Chapter 35 - The Inventory of Lies

The silence that followed Kianna's question was thick, suffocating, and punctuated only by the low, mechanical rattle of the air conditioner. Layla stared at the plastic cup in her hand, the cheap liquid inside rippling slightly from the tremor in her fingers. Every eye in the room was a physical weight pressing against her, waiting to see if she would lift the cup to her lips, waiting for the silent confession that would tear the rest of the trip apart.

But she didn't drink.

Instead, she set the cup down on the carpeted floor with a deliberate, trembling slowness. When she looked up, the defensive wall she had spent months building was completely gone, replaced by a sharp, defensive fire.

"Why would you ask that, Kianna?" Layla's voice was dangerously low, cutting through the stagnant air of the small room. "Seriously, can you not read a room? Why are you constantly trying to cause problems? Everything was fine... everyone was doing completely fine until you decided to show up and insert yourself into this."

Kianna didn't flinch. She leaned back against the edge of Kofi's unmade bed, a cold, mocking smile playing on her lips as she looked down at Layla. "The only reason everything seemed like it was fine, Layla, was because nobody else had the spine to call you out on your bullshit. Everyone here is tiptoeing around you like you're made of glass." She let out a sharp, bitter laugh, her eyes flicking briefly toward Jade before locking back onto Layla. "How hard is it, really? How hard is it to just pick one boy and stay loyal to them instead of trying to be a whore?"

The word hit the room like a physical blow.

Before Sarah could reach out to grab her arm, Layla vanished from her spot on the floor. She dashed across the small space, her sneakers skidding on the carpet as she lunged toward Kianna, her hands clenched into fists.

"What are you trying to insinuate by that?" Layla screamed, her voice cracking under the weight of the raw fury pouring out of her. "Say it to my face! What exactly are you trying to say?"

"Layla, stop! Hey, look at me, stop!" Sarah scrambled up from the floor, throwing her entire weight between the two girls, her arms wrapping tightly around Layla's torso to pull her backward. Kianna didn't move, though her breathing had gone shallow, her eyes wide as Sarah pushed Layla back toward the center of the room. "Don't do this, it's not worth it, just breathe," Sarah muttered frantically, her own heart hammering against Layla's back.

In the corner by the door, Liam sat entirely frozen. The ice pack had slipped from his swollen jaw, resting forgotten on his knee. He looked completely lost, his eyes darting from Layla's flushed, angry face to Kianna's cold expression, and finally to Jade, who was still standing by the window, silently watching the wreckage unfold.

A suffocating wave of confusion and clarity washed over Liam all at once. He had spent the entire trip, the entire past few months, believing he was doing right by Layla. He had worked extra shifts, planned the perfect excursions, brought her breakfast, and defended her on the beach until his hands were bloody. But looking at her now, the truth was beginning to form a sickening knot in his stomach.

She wasn't thriving in their "new era." She was hurting. And she was hurting because she wanted to be with someone else. The realization hit him with a brutal, paralyzing force... he was just the second option. The safe choice. Jade had practically screamed it at him on the sand, and now Kianna was saying it out loud. What did she mean by staying loyal to one person? What happened in Montreal that I didn't see? The questions bounced around his head, each one heavier than the last, suffocating him.

Kianna reached behind her, her fingers wrapping around the brass handle of Kofi's door. She pulled it open, the bright, sterile light of the hallway cutting a sharp line across the dark room. "I'm done playing these stupid games," she spat out, stepping over the threshold without looking back. The door remained ajar, a silent invitation for the rest of the illusion to dissolve.

Liam stood up slowly, his movements stiff, like an old man's. He didn't look at Jade, and he barely looked at Layla. "I'm going to retire early," he said, his voice flat, completely stripped of the "Golden Boy" warmth that usually defined him.

"Liam, wait," Layla choked out, breaking away from Sarah's grip and rushing toward him as he stepped into the hallway. She reached for his arm, her eyes desperate, filled with tears she refused to let fall. "Please, just listen to me... it's not what you think. Kianna is just trying to mess with us, she's just angry because…"

Liam stopped walking, but he didn't turn around to face her. He just looked down at the carpeted hallway stretching out toward the elevators. "I'm going to bed, Layla," he interrupted, his voice hollow, offering no room for negotiation. "I'll see you in the morning."

Jade left immediately after, his heavy footsteps echoing down the corridor as he headed toward the stairs, not even bothering with the elevator. The remaining students from the other group followed suit, slipping out of the room in uncomfortable pairs until the heavy wooden door finally clicked shut, sealing out the chaotic static of the main trio.

Suddenly, the room was vast.

Sarah slumped down onto the edge of the mattress, letting out a long, ragged breath that she felt like she'd been holding since they first boarded the catamaran that morning. Kofi stood by the small desk, running a hand through his hair, looking at the empty cups scattered across the floor.

"Well," Kofi said, a faint, weary smile tugging at his lips as he walked over and sat down on the floor right in front of her. "That was definitely one way to spend a lockdown."

Sarah let out a weak, genuine chuckle, her shoulders finally dropping. "I am so sorry you had to witness that. My friends are... a lot."

"It's fine," Kofi replied, leaning his head back against the side of the bed, his dark eyes resting on her face. "To be honest, it's kind of nice to know I'm not the only one completely surrounded by a circus. Sometimes I look at my group and I feel totally lost, you know?"

"Yeah," Sarah whispered, looking down at her hands. "I know exactly what you mean. I've felt lost for about three days straight now."

They shared a quiet, understanding laugh, a small pocket of peace in the middle of a war zone. Kofi shifted slightly, his knee brushing against hers, but neither of them pulled away. The silence between them wasn't heavy like the one with Layla and Liam; it felt light, like a relief.

"You know," Kofi said, his voice dropping into a softer, lower register as he reached up, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "You look really good tonight, Sarah. Even with all the madness going on."

Sarah's breath hitched, her heart doing a completely different kind of flutter than it had earlier. "Kofi..."

"I really want to kiss you right now," he murmured, his thumb lingering against her jawline. But before she could answer, he let out a nervous breath and started to pull his hand back, a sudden look of hesitation crossing his face. "Sorry... I should probably look away. I don't want to rush things if…"

Sarah didn't let him finish the sentence.

She reached forward, her fingers wrapping firmly around his jaw, and turned his face back to hers. Before he could say another word, she leaned down and pressed her lips against his. The kiss was warm, honest, and entirely free of the secrets and lies that were currently tearing the upper floors of the resort apart. For the first time all trip, Sarah wasn't a bystander in someone else's drama... she was exactly where she wanted to be.
