Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — Almost

The distance didn't hold.

Not for long.

The night felt quieter than usual.

Too quiet.

Lena noticed it the moment she stepped inside.

No staff.

No movement.

No noise.

Just silence.

She didn't like it.

"Hello?" she called lightly.

No answer.

A pause.

"Looking for someone?"

His voice.

Close.

Too close.

Lena turned.

Ethan was already there.

Standing just behind her.

She hadn't heard him move.

Of course she hadn't.

"You're home early," she said.

Calm.

Steady.

But her pulse was slightly off.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

His gaze moved over her.

Slow.

Measured.

Unapologetic.

"You noticed," he said.

He stepped closer.

The space disappeared.

"Something's different," he added.

Not a question.

Lena didn't step back.

"Is there?" she asked.

A pause.

Then his hand lifted.

Slow.

This time, he didn't stop.

His fingers brushed her jaw.

Light.

Deliberate.

Breaking another rule.

Lena's breath caught, just for a second.

Then steadied.

"You're crossing lines again," she said quietly.

Ethan didn't move his hand.

"If I were," he said,

"you would've stopped me."

A beat.

Lena met his eyes.

"And if I don't?" she asked.

Silence.

Dangerous.

Unstable.

Ethan stepped closer.

Now there was no space left.

His thumb traced along her jaw.

Slow.

Intentional.

Testing.

Her reaction.

Her limits.

Her control.

"Then I won't stop," he said quietly.

That shifted something.

Not outside.

Inside.

For both of them.

Lena didn't move.

Didn't pull away.

Didn't give in.

Balance.

Perfect.

Fragile.

Her voice softened.

"Careful," she murmured,

"or you'll forget this is still a deal."

Ethan's gaze dropped.

To her lips.

This time not subtle.

Not hidden.

Clear.

Intentional.

And she saw it.

Of course she did.

A second passed.

Then another.

No one moved.

Until Lena did.

Just slightly.

Not away.

Closer.

That was the mistake.

Or the decision.

Ethan reacted instantly.

His hand tightened at her jaw.

Not enough to hurt.

Just enough to hold.

Then he leaned in.

Their breaths collided.

Warm.

Heavy with tension.

Close.

Too close.

A fraction of an inch.

That was all.

That was everything.

Lena felt it.

The shift.

The loss of control.

Not his.

Hers.

For the first time,

she almost didn't stop it.

Almost.

That was the problem.

Her hand came up.

Not to push him away.

But to stop him.

Right there.

Between them.

"Ethan."

His name.

Soft.

But enough.

He froze.

Just for a second.

Then he stepped back.

Abrupt.

Controlled.

Forced.

His jaw tightened.

His gaze darker now.

More dangerous.

"That won't happen again," he said.

The same words.

Different meaning.

Lena watched him.

This time not entirely calm.

"Make sure of it," she replied.

But her voice was just slightly softer.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

And that made it worse.

Ethan turned away first.

A mistake.

Because now he needed distance.

Space.

Control.

But it was already slipping.

Behind him, Lena stood still.

Her fingers curled slightly into her palms.

Not from fear.

From restraint.

And the lingering heat of his touch.

The line had been crossed.

Not physically.

But something else had.

And neither of them

was going back.
