The colony had moments like this.
Strangely quiet ones.
Not safe—never safe—but temporarily still, like the world had forgotten to throw something at them for a few minutes.
Megumi walked ahead as usual, scanning rooftops and alleyways.
Hana and Angel followed at a steady pace behind Takeru.
Takeru's steps slowed slightly.
Not because of danger.
Because of curiosity.
He glanced sideways toward Hana.
Then spoke.
"…So what do you do for fun?"
Megumi paused mid-step.
"…What?"
Hana blinked.
"…Fun?"
Angel's voice followed immediately, dry and analytical.
"…That is not a relevant survival variable."
Takeru kept walking.
"…Still a valid question."
Silence followed for a moment.
Hana looked slightly thrown off.
"…I don't know if 'fun' is the right word for anything here."
Megumi muttered.
"…That's the correct answer, unfortunately."
Takeru continued anyway, tone unchanged.
"…Clarification: outside combat and navigation tasks. Non-essential activity."
Hana hesitated.
Then shrugged slightly.
"…I used to… read, I guess."
Angel added:
"…Before integration."
Takeru nodded once.
"…Noted."
A brief pause.
Then Megumi spoke again, more grounded.
"…We don't have downtime like that here."
Takeru glanced forward.
"…Observed."
But he didn't stop there.
His voice stayed calm, but there was something slightly more… human in the question.
"…Does nothing else occur between engagements?"
Hana looked at him again.
This time longer than before.
"…Sometimes we just move. Survive. Wait for the next encounter."
Angel added softly:
"…This system does not incentivize rest."
Takeru exhaled slightly through his nose.
"…Inefficient."
Megumi gave him a sideways glance.
"…You're just now realizing that?"
Takeru didn't respond directly.
Instead—
he looked at Hana again.
"…Your behavioral patterns suggest adaptation beyond survival necessity."
Hana blinked.
"…What does that mean?"
Takeru answered simply.
"…You still observe non-essential stimuli."
A pause.
Angel spoke first.
"…He is correct."
Hana sighed slightly.
"…That's not fun. That's just habit."
Takeru nodded.
"…Functionally similar."
Silence returned briefly.
But it wasn't empty this time.
It felt like something was being slowly acknowledged between them—without anyone naming it properly.
Megumi exhaled.
"…We should focus on Higuruma."
Takeru nodded.
"…Confirmed."
Hana adjusted her pace slightly to match them better.
"…He's still in this sector."
Angel added:
"…But he does not remain stationary."
Takeru responded immediately.
"…Then movement prediction required."
And just like that—
the conversation shifted back to the game.
But the question lingered anyway.
Not answered.
Just sitting there.
Like something the Culling Game couldn't fully erase yet.
