Chapter 3 - Chapter Four: The Rules of the House

The morning light filtered through tall Venetian windows, casting golden stripes across the polished marble floors of the Moretti mansion.

Elena stirred in the guest room Lucian had assigned her, the sheets smooth but heavy with the unfamiliar scent of wealth and power. She sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes, trying to piece together reality.

I'm really here.

The thought sent a shiver down her spine. She had been dragged into a world she barely understood — ruthless, controlled by power and blood. Every second spent inside these walls reminded her how fragile her life had become.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Miss Rossi?"

She turned to see a young man in a crisp black suit, his dark eyes alert. He looked ordinary enough at first glance, but there was a precision in his movements, and authority that spoke louder than words.

"Uh… yes?" she replied cautiously.

"My name is Matteo. I manage certain… aspects of the house." He bowed slightly, polite but firm. "Lucian requested I ensure you are comfortable before I brief you on the rules."

Elena frowned. "Rules?"

Matteo smiled faintly. "You live here now. And like every resident of this household, there are some spoken expectations to be met while others are implied."

She sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed, running her slim hand through her hair in annoyance. "Great. I've gone from normal life to… one dictated by rules."

Matteo's eyes flickered. "Lucian is the head of the Moretti family, the mafia itself, and he is very observant, if I may add.. You would do well to understand him quickly because disobedience is… inadvisable."

Elena's pulse quickened. Advisable? That's putting it mildly.

"I assume you're not here just to give me a warning," she said sharply. "What exactly am I supposed to do?"

Matteo glanced toward the door, as if making sure no one else was listening. "First… survive. Second… always be alert, Lucian expects sharpness and awareness. Awareness of your surroundings, of the people around you, and of the dangers that… often comes uninvited."

Elena's stomach tightened. "Dangers?"

"The world outside these walls is not kind to witnesses." Matteo's voice was calm, but each word reminds her of what she had gotten her self into "You are important to Lucian. And that makes you… vulnerable."

Elena swallowed, trying to steady her trembling hands. "So I'm trapped here. I'm in constant danger. And I have to obey a man I barely know."

Matteo's expression softened slightly. "It sounds worse when you say it like that. But… he does protect those under his roof."

Elena gave a bitter laugh. "That's comforting."

Before Matteo could answer, The door opened and a woman stepped. Tall, Elegant, with a air of authority.

Her sharp green eyes swept across Elena like a hawk looking at its target. Her hair was perfectly styled, her posture, full of confidence.

"Matteo, I assume she's settled for the morning?" the woman asked, her voice smooth but commanding.

"Yes, Sofia." Matteo turned to Elena. "This is Sofia Moretti, Lucian's younger sister. She oversees the family business affairs and… ensures everyone knows their place."

Elena swallowed nervously. "Hello."

Sofia's gaze assessed her silently, "So, this is the girl who survived the alley last night," she said finally, a faint, knowing smile playing at her lips. "Interesting."

"Interesting?" Elena repeated, confused.

"Lucian don't bring witnesses home, because if there is ever a witness, he kills them" Sofia replied lightly, tilting her head. "so this is a first. Don't misunderstand, you're safe as long as you're here."

Elena felt the weight of her eyes on her. It wasn't hostility exactly, but it wasn't warmth either. Sofia was the kind of person who noticed every detail, assessing every word, and held judgment in reserve until necessary.

"Good morning," Elena said finally, trying to assert herself.

"Good morning, Miss Rossi," Sofia replied, voice neutral. "You will find life here….comfortable as long as you follow the rules."

Elena nodded slowly. "Right. Rules. Got it."

Sofia's lips curved into a faint smile. "this is our life miss rossi. Every person in this house has a role, and every role carries responsibility. Understand that, and you will you'll be just fine."

Elena shivered slightly. I'm already in over my head.

Sofia's attention shifted slightly toward Matteo. "He will brief her further. Lucian will see you soon. Bye now Miss Rossi."

"Yes, Sofia," Elena said.

Sofia left, her heels clicking elegantly against the marble floors.

Elena exhaled, feeling the tension ease slightly, only slightly.

Matteo approached, holding a folder of documents. "We begin with a tour," he said calmly. "You will see the house, understand its layout, and meet a few people who are… important to Lucian and part of the family."

Elena groaned inwardly. "Important or dangerous?"

Matteo's lips twitched in amusement. "Both."

The hallway was long, lined with priceless artwork and artifacts Elena couldn't begin to name. She walked beside Matteo, feeling every glance from servants moving silently in the background probably wondering who their boss had brought home.

They reached the grand staircase where Lucian had disappeared the previous night. Matteo stopped. "This is where many decisions are made. Many alliances formed. And sometimes… many lives changed."

Elena's stomach twisted. "You mean… like mine?"

Matteo looked at her steadily. "Exactly like yours. And if you hope to survive here, you will need to learn quickly, choose your moments carefully."

Elena's hands clenched into fists at her sides. She had no illusions now. This wasn't a temporary stay. It wasn't protection for a day or a week. She had entered a world ruled by mafias, where danger and power coexisted, and even the smallest mistakes could cost her life.

Her eyes wandered toward the top of the staircase. Somewhere up there, Lucian is probably watching her or maybe thinking of what to make of me.

"And I can't run."

"No.

The deep voice came from behind her.

Elena froze. Slowly… she turned.

Lucian Moretti stood a few steps away, one hand tucked into his pocket, his dark eyes fixed on her like a predator studying its prey.

"You can't run."
