Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Dragon Lord

Chapter 23: The Dragon Lord

Recap: Fang Yuan's Moonlight Gu evolved into a Rank 4 Light/Dragon creature. Now, on the morning of the final Gym battle, he stands before the imperial palace, facing the Dragon Lord—a Rank 6 Dragon specialist and the eighth Gym Leader.

---

Dawn broke over the capital like a blade.

Fang Yuan stood at the entrance to the palace courtyard, his grey robes clean, his face empty, his hands still. Around him, the crowd had gathered—thousands of them, from every corner of the Gu world. Nobles in silk robes, merchants in fine coats, Gu Masters in battle armor, and commoners in simple cloth. All of them had come to watch.

The courtyard was vast, paved with white stone, surrounded by marble columns. At its center, a platform rose—circular, wide enough for a dragon to fly, strong enough to withstand a Rank 6's attacks. This was the Dragon Lord's arena.

And at the arena's center, waiting, was Long Wei.

He was tall, his hair white, his eyes gold, his robes the color of flame. He held no weapon, carried no visible Gu, but the air around him shimmered with heat, and the ground beneath his feet was cracked from the pressure of his presence.

Beside him, three Gu hovered. A Dragon King, Rank 5, its scales gold, its eyes red, its wings wide enough to block the sun. A Storm Dragon, Rank 4, its body blue, its wings crackling with lightning. A Flame Dragon, Rank 4, its body red, its breath a cloud of ash and fire.

Three dragons. Rank 5, Rank 4, Rank 4. Against my eight Subjects. This will be the hardest fight of my life.

Long Wei's eyes fixed on Fang Yuan. "You came."

"I said I would."

"You also said you wanted the eighth badge. The key to the door." The Dragon Lord smiled. "I've been waiting for you, Fang Yuan. Waiting for the demon who carries the fragments. Waiting for the one who would dare to open what should remain closed."

Fang Yuan stepped onto the platform. "Then stop waiting. Fight me."

The Dragon Lord laughed—a deep, rumbling sound that shook the columns. "Very well."

He raised his hand. The match began.

---

The Flame Dragon struck first.

Fire erupted from its mouth, a torrent of flame that swept across the platform. Fang Yuan released his Frost Serpent Gu.

"Ice Beam!"

The beam of ice met the flame, and steam exploded between them, filling the courtyard with mist. The crowd gasped, pressing back. Fang Yuan couldn't see. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't think.

He released his Storm Phoenix Gu. "Gust!"

The wind swept across the platform, clearing the mist, scattering the steam. The Flame Dragon was still there, its flames building for another attack. The Frost Serpent Gu was panting, its frost melting.

"Again," Fang Yuan said. "Ice Beam!"

The Frost Serpent Gu opened its mouth, but before the ice could form, the Storm Dragon struck. Lightning arced from its wings, striking the Frost Serpent's body. The creature screamed, its scales cracking, its frost evaporating.

Fang Yuan recalled it. Two Subjects down. The Flame Dragon and Storm Dragon are too fast. I need to slow them down.

He released his Magma Tortoise Gu.

The creature materialized, its shell glowing, its eyes burning. The Flame Dragon turned, its flames building, but the Magma Tortoise was faster. It spat a stream of molten rock, striking the Flame Dragon's wings.

The dragon screamed, its wings burning, its flames faltering. It crashed onto the platform, its body writhing.

But the Dragon King was already moving.

It was massive—its wings wide, its claws sharp, its teeth gleaming. It lunged at the Magma Tortoise, its jaws open, and Fang Yuan recalled the tortoise a second before the Dragon King's teeth closed on empty air.

Three Subjects down. The Dragon King is Rank 5. My Subjects are Rank 3 and 4. I can't match it in direct combat.

He released his Solar Dragon Gu.

The creature materialized in a burst of golden light, its tendrils waving, its flowers blooming. Grass/Dragon. Rank 3. Against a Rank 5 Dragon King, it was nothing.

But it had something the Dragon King didn't.

"Solar Beam," Fang Yuan said.

The Solar Dragon Gu's flowers glowed, absorbing the morning sunlight. A beam of golden light shot toward the Dragon King's chest, striking its scales, burning them, melting them.

The Dragon King roared, its body convulsing, and for a moment, it staggered.

The Storm Dragon lunged. Lightning arced from its wings, striking the Solar Dragon Gu's body. The creature screamed, its flowers wilting, its light dimming.

Fang Yuan recalled it. Four Subjects down. I need a new strategy.

He reached into his pocket and touched the cracked stone.

Not yet, the creature whispered. He is waiting for you to fuse. He wants to see what you become.

Fang Yuan's hand tightened. "Then I'll give him what he wants."

He released his Stone Dragon Gu.

The dragon materialized, its scales grey, its eyes gold. It was smaller than the Dragon King, weaker, but it was a dragon. And dragons fear only dragons.

"Dragon Breath!"

Golden fire erupted from the Stone Dragon's mouth, striking the Dragon King's chest. The creature recoiled, its scales smoking, its wings folding.

The Flame Dragon, its wings still burning, tried to rise. Fang Yuan released his Wildfire Stallion.

"Flame Charge!"

The Stallion charged, its body becoming a streak of fire. It struck the Flame Dragon's chest, and the dragon screamed, its flames extinguishing, its body falling.

The Storm Dragon turned, its lightning building. Fang Yuan released his Storm Phoenix Gu.

"Storm Call!"

The sky darkened. Clouds gathered, heavy with rain, and lightning flashed. The Storm Dragon's lightning was absorbed by the storm, its attacks neutralized.

The Dragon King roared. It lunged at the Stone Dragon, its claws raking across the dragon's scales. The Stone Dragon stumbled, its body cracking, its blood spilling.

Fang Yuan recalled it. Five Subjects down. The Dragon King is still standing. I have three left.

He released his evolved Moonlight Gu.

The creature materialized in a burst of silver and gold, its body white as snow, its wings gold as the sun, its eyes silver as the moon. Rank 4. Light/Dragon.

The Dragon King paused. Its red eyes fixed on the creature, and for the first time, Fang Yuan saw something in them.

Fear.

"What is that?" Long Wei's voice was sharp. "That's not a Gu. That's not anything I've ever seen."

Fang Yuan smiled. "It's my first capture. My weakest. And now, my strongest."

He raised his hand. "Dragon Breath."

The creature opened its mouth, and a stream of silver fire erupted. It struck the Dragon King's chest, and the dragon screamed, its scales melting, its body convulsing. The silver fire burned through armor, through scales, through flesh.

The Dragon King fell.

The Storm Dragon, its lightning still crackling, lunged. Fang Yuan's creature turned, its silver eyes flashing, and another stream of silver fire struck the Storm Dragon's wings. The dragon screamed, its wings burning, and crashed onto the platform.

The Flame Dragon tried to rise. Fang Yuan's creature looked at it, and the dragon went still. It bowed its head.

Long Wei stood alone on the platform, his three dragons defeated, his face pale.

"You've won," he said quietly.

He reached into his robes and pulled out a badge—gold as the sun, shaped like a dragon, its eyes set with rubies. He held it out.

Fang Yuan took it. The system flared.

[Gym Badge Acquired: Dragon Badge]

[8/8 Badges Obtained]

[All system restrictions lifted]

[Legendary Subject Unlocked: Spring Autumn Cicada]

[Eighth Badge Bonus: 500 Primeval Stones]

His status updated: Primeval Stones: 581.

The world went white.

---

When his vision cleared, he was somewhere else.

A void. Endless, dark, silent. No ground beneath his feet, no sky above his head. Just emptiness.

And before him, floating in the void, was the Spring Autumn Cicada.

It was beautiful—its body jade green, its wings translucent, its eyes gold. It pulsed with power, with time itself, and when Fang Yuan reached out to touch it, the creature stirred.

You have done it, the creature whispered. You have collected all eight badges. The system is broken. The door is open.

Fang Yuan's hand closed around the Spring Autumn Cicada's sphere. "The door. Where is it?"

North. Beyond the mountains. The Dead Lands. The door you saw in your dreams. It is waiting for you.

Fang Yuan tucked the sphere into his pocket. "Then I'll go."

There is something you should know. The door is not just a door. It is a seal. And what lies beyond it...

The creature's voice faded.

What lies beyond it is the end of everything.

Fang Yuan smiled. "Then I'll end it."

The void shattered.

---

He woke on the platform, the crowd cheering, the Dragon Lord watching.

"You have what you came for," Long Wei said. "The badges. The key. The door." He stepped closer, his voice dropping. "But I warn you, Fang Yuan. What lies beyond that door is not meant for mortal eyes. Not even for demon eyes."

Fang Yuan met his gaze. "I've seen worse."

He turned and walked off the platform, through the crowd, through the gates, through the city. He did not look back.

---

He walked until the capital was a smudge on the horizon, until the sun set, until the stars came out.

Then he stopped and opened his Status screen.
