Chapter 41 - The First Strike

War only becomes real—

When someone makes the first move.

Daniel Hayes had just made his.

The city was quiet.

But underneath—

Something was shifting.

Hayes Corporation.

For the first time in days—

Daniel was back.

But this wasn't about rebuilding.

This wasn't about damage control.

This was preparation.

"Lock down all external systems," he ordered.

Laura hesitated.

"That will isolate us," she said.

Daniel didn't look at her.

"That's the point."

Silence.

Because now—

He wasn't playing defense.

He was drawing a line.

"Redirect all remaining assets," he continued.

"Cut every unnecessary connection."

Laura's voice dropped.

"You're shrinking the company."

Daniel finally turned.

"No," he said.

A pause.

"I'm hardening it."

Across the city—

Carter Holdings.

Emily Carter stood in the main control room.

The chaos had slowed.

*** If you were in Emily's place… would you destroy everything again? ***

But the damage—

Was still there.

"Status," she said.

Robert stepped forward.

"We've stabilized most systems," he said.

A pause.

"But we're still exposed."

Emily nodded.

Then—

Made a decision.

"Open everything."

Silence.

Robert blinked.

"What?" he asked.

Emily's eyes sharpened.

"All internal data," she said.

A pause.

"Make it public."

Shock.

"That will destroy us," Robert said.

Emily shook her head.

"No," she replied.

A pause.

"It removes leverage."

Silence.

Because now—

She wasn't protecting the system.

She was removing its value.

Obsidian Tower.

Alexander Knight watched both moves unfold.

Daniel—

Closing everything.

Emily—

Opening everything.

Opposite strategies.

Same goal.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Because neither of them—

Were predictable anymore.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

Evelyn Cross: "They're adapting."

Alexander smiled slightly.

Typed back.

"So am I."

Elsewhere—

Evelyn Cross stood before her system.

Watching everything.

Daniel's isolation.

Emily's exposure.

Two extremes.

Two reactions.

"Good," she said softly.

Because now—

They were thinking.

But not enough.

Back at Hayes Corporation—

Daniel stood alone.

Looking at the city.

For once—

Not reacting.

Focused.

His phone buzzed.

One message.

Evelyn Cross: "You think cutting yourself off will protect you?"

Daniel didn't hesitate.

He replied:

"No."

A pause.

"It forces you to come to me."

Silence.

Then—

A response.

"You're learning."

Daniel's expression didn't change.

Because this—

Wasn't about proving anything.

This was about control.

Across the city—

Carter Holdings.

Emily watched as her company's data went live.

Every file.

Every deal.

Every secret.

Now—

Public.

"Media reaction is exploding," Robert said.

Emily nodded.

"Good."

Robert looked at her.

"You're giving up everything," he said.

Emily's voice was calm.

"No," she replied.

A pause.

"I'm taking away her weapon."

Silence.

Because now—

There was nothing left to expose.

Obsidian Tower.

Alexander leaned forward slightly.

Now—

Interested.

"They're both removing variables," he said.

A pause.

"Which means…"

His eyes sharpened.

"The next move will be direct."

Elsewhere—

Evelyn Cross watched it all.

Her system—

Still intact.

But shifting.

"You want direct?" she said softly.

A pause.

"Then let's make it direct."

Suddenly—

The screens changed.

New signals.

New activity.

"Target identified," a voice said.

Back at Hayes Corporation—

The lights flickered.

Systems glitched.

Then—

Everything went dark.

Emergency systems activated.

Alarms blared.

"What's happening?" Laura shouted.

Daniel didn't move.

Because he knew.

"She's here," he said.

Across the city—

Carter Holdings.

Same thing.

Systems shutting down.

Lights flickering.

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"No," she said quietly.

Obsidian Tower.

Alexander smiled.

Finally.

Across all three locations—

One message appeared.

"You wanted direct."

A pause.

Then—

"Here I am."

Silence.

Because now—

The game wasn't digital.

It wasn't distant.

It wasn't controlled.

It was real.

And it had just begun.

💬 Who made the smarter move—Daniel or Emily?

And if you were in their place… would you fight Evelyn directly or avoid her?
