Chapter 23 - Chapter Twenty-Three: The Trap Closes

The industrial district looked dead at night.

Most of the factories had been abandoned years ago. Rusted gates, broken windows, and empty warehouses lined the streets like forgotten skeletons of the past.

The only sound was the wind moving through loose metal sheets and old wires.

It was the perfect place for an ambush.

Marcus sat inside the parked car with the engine off, watching the empty road ahead.

Beside him, the rifle rested across his lap.

Darius stood a few meters away behind a concrete barrier, scanning the dark street carefully.

Malik leaned against the hood of another car across the road, staring down at his phone.

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Marcus checked his watch.

"They should be close," he said quietly through the small radio.

Darius's voice came back.

"Street's still clear."

Malik didn't respond.

His eyes moved slowly across the area.

The abandoned rail crossing sat just ahead of them.

Old warning lights hung crookedly beside the tracks, their glass cracked and faded.

No trains had used this line in years.

But the narrow road crossing it forced cars to slow down.

That was the weakness.

Two vehicles were positioned across nearby side streets. Once Reed's convoy passed the crossing, there would be no easy way out.

Marcus clicked the radio again.

"You sure about the timing?"

Malik finally answered.

"Yes."

Marcus leaned back in the seat.

"Then we wait."

Across the city, Reed's convoy moved through the quiet streets.

Two black SUVs rolled through the dark industrial district with steady speed.

Inside the first vehicle, Carter watched the road carefully.

"Area's empty," he said.

Reed sat in the back seat, calm as ever.

His eyes scanned the buildings as they passed.

Too quiet.

He noticed it immediately.

Industrial districts were never completely silent.

There were always night workers.

Security patrols.

Random traffic.

Tonight there was nothing.

Reed leaned slightly forward.

"How far from the crossing?"

"Two minutes," Carter replied.

Reed nodded slowly.

His instincts were whispering again.

Something wasn't right.

But he didn't say anything.

Instead, he simply watched.

Back at the rail crossing, Marcus suddenly leaned forward.

Headlights.

Two small beams appeared in the distance.

His grip tightened on the rifle.

"They're here," he whispered into the radio.

Darius immediately shifted position behind the concrete barrier.

Malik slowly straightened up.

His eyes locked onto the approaching lights.

For months, everything had been building toward this moment.

The strategist.

The planning.

The waiting.

Now Reed was finally driving into the trap.

Marcus spoke quietly into the radio again.

"Stay sharp."

The headlights grew brighter.

The first SUV rolled slowly down the road toward the crossing.

Marcus's heart pounded.

He lifted the rifle and rested it against the window frame.

Through the scope, he could see the driver clearly.

Not Reed.

The second vehicle appeared behind it.

That one carried Reed.

Marcus knew it.

Darius whispered through the radio.

"Second car."

Malik stepped closer to the road.

The moment was here.

Everything depended on the next few seconds.

Inside the SUV, Carter's eyes moved across the dark buildings.

"Still clear," he said.

But Reed noticed something.

A parked car.

Then another.

Strange positions.

Too deliberate.

His instincts screamed now.

"Slow down," Reed said quietly.

Carter eased the vehicle's speed.

The convoy approached the rail crossing.

Reed's eyes moved across the shadows.

And then he saw him.

Malik.

Standing near the road.

Waiting.

Reed's eyes narrowed.

"So that's what this is," he murmured.

Carter followed his gaze.

His expression changed instantly.

"Boss—"

Back outside, Marcus spoke sharply.

"Do it."

Malik raised the gun.

Through the windshield of the SUV, he could see Reed sitting in the back seat.

The man who had tortured Darius.

The man who had threatened Malik's son.

The man who had built an empire through fear.

This was the moment.

All he had to do was pull the trigger.

But his finger hesitated.

For just a second.

Marcus noticed immediately.

"Malik," he whispered.

The hesitation lasted only a moment.

But it was enough.

Marcus made his decision.

He lifted the rifle.

And pulled the trigger.

The sound of the gunshot exploded through the empty industrial district.

Glass shattered.

The SUV swerved violently.

Darius ducked behind the barrier as chaos erupted.

Marcus lowered the rifle slowly.

Smoke rose from the barrel.

Across the road, Malik stared at the convoy in shock.

The vehicle slammed into the side of the rail crossing barrier and stopped.

For a moment…

Everything was silent again.

No movement.

No sound.

Marcus stepped out of the car slowly.

He looked toward the wrecked SUV.

"You should've taken the shot," he said quietly.

Malik didn't answer.

His eyes were fixed on the damaged vehicle.

Because none of them knew yet…

Whether Reed was alive.

Or dead.
