Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Price of Divinity

[LEVEL: 40]

[HUMANITY: LOCKED (VOID)]

[CURRENT FATE UNITS: 7,000]

[SOUL STABILITY: 32% (DANGEROUSLY LOW)]

The aftermath of the [Chronos-Rip] was not silence. It was the sound of a world struggling to breathe.

In a ten-mile radius around the hidden entrance to the Void Asylum, the forest had ceased to exist. What was once a lush, green canopy of ancient Ironoaks was now a circular desert of fine, grey ash. There were no birds, no insects, not even the sound of wind. Kyle had not just killed the life there; he had consumed the "time" assigned to that land.

Kyle stood in the center of this grey wasteland, his body trembling with a cold, hollow energy. His white hair had turned a translucent silver, floating slightly as if gravity no longer applied to him. The runic patterns on his arms weren't just tattoos anymore—they were deep, glowing fissures in his skin that leaked a faint, purple mist.

[WARNING: HOST BODY IS BECOMING A 'CAUSAL ANOMALY'.]

[PHYSICAL FORM IS DESYNCHRONIZING FROM THE CURRENT TIMELINE.]

"You look like a god, Kyle," Malakar's ghost whispered, his spectral form now almost solid as he fed on the excess energy leaking from Kyle's soul. "But a god without a temple is just a ghost with a bigger appetite. Your father is right about one thing... this place is becoming a grave."

"Shut up," Kyle hissed, his voice echoing with a strange, metallic reverb.

He turned back toward the entrance of the Void Asylum. He needed to check on Mia. The "Mirror-Synergy" notification had been pulsing in the corner of his vision like a warning light.

As he stepped back into the obsidian dome, the temperature dropped by forty degrees. In the center of the darkness, his sister Mia was no longer lying still. She was floating three feet off the ground, encased in a sphere of jagged, crystalline mirrors. Every mirror showed a different version of the future—some where Kyle was a king, others where he was a pile of ash, and one... one where he was the monster that destroyed the world.

[TENANT 'MIA' HAS AWAKENED.]

[NEW CLASS DETECTED: FATE-REFLECTOR (LEGENDARY).]

"Kyle?"

The voice didn't come from Mia. It came from the mirrors.

The crystalline sphere shattered into a thousand shards of moonlight. Mia landed softly on the obsidian floor. Her eyes, once brown and full of warmth, were now silver pools that reflected everything except the person standing in front of her. When she looked at Kyle, she didn't see her brother; she saw a swirling storm of black and red threads.

"Mia, you're awake," Kyle said, taking a step forward.

Mia flinched, her hands flying up to cover her eyes. "Don't! Your threads... they are so loud, Kyle. They are screaming. Who did you kill? How many lives are you wearing?"

Kyle froze. The rejection from his father was one thing, but from Mia—the reason he had started this journey—it felt like a Fate-Rip to his own heart.

"I did it for you," Kyle said, his voice cracking for the first time. "The Church... they were going to turn you into a battery. I saved you."

"Is this being saved?" Mia asked, gesturing to the dark, hollow dimension they were trapped in. "We are hiding in a hole in reality, Kyle. Father won't even look at his own hands because they feel 'wrong'. And you... you don't even have a reflection anymore."

Kyle looked at a shard of mirror on the floor. It showed the obsidian dust, the dark sky, and the floating hair—but it did not show him. To the laws of reflection, Kyle no longer existed.

"She's ungrateful, Kyle," Malakar's ghost hissed, circling Mia like a vulture. "She doesn't understand that to save a soul, you must burn the world that tries to take it."

"Get away from her!" Kyle roared at the ghost.

His sudden outburst caused the entire Void Asylum to shake. A surge of crimson energy erupted from his eye, cracking the obsidian floor. Mia screamed, and Arthur, Kyle's father, rushed from the shadows to pull her away.

"Look at yourself, Kyle!" Arthur shouted, his voice filled with a mixture of terror and grief. "You are becoming the very thing we feared. You aren't our son anymore. You are just a vessel for that... that curse!"

"A curse?" Kyle laughed, a cold, bitter sound. "This 'curse' is the only reason your heart is still beating, Father. This 'curse' broke a Saint's staff and tore a hole in the sky. If you want to go back to being 'human', go ahead. Step outside. The Silver Knights are waiting with their pyres."

Arthur went silent, his shoulders slumped in defeat. He knew Kyle was right, and that was the cruelest part of their new reality.

[SYSTEM ALERT: MASSIVE ENERGY SPIKE DETECTED.]

[ARCH-INQUISITOR VANE HAS ACTIVATED: 'THE EYE OF THE SEVENTH HEAVEN'.]

[LOCATION LOCK: 99.9% COMPLETE.]

The roof of the Void Asylum suddenly turned transparent. The dark sky was gone, replaced by a massive, golden eye that covered the entire firmament. It was looking directly at them.

Vane hadn't just scanned the area; he had sacrificed ten thousand "Faith-Threads" from the Church's followers to cast a spell that could see through the Void.

"He's here," Kyle whispered.

[WARNING: THE VOID ASYLUM IS BEING PULLED INTO THE PHYSICAL PLANE.]

[FORCED MATERIALIZATION IN 600 SECONDS.]

"Kyle, what's happening?" Mia cried out, clutching their father's arm.

"The hideout is failing," Kyle said, his star-shaped pupil spinning with a frantic, desperate speed. "Vane is pulling us back into the world. He wants to finish what he started."

Kyle looked at his family. He had ten minutes. In ten minutes, a Level 68 Saint would descend upon them with the full might of the Silver Church.

"I can't hide you anymore," Kyle said, his voice dropping into a solemn, heavy tone. "The only way to save you now... is to end the hunt. I have to kill a Saint."

Arthur looked at Kyle in horror. "You're just a boy! You can't kill a God!"

"I'm not a boy," Kyle said, his body beginning to dissolve into a cloud of crimson mist. "I am a Scavenger. And a Saint has a lot of fate to lose."

[QUEST UPDATED: THE LAST STAND OF OAKHAVEN.]

[OBJECTIVE: DEFEAT ARCH-INQUISITOR VANE.]

[FAILURE CONDITION: TOTAL ERASURE OF THE KYLE BLOODLINE.]

Kyle turned toward the exit. He didn't look back at his father's tears or his sister's silver eyes. He couldn't afford to be human anymore. He needed every ounce of the "Void" to survive what was coming.

"Malakar," Kyle thought as he stepped out into the golden glare of the Church's spell. "Give me everything. Every forbidden knot, every suicidal spell you know. I don't care if it burns my soul to ash."

"Now you're talking like a true Devourer," the ghost laughed, his form merging with Kyle's shadow. "Let's show this 'Saint' what happens when you try to cage a glitch."

As Kyle stood in the center of the ash-desert, the golden eye in the sky began to descend. The air became so heavy that the ground began to crack. And in the center of the light, Arch-Inquisitor Vane appeared, his new staff glowing with a light that promised an end to all things.

"End of the line, Scavenger," Vane's voice boomed from the heavens.

Kyle looked up, his Crimson Eye glowing with a dark, defiant hunger. "No, Vane. It's just the beginning of the feast."
