Chapter 33 - Itachi, The Exam Begins

Late at night, silence blanketed the house.

Moonlight streamed through the window, gently illuminating Rin's sleeping face.

Uchiha Mo carefully tucked the blanket around her, then stepped out of the room without a sound.

He did not return to his own room.

Instead, he stood in the middle of the courtyard and spoke coldly to an empty corner.

"You've been following me all this way. Come out."

The moment his words fell—

A figure emerged from the shadows.

The boy wore no mask.

His delicate features were calm, yet those deep black eyes carried a maturity far beyond his years.

The ANBU uniform gleamed faintly under the moonlight.

Uchiha Itachi.

Mo glanced at his attire and let out a faint, mocking chuckle.

"Wearing ANBU gear inside Uchiha territory… are you declaring your stance?"

Itachi ignored the question.

"Father told me some things."

Mo replied indifferently, "So?"

"I will investigate the truth behind the Nine-Tails Incident," Itachi said.

Then his gaze sharpened.

"Father said you know far more than this. Tell me."

"Oh?" Mo smiled faintly.

"Then tell me… in what capacity are you asking that question?"

His eyes deliberately flicked to the ANBU uniform.

His tone carried a subtle edge of ridicule.

"As the heir of the Uchiha… or as an ANBU captain?"

The courtyard fell silent.

The air itself seemed to freeze.

"…Does it matter?"

"Of course it matters."

"Different identities mean different stances."

"And stance determines what kind of truth a person is willing to accept."

They stood facing each other beneath the moon.

One in Police Force uniform.

One in ANBU attire.

A perfect reflection of the fracture within the Uchiha.

"…You still can't see beyond the narrow perspective of the clan."

Itachi's voice was calm, but his gaze was sharp—almost condescending.

"I've already met Uchiha Shūjin."

"I even tested him."

A brief pause.

"For a short time… I couldn't defeat him."

(Of course—without using the Mangekyō.)

"If I used it, he wouldn't stand a chance."

"But even so…"

"It's shocking."

Itachi's eyes shifted toward the house.

"I never expected to find anomalies like you within the clan."

He paused, then added quietly:

"Three of them… including Uchiha Obito."

For the first time—

Confusion surfaced in the mind of the so-called greatest Uchiha prodigy.

Mo.

Shūjin.

Rin.

Obito.

Even his own father…

Perhaps—

The Uchiha were far more complex than he had ever believed.

The tension between them subtly shifted.

"You've done well."

The sudden praise broke the silence.

Mo raised an eyebrow slightly.

Itachi continued:

"The ANBU surveillance on the Uchiha has been lifted."

"Obito's existence has created an opportunity for reconciliation between the clan and the village."

He lifted his chin slightly.

"I will investigate everything."

"And if what you've said is true…"

His voice turned cold.

"I will make Uchiha Obito pay the price."

In Itachi's mind—

Everything Mo had done—

Revealing Obito, nurturing Rin, Shūjin's strength—

All pointed toward one goal:

Preserving peace.

Just like himself.

Two different paths—

Leading to the same outcome.

Without waiting for a response—

Itachi glanced at Mo one last time.

Then his figure faded into the night.

The ANBU uniform disappeared into the darkness—

As if reminding Mo—

That even without surveillance—

The fate of the Uchiha still lay in the hands of a few.

...

"…Idiot."

Mo muttered under his breath.

Coming all the way here—

Just to say something so self-righteous.

Typical Itachi.

But Mo didn't mind.

This had been expected.

In fact—

He had deliberately allowed the information to reach Itachi through Fugaku.

To give him a choice.

Loyalty to the Hokage—

Or loyalty to the Uchiha.

Tonight's conversation—

Was a warning.

"…Make the right choice."

"Otherwise… I won't hold back."

A cool breeze swept through the courtyard.

Mo turned and walked back inside.

Tomorrow—

Was what truly mattered.

Rin's graduation exam.

As for Itachi—

That decision was his alone.

...

Morning light crept over Konoha.

The special early graduation exam—

Was far more difficult than the standard one.

At the edge of the training ground—

The atmosphere was tense.

Several chūnin stood as proctors and record keepers.

But more figures watched from the sidelines.

Most notable—

Uchiha Fugaku.

Standing quietly beneath a tree, his presence alone added weight to the exam.

Nearby—

A few well-informed jōnin observed with folded arms.

And farther away—

A masked ANBU leaned against the railing.

Hatake Kakashi.

His presence almost merged with the shadows.

Beyond the field—

Even more eyes were watching.

Through various means.

This—

Was no ordinary exam.

Uchiha Rin stood at the center.

Her face was calm.

No excitement.

No fear.

Only stillness.

The chief examiner cleared his throat.

"Uchiha Rin. Your early graduation exam begins now."

"First test: Ninjutsu."

"Demonstrate the Clone Technique, Substitution Technique, and Transformation Technique."

"And one additional C-rank or higher technique."

Rin nodded slightly.

"Clone Technique."

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Three perfect clones appeared instantly.

No flaws.

No delay.

"Substitution Technique."

Before the words fully settled—

A wooden shuriken was thrown toward her.

Just as it was about to strike—

Poof!

A burst of smoke.

The shuriken hit a log.

Thud!

Rin—

Had already reappeared several meters away.

Flawless timing.

Near-instant hand seals.

"Transformation Technique."

Another puff of smoke—

She transformed into the examiner himself.

Not just appearance—

Posture.

Presence.

Even subtle expressions.

Perfect.

"Lastly," the examiner said,

"please demonstrate your chosen technique."

Rin stood still for a moment.

Then—

Her gaze sharpened slightly.

The real performance—

Was about to begin.
