—

It would take you somewhere else entirely.

"…I'm here… don't leave me…"

The voice trembled again.

Closer now.

More desperate.

Emily stepped forward instinctively. "We can't ignore that!"

Chris grabbed her arm immediately. "We don't even know what that is."

"It sounds real!"

"That's why it's dangerous."

John nodded quickly. "Yeah, this place already messes with our heads. That could be anything copying them."

Bruce looked at Tony again.

"Your call."

Everything went quiet.

Even the air seemed to pause.

Tony stared at the door.

At the darkness.

At the voice pulling at something deep inside him.

Chapter 9 echoed in his mind.

Let go.

Stop controlling everything.

But this—

This wasn't something he could ignore.

"If we walk away…" Emily said softly, "and it's real…"

Tony closed his eyes for a moment.

Then opened them.

Decision made.

"We're going in."

Chris exhaled slowly. "Then we move carefully."

John groaned. "There's no version of this that goes well."

Bruce smirked. "Good."

Tony stepped forward.

And pushed the door open fully.

The world shifted instantly.

Not like before.

Not splitting them.

Not isolating him.

This time—

They stayed together.

But everything else changed.

They weren't in the chamber anymore.

They were outside.

Or at least—

It looked like outside.

A city.

Broken.

Silent.

Frozen in time.

Tony's breath caught.

"…This place…"

Emily turned slowly. "It feels… familiar."

John frowned. "Why does this look like somewhere I've seen before?"

Chris's expression darkened. "Because it's not random."

Bruce stepped forward. "Then what is it?"

No one answered.

Because the voice came again.

Closer.

"…over here…"

Tony turned.

Down the street—

A figure stood.

Far away.

Still.

Waiting.

"Do you see that?" Emily whispered.

Everyone nodded.

The figure didn't move.

Just watched them.

Tony started walking.

The others followed.

Step by step.

The city felt wrong.

Buildings leaned unnaturally.

Streets twisted slightly when you weren't looking directly at them.

Shadows didn't match their sources.

And the silence—

Was absolute.

No wind.

No sound.

No life.

Only them.

And that figure.

As they got closer—

Details formed.

A person.

Head slightly lowered.

Unmoving.

Tony's heart pounded harder.

"…I know that silhouette," he said.

Emily whispered, "Me too…"

John's voice dropped. "No way…"

Chris didn't speak.

Bruce kept walking.

Unbothered.

They stopped a few steps away.

The figure slowly lifted its head.

And Tony froze.

Because the face—

Was exactly who they feared.

"…You're late," the person said.

Emily staggered back. "That's not possible…"

John shook his head rapidly. "No—this is wrong—this is completely wrong—"

Chris stepped forward slightly. "You shouldn't be here."

The figure smiled faintly.

"Yeah," it said. "I figured you'd say that."

Tony stepped forward slowly.

"…How are you here?"

The figure tilted its head.

"Same way you are."

"That's not an answer," Chris snapped.

The figure's eyes shifted to him.

"Neither is anything else in this place."

Silence.

Heavy.

Emily stepped forward, voice trembling. "Are you… really you?"

For a moment—

Something real flickered in the figure's eyes.

"…I think so," it said quietly.

That hesitation—

That uncertainty—

Made everything worse.

John whispered, "This is messed up…"

Tony's instincts screamed.

This wasn't right.

Not fully.

"Tell me something," Tony said.

The figure tilted its head. "What?"

"Something only you would know."

The air tightened.

The figure didn't answer immediately.

Then—

It laughed softly.

"Still testing?"

Tony didn't smile.

"Answer."

The figure's expression changed.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just… empty.

Then it spoke.

But the voice—

Was slightly off.

"Why does it matter?"

That was enough.

Tony stepped back.

"…You're not real."

Emily froze. "Tony—wait—"

The figure's smile widened.

Too wide.

"Define real."

The world shifted violently.

The sky cracked further.

Buildings twisted.

Chris's voice sharpened. "It's breaking!"

John panicked. "What is happening now?!"

The figure stepped forward.

Its body flickered.

Glitched.

"You wanted answers," it said.

Its voice layered—multiple tones overlapping.

"Now you're getting them."

Tony's system exploded.

[Warning: Memory Distortion Detected]

[Entity Classification: Unknown]

Bruce stepped forward. "So we fight?"

"No," Tony said immediately.

Bruce frowned. "Why not?"

"Because that's what it wants."

The figure smiled wider.

"Smart."

Its body shifted further.

Faces appeared across it.

Dozens.

Familiar faces.

Voices they knew.

All layered together.

All wrong.

John backed away. "I don't like this…"

Chris nodded. "It's using us."

"Our memories," Tony said.

The figure laughed.

"Of course I am."

Tony stepped forward.

Slow.

Steady.

"This isn't a fight we win with strength."

Chris understood instantly.

"Then how?"

Tony didn't stop walking.

Even as the world warped harder.

"You're not real," he said again.

"And yet I'm here," it replied.

"You're just pieces," Tony said.

Silence.

A crack.

The figure faltered—just slightly.

Tony stepped closer.

"You exist because we remember."

The air trembled.

"And that means…"

Tony's voice sharpened—

"You don't exist without us."

Everything froze.

For one second—

Perfect stillness.

Then—

The figure screamed.

Not human.

Raw.

Breaking.

The city shattered.

Buildings collapsed into light.

The sky fractured completely.

The figure dissolved—

Piece by piece.

Until nothing remained.

Silence.

Tony stood still.

Breathing slowly.

The others looked around.

The world reformed.

Back to the Gate Chamber.

The door—

Gone.

Like it never existed.

John dropped to the ground. "I'm done. I'm actually done."

Emily hugged herself. "That felt too real…"

Chris looked at Tony.

"You figured it out."

Tony shook his head.

"Not fast enough."

Bruce smirked. "But you ended it."

The system activated.

[Trial Complete]

[Cognitive Resistance Increased]

Tony exhaled.

But something still felt off.

Incomplete.

Again.

Chris noticed.

"You feel it too?"

Tony nodded.

"Yeah."

Before anyone could say more—

The chamber trembled.

All the doors returned.

One by one.

But this time—

They were all open.

Dark.

Waiting.

John stared. "That's worse. That's definitely worse."

Bruce grinned slightly. "More choices."

Chris shook his head.

"No… this time…"

"…we're not choosing."

Tony felt it.

That presence again.

Stronger than ever.

Watching.

Then—

All the doors slammed shut.

Except one.

At the far end.

Slowly opening.

Darkness inside.

Deeper than before.

Then—

A voice came.

Not familiar.

Not human.

Ancient.

Cold.

"You've passed the surface trials…"

Tony's eyes narrowed.

"Now come…"

The darkness shifted.

Something massive moved within it.

"…and face what lies beneath your existence."

A chill ran through all of them.

Even Bruce didn't smile.

Chris whispered, "That's not a test anymore…"

Tony stepped forward.

Slow.

Steady.

"…No," he said quietly.

"It's something else."

The voice echoed—

Almost amused.

"Good."

The door opened wider.

And something inside—

Opened its eyes.

Far beyond the tower…

Beyond the broken sky…

Something ancient watched.

Silent.

Smiling.

"The awakening is accelerating."

A pause.

Then—

"Prepare the descent… of the last king."

Back at the door—

Tony stopped at the threshold.

For the first time—

Not from fear.

Not from doubt.

But from something deeper.

A realization.

Every trial so far—

Was preparing him.

Not to survive.

Not to fight.

But to become something.

Something this tower had been waiting for.

Tony's fingers curled slightly.

And one thought echoed in his mind—

clearer than ever before:

If this wasn't a test anymore…

Then what exactly was waiting for him inside?
