Chapter 10 - Consumed By Bitterness

"Yes... you evil things, yes!" Barka's voice rang out, fierce and defiant, echoing through the darkened cavern. "This is what you deserve; I promise that as long as I'm alive, you'll know no rest!" She spat at the creatures surrounding her, her heart pounding with a mix of anger and fear. Turning her back on them, she felt a surge of power and determination—until a chilling realization struck her.

Using its last remaining strength, one of the creatures raised its jagged claws, aiming to pierce into her back. In a moment of selflessness, Xiao Xi threw himself between Barka and the deadly strike, taking the blow meant for her. Blood spilled from his mouth, a dark stream that stained his lips and dripped onto the ground. The claw had gone deep, piercing through his armor and plunging into his stomach.

Time seemed to freeze as the creature slowly yanked its claws free, leaving Xiao Xi to collapse like a broken doll. Barka rushed forward, her heart racing, desperate to catch him. The dark shadow that had consumed her faded as she returned to her true self, cradling Xiao Xi's limp body in her arms. Bitterness flowed through her veins, a toxic reminder of her failure. Guilt consumed her entirely, washing over her like a relentless tide. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she realized the truth: all her friends were at death's door, and it was her desire—the lust for power she had failed to suppress—that had led them here.

For a long, quiet moment, she stood still, the weight of her sorrow anchoring her to the ground. Bitterness lingered in her heart, pain and fear entwined in a way that was impossible to describe. In that blissfully quiet moment, time felt slower; the world seemed peaceful, as if it were holding its breath. It felt like her worries had vanished. But then reality crashed back in, a brutal reminder of her situation. Nite and Doushi lay lifeless on the ground, their faces pale and devoid of life.

The creatures had been suppressed and sealed, but the cost had been high. Xiao Xi continued to lay in her arms, bloodied and unconscious from his wounds. The weight of her reality shattered her fragile composure.

With a groan that echoed her despair, Barka lifted both herself and the unconscious Xiao Xi onto her back, supporting Nite and Doushi as best she could. Each step felt like a dagger to her spine; her body screamed in protest, but she had no choice. This was her duty, the price of her actions. She was only paying her debt, suffering for the pain she had caused.

As she staggered away from the cave, each step felt like an eternity. She groaned, her heart slamming against her ribs, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Exhaustion clawed at her, but she pressed on, driven by a desperate need to save her friends. Upon reaching a mile from the cave, her legs finally gave out beneath her, and she collapsed onto the cold, hard ground.

Her heart raced in her chest, each beat a reminder of how far she had pushed herself. Just as she felt hope slipping away, the sound of life thriving brought a flicker of light back into her heart. She turned her head toward the direction of the sound, her eyes widening as she spotted a river.

The river flowed gracefully, its small splashes telling stories of experiences woven into its vast array of memories. It shimmered in the moonlight, a glimmering sight that mingled with the hushed symphony of peace and quiet. Its clear water promised to quench the thirst of many lost souls.

Despite being overtaken by exhaustion, Barka felt a surge of energy as she sprinted toward the river. She knelt at the bank, cupping her hands to take a few desperate sips. The cool water soothed her parched throat, washing away some of the fatigue that clung to her. Without hesitation, she dove into the river, the refreshing water enveloping her like a long-lost friend.

As she submerged, the water eased her pain, calming the storm within her. She splashed playfully, a sign of life in this realm of darkness, the coolness refreshing her skin and spirit. It was a moment of pure joy, a fleeting escape from the horrors she had faced.

After a while of cooling in the water, Barka turned back to her friends. With gentle determination, she lifted Nite, Doushi, and Xiao Xi, placing them one by one into the river. The moment their bodies touched the water, something miraculous happened.

Their souls stirred.

It was as if the river itself had breathed life back into them, like a hero arriving just in time to save them from death's cold embrace. The magic of the water flowed through their veins, reviving them in a way that felt almost divine. Slowly, their eyes fluttered open, color returning to their cheeks. Laughter bubbled up from them, soft and childlike, as they splashed and played in the river's gentle embrace.

For the first time since leaving the Netherworld, they could breathe freely again. The river's melody soothed their minds, cleansing away the darkness that had clung so tightly to their spirits. They rested in the comfort of the river, listening to its enchanting melodies, their minds finally clear of the chaos that had plagued them.

As the night enveloped them, the stars twinkled like distant lanterns in the sky, watching over them. But the peace was fragile and fleeting.

The friends quickly suppressed their urge to linger, knowing the path ahead was still fraught with danger. They had faced too much already; they needed to move forward. With renewed strength, they saddled up to leave the river, their bodies calm and their minds loosened.

However, as they stepped back onto the land, their minds suddenly went blank again. The vast expanse stretched endlessly before them, swallowed by darkness. Everywhere they turned, the landscape felt the same—an endless loop of shadows and despair. Confusion gnawed at their hearts; they didn't know where they came from or where to turn.

Things became worse as malevolent and benevolent spirits began to appear, glowing ominously in the dark. Their voices echoed like haunting whispers, taunting their very souls, their soft glow casting eerie shadows that seemed to dance around them. The spirits twisted and turned, their forms shifting like smoke, and the friends felt an overwhelming sense of dread.

They were lost.

Trapped in a realm where hope was a fading ember, and every step seemed to lead them further into the unknown. The air thickened with uncertainty, and Barka's heart raced as they stood together, surrounded by the flickering lights of the spirits.

"Stay close," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the cacophony of whispers. "We'll find our way."

But deep down, she feared the darkness would consume them all.
